Smash and grab incidents continue to be a serious concern for motorists in certain areas. Drivers are urged to stay alert when passing through specific intersections where these crimes are known to occur frequently.
The following locations have been identified as *High Risk* :
1. The intersection of Jakes Gerwel Drive and Jakkalsvlei Avenue is a major hotspot where thieves often target vehicles moving slowly in traffic.
2. At the corner of 35th Street and Bishop Lavis Drive, several recent incidents have been reported, making it a location of concern.
3. The junction of Stellenbosch Arterial Road and Adam Tas Road is known for frequent smash and grab activity, especially during peak traffic hours.
4. The area around M10 and Stellenbosch Arterial Road, near the Belhar graveyard, has seen repeated criminal activity involving vehicle break-ins.
5. At Owen Road and 35th Street in Elsies River, drivers are often targeted by criminals, particularly when they appear distracted.
6. On M12, Jan van Riebeeck Road near Elwood High School, individuals have been seen hiding behind trees, posing a threat to passing motorists.
7. The intersection of Valhalla Drive and Jakkalsvlei Drive in the Kalksteenfontein and Bonteheuwel area is especially risky during peak hours when traffic is slow.
To reduce the risk of becoming a victim, motorists are advised to take the following precautions :
- Keep all valuables such as phones, handbags, and laptops out of sight, preferably in the boot or on the floor of the vehicle.
- Stay vigilant at intersections by watching for people loitering near traffic lights, moving between cars, or approaching vehicles.
- Maintain a safe distance from the car in front to allow room for a quick escape if necessary.
- Keep windows rolled up and doors locked, particularly when approaching or stopping in areas known for these types of crimes.
