πŸŒ₯️ Good morning and happy Friday from a partly cloudy and cold George in the Western Cape πŸŒ¬οΈπŸ•’ 08:10 | 19 June 2026

β–ͺ︎ An onshore flow from a strong high pressure south of SA is expected to bring isolated showers to the southern and eastern parts of South Africa today. Low cloud and mist may accompany these conditions in places.

β–ͺ︎ A quasi-stationary (very slow-moving) to stationary Cut-off Low (COL) over Namibia (see attached satellite image) is expected to produce isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers across central and southern Namibia, western Botswana and northern SA today through Saturday, with a risk of strong to severe thunderstorms in some areas during the said period.

The Cut-off Low is forecast to remain slow-moving over Namibia during the next two days before gradually moving into north-western South Africa on Sunday while weakening. Although no widespread severe weather is currently expected over South Africa during the next five days, localized impacts associated with the COL remain possible, particularly over the far northern parts of the Northern Cape. πŸŒ¦οΈβ›ˆοΈπŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦πŸ‡³πŸ‡¦

πŸ›°οΈ A GIANT COMMA IN THE SKY! β€οΈβ›ˆοΈ

At 08:00 on 19 June 2026, satellite imagery captured an impressive comma-shaped cloud shield stretching from central Namibia across Botswana into South Africa. This classic signature marks the presence of a mature, quasi-stationary Cut-Off Low (COL), a weather system that has become detached from the main westerly flow and is therefore moving very slowly.

The core of the comma, corresponding to the upper-air low-pressure centre, is positioned over Namibia, where cold air aloft and significant atmospheric instability continue to generate showers, thundershowers and lightning. The cloud band wraps cyclonically around the low, with the leading portion extending across south-eastern Angola into western Botswana, while the trailing cloud band curves across southern Namibia into northern South Africa, highlighting the extensive circulation associated with the system. The rippled and textured appearance of the cloud tops is particularly striking, indicating deep convection, vigorous uplift and strong upper-level dynamics.

What makes this system remarkable is its persistence. Instead of being steered away by the jet stream, it remains largely trapped over the region beneath weak steering currents, allowing cloud, rain and thunderstorms to repeatedly develop over the same areas. This is one of the reasons why Cut-Off Lows are among the most fascinating and impactful weather systems affecting southern Africa.

β›ˆοΈ Isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, with a risk of localized severe thunderstorms capable of producing heavy downpours, hail, excessive lightning and damaging wind gusts, can be expected over parts of central and southern Namibia, western Botswana and the northern parts of the Northern Cape today and tomorrow.

πŸ“Nature's weather map has drawn a near-perfect comma across southern Africa β€” and every curve tells the story of a stubborn, slow-moving atmospheric vortex... detached from the main westerly flow... spinning over southern Africa.

πŸŽ‰Good morning and happy Friday!πŸŽ‰
05:44, 19 June 2026.

We forget that waking up is the first miracle of the day. Before the coffee, before the chaos, before the fast scrolling and fast living… there is breath in your lungs and a heartbeat in your chest. That is the real gift.🎁

Today, pause for just a moment. Feel the coolness of the morning. Notice the light shifting across the sky. Let gratitude soften the noise inside you. Life has already given you something precious before you even stepped out of bed.πŸ₯³

Whatever waits for you today, carry this truth gently: you woke up. You got another chance. Another page to write. Another sunrise to witness. Another opportunity to heal, to try again, to love again, to be kinder to yourself.πŸ™πŸ½

May this Friday meet you with peace, strength and quiet gratitude. And may you never forget the simple miracle of opening your eyes to a new day. πŸ’›

πŸ›°οΈ Satellite loop from 08:40 yesterday morning to 08:40 this morning (Thursday, 18 June 2026) shows the slow movement of a cut-off low (COL) over Namibia. The system is completely detached from the mid-latitude westerly flow, resulting in little to no steering influence and causing it to remain quasi-stationary, and at times nearly stationary. The COL is expected to linger over Namibia until at least Sunday, bringing isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, along with a risk of isolated severe thunderstorms across parts of the country. β›ˆοΈπŸ‡³πŸ‡¦

Although no widespread severe weather is currently anticipated over South Africa during the next five days, localized impacts associated with the COL remain possible, particularly over the northern parts of the Northern Cape and North-West. πŸŒ¦οΈβ›ˆοΈπŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦

Isolated showers can be expected over parts of southern and eastern SA today. Stay safe.

πŸŒ₯️ Good morning and happy Thursday from a partly cloudy and cold George in the Western Cape πŸŒ¬οΈπŸ•’ 08:10 | 18 June 2026

β–ͺ︎ An onshore flow from high pressure is expected to bring isolated showers to the far eastern parts of South Africa, including eastern Limpopo, eastern Mpumalanga, and the northern and eastern regions of KwaZulu-Natal, as well as eSwatini, today. On-shore flow will also bring isolated showers to the southern and eastern coastal regions today. Low cloud and mist may accompany these conditions in places.

β–ͺ︎ A quasi-stationary (slow-moving) to stationary Cut-off Low over Namibia (see attached satellite and wind map images) is expected to produce isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers across central and southern Namibia from today through Saturday, with a risk of strong to severe thunderstorms in some areas during the said period. Over South Africa, isolated showers and thundershowers are expected over the north-western interior today.

The Cut-off Low is forecast to remain slow-moving over Namibia during the next three days before gradually moving into north-western South Africa on Sunday while weakening. Although no widespread severe weather is currently expected over South Africa during the next five days, localized impacts associated with isolated thunderstorms remain possible, particularly over parts of northern Northern Cape. πŸŒ¦οΈβ›ˆοΈπŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦πŸ‡³πŸ‡¦
