π°οΈ A GIANT COMMA IN THE SKY! β€οΈβοΈ
At 08:00 on 19 June 2026, satellite imagery captured an impressive comma-shaped cloud shield stretching from central Namibia across Botswana into South Africa. This classic signature marks the presence of a mature, quasi-stationary Cut-Off Low (COL), a weather system that has become detached from the main westerly flow and is therefore moving very slowly.
The core of the comma, corresponding to the upper-air low-pressure centre, is positioned over Namibia, where cold air aloft and significant atmospheric instability continue to generate showers, thundershowers and lightning. The cloud band wraps cyclonically around the low, with the leading portion extending across south-eastern Angola into western Botswana, while the trailing cloud band curves across southern Namibia into northern South Africa, highlighting the extensive circulation associated with the system. The rippled and textured appearance of the cloud tops is particularly striking, indicating deep convection, vigorous uplift and strong upper-level dynamics.
What makes this system remarkable is its persistence. Instead of being steered away by the jet stream, it remains largely trapped over the region beneath weak steering currents, allowing cloud, rain and thunderstorms to repeatedly develop over the same areas. This is one of the reasons why Cut-Off Lows are among the most fascinating and impactful weather systems affecting southern Africa.
βοΈ Isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, with a risk of localized severe thunderstorms capable of producing heavy downpours, hail, excessive lightning and damaging wind gusts, can be expected over parts of central and southern Namibia, western Botswana and the northern parts of the Northern Cape today and tomorrow.
πNature's weather map has drawn a near-perfect comma across southern Africa β and every curve tells the story of a stubborn, slow-moving atmospheric vortex... detached from the main westerly flow... spinning over southern Africa.
