The Chronicles of Refugees and Immigrants, at the just ended five days ILRIG Political School in Cape Town had the opportunity to share with participants it's Building Peaceful Communities in the Western Cape campaign. 17 local activist organisations across South Africa participated. All participants agreed xenophobia is a cancer that must be removed, if the ideals of independence are to be realised. To counter xenophobic narratives, participants emphasised the need to increase pro - immigrant narratives, and mobilise towards social change. The rise of unemployment and precarious work among the most vulnerable members of the society including immigrant women and those living with disabilities was noted as a serious concern. Establishing Communes to counter - unemployment and precarious work was seen as the best alternative. Lines of collaboration and solidarity in current and future campaigns were established.

Great deliberations were made yesterday during the official launch of our building peaceful communities in the Western Cape campaign. The launch is a testament to our commitment to total ownership of the campaign by the communities that are affected by violence. Representatives from the immigrant and local communities from different parts of the Western Cape participated in the discussions on strategies to promote peaceful coexistence between locals and immigrants, and recommendations were made. The campaign is a learning phase where we tap from indigenous knowledge of resolving conflict and maintaining peace. The divide and rule of some farmers, and some politicians were identified as the major spark of xenophobic violence. Immigrants are encouraged to be part of local structures, and to participate in local development initiatives such as unions, service delivery protests, and social gatherings such as funerals and weddings. Concerns were raised on limited participation by some immigrants in these programs which expose them to great risk of extortion, crime, and outright xenophobia. Furthermore, South Africa's history of apartheid has been identified as a contributory factor to the culture of hate and othering. It was recommended that an education programme that educate South Africans on this history and an understanding of the African history, socio, economic and political affairs in the face of global imperialism can help to curb violence. Participants committed to work towards the integration of immigrants in the South African community.
