We had a successful meeting with representatives of the Zimbabwean community in Nkqubela, a township in Robertson, 137 kilometers east of Cape Town. Since the outbreak of conflict between Basotho and Zimbabweans in 2022 over unequal job opportunities caused by farmers favouring one group over the other, various members of this community came together to stop the conflict. However, there is still tension, and resentment among members of the two groups. There are fears that few anti - immigrant groups may use the tension to trigger violence. We will continue with our meetings with representatives of different communities to understand the root cause of conflict and establish avenues for lasting peace.

We have started our campaign centred on building peaceful communities in the Western Cape Province. The campaign has started with pre - launch deliberations with immigrant and local community leaders in Robertson and Mbekweni. This is in preparation for the launch and commissioning of our campaign on the 19th of July 2025 at Salt River Community Hall in Cape Town. The launch and commissioning is a demonstration that the campaign is owned and driven by local communities and immigrants. As the Chronicles of Refugees and Immigrants (ChRI), we believe that communities have power to solve their own problems.

The Chronicles of Refugees and Immigrants is glad to be working with e - riders in a Fair Labor Practice Campaign. Thanks to York University students who published a report following a research on e - riders working conditions in December last year. Their findings exposed unfair labor practice, exploitation and casualisation of labor typical in a gig economy. We have started a campaign supported by ILRIG and Scalabrini Centre of Cape Town, to raise awareness on labour rights of e - riders. Our workshop yesterday was to conscientise e- riders on avenues available to exercise their rights, facilitate sharing of ideas and experience and advice on documentation. The majority of e-riders in Cape Town are immigrants. Thanks to ILRIG and Scalabrini for facilitating the live discussions.

The history of mankind is a history of migration. Migration is human nature. Some of the major cities in the world, including Johannesburg in South Africa were built by migrant labor. Let us celebrate the contribution of immigrants to the development of the host community.

Congolese in Cape Town, marched to parliament demanding an end to atrocities in Eastern DRC. They condemn Rwanda for backing the M23 militia. They demand a cancellation of mineral trade deals between the European Union (EU) and Rwanda which they say only help to fuel conflict and bloodshed The Chronicles of Refugees and Immigrants work with and support peaceful initiatives that support peace and development in the host community and countries of origin by immigrant communities.

The Chronicles of Refugees and Immigrants joined other progressive forces in Cape Town to demand justice for victims of Stilfontein massacre. The protest was held outside the Mining Indaba at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. 87 miners, mostly immigrants from Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Lesotho, perished in Stilfontein mine, following government crackdown on informal mining activities in December last year.

In a circular, the Department of Basic Education has issued a directive that schools must accept all learners for enrolment in 2025, including those without documentation. This is in line with the recently implemented Basic Education Laws Amendment Act, a great step towards ensuring basic education for all. We notice that procedures that emphasised on documentation had for years disadvantaged both local and immigrant poor learners, leading to the infringement of their fundamental human rights to education and opportunities in life.

We maintain that the Stilfontein massacre could have been avoided had state departments acted in accordance with the provisions of the constitution which guarantees safety for all, without discrimination. We call upon SAPS and other departments to act according to the provisions of the law and to comply with court orders which compels them to allow food, water and medication into the mine and at the same time allow processes for the launch of a rescue operation. Closing exit points and denying the miners food, water and medicine is a serious crime against humanity. We thank the local community for standing with enclosed miners at a time when it was unfashionable to do so.
