Mist, Memory, and a Rising Tide — Rediscovering Glentana’s Ghostly Shores
The sea has a way of keeping secrets—and sometimes, it whispers them back to you in the mist.
In April 2025, we returned to the hauntingly beautiful Glentana Shipwreck Trail, a coastal hike we once tread before. This time, though, the ocean wore a different face—one shrouded in dense fog, the kind that mutes sound and magnifies every footstep on the sand. We were there to show Maryke’s parents, Andre and Erna, the old shipwreck that has long rested like a rusted sentinel on the tide-smoothed shore. A memory we wanted to share—and relive.
But time and tide wait for no one.
Last year’s storm had rewritten the beach’s topography. Familiar paths had vanished beneath rearranged sandbanks and eroded dunes. As we wandered among jagged rocks, tide pools, and the skeletal remains of the wreck, we were struck by how different it all felt. The rusted ribs of the ship stood out like ghostly sculptures, framed by churning waves and blanketed skies.
What started as a calm exploration became unexpectedly tense when the tide began its silent, rapid rise. Our return route along the beach disappeared beneath the waves, forcing us to scramble over slippery boulders and navigate narrow coastal ledges just to find our way back. It was humbling—and a touch exhilarating. Luckily, our daughter had stayed home, warm and safe with her nanny, as the fog rolled in thick and cold.
That day, the sea reminded us that even known places can become wild again. That beauty isn’t just found in what we plan, but in how we adapt when the plan changes. And that adventure, real adventure, often lies just beyond the comfort zone—wrapped in mist and echoing with the sound of crashing waves.
So here’s to those unexpected turns, the places that change, and the stories that deepen every time we return.
