A car thief was caught only minutes after stealing a vehicle from a school in Hartbeespoort on Monday, after a K9 member of a security company tracked him down to his hiding place.

Kebra, a K9 member of the Afrique du Sud K9 Security team, found the suspect hiding in bushes near the crime scene, resulting in his arrest.

The suspect stole a bakkie from Generaal Hendrik Schoeman Primary School in Schoemansville around 16:30 on Monday afternoon. Members of the community saw the theft and pursued the thief.

A newly renovated house in Hartbeespoort was extensively damaged in a blazing house fire on Thursday.

The fire broke out on the upper level of the house in Karel Street in Schoemansville around 11:00, and rapidly spread to the rest of the house.

Police are investigating murder and have opened an inquest after a man (57) and his wife (52) were found dead with gunshot wounds to their heads at their home in Melodie in Hartbeespoort on Friday.

According to police spokesperson, Constable Thuto Bobelo, police were alerted to a shooting incident in the early hours of Friday, 11 September, and responded to the scene on a smallholding.

“Police discovered the bodies of the man and his wife on their bed. Both had sustained gunshot wounds to their heads.”

An elderly couple fought for their lives with anything they could get hold of during a farm attack in De Wildt on Friday night.

Maryna (69) and Paul (67) Scholtz fought back with a cricket bat and walking stick until the robbers managed to take the bat and walking stick from them. “And then I grabbed a broken bedpost and continued to hit at them,” said Maryna.

The couple was attacked on a farm on Zilkaatsnek around 23:00. “Paul was already asleep and I was busy on my phone in bed when I heard the electric fence make a strange sound. I peeped out the window and spotted someone lurking in the shadow of a tree outside the fence,” she said.

The Madibeng Municipality has terminated all water-tanker contracts and will in future utilise its own water tanker trucks to deliver water where necessary.

According to Madibeng spokesperson Tumelo Tshabalala, the water-tanker contracts were terminated to reduce expenditure and allow the municipality to focus instead on developing sustainable, permanent water infrastructure in communities affected by water shortages.

“The municipality needs to reduce expenditure on avoidable line items in the budget, given the municipality’s financial constraints. The end goal is to save on water tankering and simultaneously provide sustainable infrastructure for water supply in communities,” he said.

Police, farmers and Correctional Services this week worked together to catch a dangerous escapee in Brits only three days after he had escaped.

Edward Kgomotso Madiba (38), who was serving a 20-year sentence for robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of a firearm and ammunition, kidnapping, and parole violation, escaped from the Rooigrond Maximum Correctional Centre near Mahikeng on Sunday, 6 September.
