Fifty editions and counting!

Welcome to the 50th edition of ForSawn Media's WoodBiz Africa / SA Forestry digital magazine - a milestone we're proud to celebrate with you.

The Covid pandemic fundamentally changed the landscape for Mickey Petersen and me. As income dried up in 2020, we knew January 2021 demanded decisive action. Taking stock of our situation, we recognised that our combined 70-plus years of experience in the forestry and forest products sector had equipped us with three core strengths: sector network and knowledge, advertising sales and journalism.

In early February 2021, we sat down with our friend Bronwyn Hayes of Fevertree Media to explore possibilities. From those brainstorming sessions, WoodBiz Africa was born as a digital monthly magazine. Our first edition launched at the end of the month, and we've maintained momentum ever since.

This journey would have been impossible without our community of supporters. Our advertisers believed in our vision from the start. Fevertree Media provided an essential partnership. Contributors like David Marks, Chris Chapman, and Justin Nyakudanga consistently delivered quality content. Craig Patterson and Jay Cupido. brought our digital vision to life with their design expertise. Last year, we brought SA Forestry Online on board. And you, our subscribers, have remained engaged and loyal throughout.

Reaching 50 editions represents more than just persistence—it reflects the strength of our industry and the value of staying connected through quality information and insights.

Thank you for being part of this milestone. Here's to the next 50!

The Competition Commission has approved without conditions the sale of Sappi Southern Africa’s Lomati Sawmill to Normandien Farms and handover is planned for 1 September, 2025.

In terms of the agreement, Sappi will transfer Lomati and its assets as a going concern, ensuring all current Lomati employees benefit from continued employment.

In a press release, Sappi described Lomati as a legacy business in the Sappi portfolio. It produces SABS-approved, kiln-dried pine lumber from sawlogs, with a production capacity of 86,000 m³ per annum. The mill primarily serves the building, furniture, and packaging industries.

Since its opening in 1971, Lomati has undergone several expansions, including significant upgrades to its wetmill, kilns, and finger-joint plant.

Students participating in South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP) accredited architecture programmes, or the international equivalent, are invited to enter the 2025 Timber Design Competition.

The theme for this year's competition is Expanding Timber's Design Potential. Participants can choose and define their own construction site and programme to highlight the transformative potential of engineered timber as a building technology.

The competition is an initiative of the York Timber Research Chair at the University of Pretoria and is sponsored by York Timbers.

Individuals or groups of three can submit entries ranging from self-initiated conceptual designs to academic coursework. It must exploit engineered timber's distinctive attributes and capacity to address the challenges of climate change and the rapidly evolving built environment.

Submission Deadline: 31 August 2025

As cosy nights and warm drinks become the norm this South African winter, we face a critical, less welcome seasonal threat: wildfires. Dry air, dormant vegetation, and fierce winds turn harmless debris into explosive fuel, making proactive fire management vital. For swift, efficient firebreak creation and clearing, the STIHL BR 700 and BR 800 petrol backpack blowers aren't merely tools; they offer a critical lifeline in fire prevention.
