Sometimes it’s not two people fighting.
Sometimes it’s two wounds having a conversation.
A comment touches an insecurity that was already there. A misunderstanding brings back an old fear. Something small suddenly feels much bigger because it reminds you of something that happened long before this relationship.
And now you’re not just reacting to each other.
You’re reacting to old pain. Old fears. Old stories. Things the other person never caused, but somehow managed to touch.
That doesn’t mean you get to hurt someone and blame your past. We’re still responsible for how we behave.
But maybe the next time you feel yourself getting defensive, angry, or distant, ask yourself:
**“Am I reacting to what’s happening right now… or to something this is reminding me of?”**
Because sometimes the question isn’t,“Who’s right?”
Sometimes it’s:
“What is this bringing up in me?”
The strongest relationships aren’t made up of two people who never get triggered.
They’re built by two people who are willing to stop, look at their own wounds, and say:
“This pain is mine to deal with. But I don’t want it to destroy what we’re building.”
