I finally decided to go public with my new boyfriend. First official outing, my distant cousin’s funeral. Everything went well during the service. He held my hand, looked respectful, even helped with the chairs. He greeted my family members humbly. I was proud. Then came the food queue at the deceased’s home. By the time we reached the front, the meat was finished. Only pap and cabbage left. My boyfriend lost his mind. He started shouting that the family had no respect, that they were starving visitors on purpose, and that this was poor hospitality. People turned and stared. Gogos shook their heads. I wanted the ground to open and swallow me together with the empty meat pots. He grabbed my arm and announced we were leaving. As soon as he dropped me I blocked him. I still don't understand why he made a fuss because it was just food. It's not like we didn't have money to buy food. Why is funeral food so important?"
