Before You Buy New Hiking Boots, Read This...

One of the most common questions I get asked is, "What hiking shoe should I buy?" The truth is that the best shoe in the world won't solve every problem on the trail. Sometimes the issue isn't the shoe at all. It can be your lacing technique, the socks you're wearing, the terrain you're hiking on, or simply not understanding how your feet react after hours on the trail.

I've learned this the hard way. I've dealt with blisters, black toenails, loose toenails, hotspots, and even taken my socks off after a long hike to find blood from a blister that had finally given up. Every painful lesson taught me that foot care is one of the most important hiking skills you can learn. Your feet carry you through every summit, every rocky climb, every river crossing, and every kilometre of adventure.

What many hikers don't realise is that your feet can swell throughout the day, especially during long hikes and in warmer conditions. Add steep descents and your feet start sliding forward inside your shoes, putting pressure on your toes and creating the perfect recipe for blisters and bruised toenails. Even your choice of socks plays a bigger role than most people think. A good hiking sock helps manage moisture, reduces friction, cushions pressure points, and can often make the difference between finishing a hike comfortably or suffering through the last few kilometres.

๐Ÿ’ก Trail Tip: Most hikers test their boots on flat ground, but foot problems usually show up on the downhills. Before your next big adventure, find a steep slope and pay attention to what your feet are doing. If your heel lifts, your toes slide forward, or you start feeling hotspots, don't rush out and buy new boots. First look at your lacing technique and sock choice, you might be surprised how much of a difference they can make.

Your boots get all the attention, but your feet do all the work.

What has been your biggest foot-care lesson on the trail?

๐Ÿ‘‡ Share your experience below and help another hiker avoid learning it the hard way.

"Years from now, we probably won't remember the distance... but we'll remember the people."

This past weekend we explored Castle Gorge from Maretlwane Wilderness School, one of those hikes that reminds you that some of the best adventures are right on our doorstep. The waterfalls were flowing, the weather was perfect for hiking, and while it might have been a little too chilly for a proper swim, nobody seemed to mind.

Trail Stats
โ€ข Trail: Castle Gorge
โ€ข Start: Maretlwane Wilderness School
โ€ข Distance: 14km return
โ€ข Elevation Gain: ยฑ400m
โ€ข Difficulty: Moderate

Looking through these photos, what stands out most isn't the waterfalls or the scenery. It's the friendships. The conversations while climbing. The snack breaks that somehow turn into 20-minute catch-ups. The laughter echoing through the gorge. The support when someone needs a hand over a rocky section. Those little moments are what make a hike memorable.

As a aspiring Photographer, there's something special about walking a few steps behind and watching it all happen.

Seeing friendships that have been built over years on the trail, and watching new friendships form before your eyes. It's a reminder that hiking is about so much more than reaching a destination.

The waterfalls will always be there. The mountains will always be there. But the people you share those moments with are what turn a hike into a memory worth keeping.

31 days. One Moon. Endless change.

31 days ago, I stood beneath the same sky and photographed the Moon. Tonight, I found myself doing it again. The difference?

Everything had changed... and yet, it was still the same Moon.
On 31 May, we witnessed what is known as a Blue Moon.

Contrary to its name, it isn't actually blue. It's a rare occurrence that happens when an extra full moon appears within a season or calendar cycle. A reminder that even in the predictable rhythm of our solar system, there are moments that stand apart and capture our attention.

What made tonight even more remarkable was the way it rose above the horizon โ€” glowing in deep shades of orange and gold. That fiery colour wasn't the Moon changing, but our perspective. As its light travelled through more of Earth's atmosphere, the shorter blue wavelengths scattered away, leaving behind the warm colours that stopped us in our tracks.
And perhaps that's the lesson.

The Moon never changed colour. The Moon never became something different. What changed was the way we saw it.
Life can be much the same.

Over the course of 31 days, circumstances change. Seasons shift. Challenges come and go. We grow, learn, stumble, rise again, and sometimes find ourselves looking at the same destination through a completely different lens. What once seemed distant becomes attainable. What once seemed ordinary becomes extraordinary.

Our solar system is a masterpiece of movement and timing. Planets orbit, moons cycle through phases, tides rise and fall, and every celestial body plays its part in a story billions of years in the making. The Blue Moon is a reminder that even within patterns, there is room for something rare. Something memorable. Something worth looking up for.

Tonight's orange Moon wasn't just a photograph. It was a reminder that change is constant, perspective is powerful, and beauty often appears when we take the time to look up.

Did you witness the rise of the Blue Moon?

Every experienced hiker started with a single step

Every experienced hiker was once a beginner.

Every confident backpacker once stood at the trailhead wondering if they had packed the right gear, brought enough food, or were capable of taking on the challenge ahead.
This weekend, I watched a group of hikers invest in themselves. They showed up willing to learn, ask questions, share experiences, and take another step forward on their hiking journey.

And that's what it's all about.
It doesn't matter where you start. It doesn't matter how much gear you own. It doesn't matter how many mistakes you've made.

What matters is taking that first step.

Take the knowledge you've gained. Build on it. Trust yourself. Spread your wings and keep moving forward.

Because every hike, every lesson, and every challenge helps shape the hiker you're becoming.

Thank you to everyone who joined The Blueprint of Hiking. Seeing your enthusiasm, questions, and willingness to learn made the day incredibly rewarding.

The future of hiking is bright when people are willing to learn, grow, and share their passion for the outdoors.
Keep exploring. Keep learning. Keep hiking.

The mountains are callingโ€ฆ and the next adventures are here!

From June to October 2026, we have an incredible lineup of day hikes, overnight hikes, and multi-day adventures planned, including some unforgettable Drakensberg wilderness hikes during the heart of winter.

These hikes are all about challenging yourself, building confidence, making new friends, and experiencing some of South Africa's most spectacular mountain scenery.

That said, the Berg in winter demands respect. Snow, frost, strong winds, and sub-zero temperatures are all possible, so proper gear is essential.

For all winter Drakensberg hikes, the minimum recommended gear includes:
๐Ÿฅถ Sleeping bag with a comfort rating of -4ยฐC or lower
๐Ÿ›๏ธ Sleeping pad with an R-value of 4 or higher

I can share a little secret that we are doing Magoebaskloof in Decemberโ€ฆ

These hikes are recreational, non-commercial social hikes where friends and like-minded hikers meet up to explore the outdoors together. They are not professional guided tours or guiding services.

Limited gear hire may be available for selected hikes, full catering can also be done and porter services can be arranged where possible.

Itโ€™s wild how the same trail can mean something completely different to every person walking it...

Some hike to escape the noise.
Some hike to heal.
Some are carrying stress, heartbreak, pressure, grief, burnoutโ€ฆ while others are chasing peace, purpose, adventure, or simply a moment to breathe again.

And somewhere between the climbs, the aching legs, the silence, the laughter, and the endless viewsโ€ฆ something shifts.

The mountains have a way of changing your perspective. Problems that felt heavy become quieter. Thoughts become clearer. For a little while, the outside world slows down, and you remember what it feels like to just exist.

Out there, nobody cares about status, deadlines, or expectations. Itโ€™s just you, the trail, and the present moment.

Thatโ€™s why hiking becomes more than exercise.
More than scenery.
More than reaching a summit.

For many of us, it becomes therapy. Freedom. A reset button. A reminder that weโ€™re stronger than we think.

So tell meโ€ฆ whatโ€™s your reason for hiking?
