MCP’S GOSPEL KAZAKO CAUGHT SYPHONING PUBLIC MONEY, MK 500,000 000 FOR VIDEO DOCUMENTARY
By Our Reporter
Former Minister of Information and a member of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Gospel Kazako has been exposed for stealing public money using his personal company, CG Communications, we can reveal.
Kazako, has been caught pants down to have been syphoning taxpayers money using his company in the last 5-years his party, the MCP were in power.
Among many other scandals we have uncovered, Kazako is caught using his political muscle to steal poor people’s money and abuse his powers at the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), ESCOM and the then Ministry of Water and Sanitation among many others.
According to available information at the Registrar of Companies, CG Communications is a registered media company established and owned by Gospel Kazako. The media organization was put in government records in 1999.
According to available information gathered in our investigations, CG Communications bank signatories are Gospel Kazako, his brother Grey Kazako and his long time business associate and friend, Oscar Kaufa.
CG Communications is the mother company from where Tiakalulu Media Productions was established from where subsequently Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) was born in 2005.
Ministry of Water and Sanitation theft
In one of the uncovered scandals, Gospel Kazako together with his theft associates including Joab Frank Chakhaza, Gabriel Kamlomo and Luke Tembo pocketed almost half a billion kwacha to produce former President Lazarus Chakwera’s video documentary under the then Ministry of Water and Sanitation.
In a Ministerial Memo addressed to Chief Executive Officers for all five water boards in the country, former Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Water and Sanitation Elias Chimulambe bulldozed the struggling entities to pay Gospel Kazako’s CG Communications Mk 145, 658, 043 as advance payment.
In the document, PS Chimulambe directed the Blantyre Water Board, the Southern Region Water Board, the Lilongwe Water Board, the Central Region Water Board, the Northern Region Water Board and the National Water Resources Authority to pay Kazako Mk 24, 276, 340.50 each as their contribution towards a 30 percent upfront payment that was demanded by the former Information Minister. Gospel Kazako charged Mk 485, 658,043 for a single video documentary.
Interestingly, as the Ministry of Water and Sanitation were awarding Kazako this half a billion business, the line Minister was Abida Mia. Apart from belonging to the MCP, both Kazako and Mia come from the Lower Shire districts of Nsanje and Chikwawa respectively.
According to a signed agreement between Kazako’s company and the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, CG Communications were to produce a video documentary showcasing various projects by water boards under the Lazarus Chakwera administration ensuring that every Malawian has clean and portable water.
The agreement was signed on 30th May, 2025 with PS Elias Chimulambe and director Adrian Mpinganjira representing the Ministry whilst on the other hand, Joab Frank Chakhaza and Gabriel Kamlomo represented Kazako’s CG Communications. Both Chakhaza and Kamlomo are names associated with Kazako’s ZBS.
Just like Kazako who is a member of the opposition MCP, Joab Frank Chakhaza from Dowa and Gabriel Kamlomo fron Ntchisi are also members of the former ruling party. Previously, Kamlomo has contested as a Member of Parliament candidate under MCP but failed.
Ministry of Information Covid scandal
In another revelation at the pick of COVID-19, in 2020, Gospel Kazako in his capacity as Minister of Infomation ordered cancellation of award of business to private media houses including Times Group and others unless his own, ZBS was included. Later, on Kazako’s instructions, the multimillion business of producing Covid-19 jingles was handed over to ZBS on a silver platter. MACRA provided funding to the project and Gospel Kazako never declared any conflict of interest as a line Minister.
Kazako’s looting at MEC
As Gospel Kazako’s financial impropriety continue to rise, details have come to light where his ZBS also syphoned millions of public and donor money at MEC during the recently concluded General Elections.
Kazako’s ZBS were the most expensive media house that worked with MEC during the polls where figures are showing that the electoral management body were deliberately overcharged for theft purposes.
For example, a month before the elections on 14th August, 2025, Kazako’s ZBS got a Purchase Order 014687 Reference 01261 where MEC were to pay the media organization a total of Mk 227, 158, 860 for activities related to broadcasting the elections.
At MEC, Kazako using his ZBS is reported to have used fellow MCP members in Chief Elections Officer Andrew Mpesi and Procurement Director Rex Kuyeri colluding to steal the public and donor resources through radio and television broadcasts. Kuyeri is another strong MCP supporter whose other brother, another MCP fanatic is holding a senior influential position at the Blantyre City Assembly.
Gospel Kazako was appointed Minister of Infomation in 2020 by former President Lazarus Chakwera but only lasted in the post for two years after Chakwera heard a loud cry from the citizenry where Kazako was accused of using demeaning and insulting language to Malawians in most of his broadcast interviews as government spokesperson.
Kazako wings at ESCOM
In January, 2025, former President Lazarus Chakwera appointed Kazako as the Chairperson for the Escom Board of Directors. Soon after his appointment at Escom, Kazako bulldozed another of his ZBS former employees Pilirani Phiri to be Chief Public Relations and Communications Officer.
Meanwhile, political analysts and social commentators have called upon relevant government agencies including the Anti Corruption Bureau to probe former Minister Gospel Kazako on these matters.
