🎬 FILM 16 — PRISONERS

“What happens to morality when the people we love are taken away from us?”

Prisoners is an uncomfortable film because it refuses to give us easy answers. At its centre is an impossible moral question: how far should someone go when the system fails to provide justice?
That question becomes increasingly disturbing as the story progresses. What makes the film powerful is that it doesn't simply ask us to judge its characters.

It asks us to understand them. Fear changes people. Desperation changes people. Grief changes people. And sometimes the desire to protect someone can lead us somewhere we never expected to go.

Denis Villeneuve creates an atmosphere where the environment itself seems to carry the emotional weight of the story. Rain. Darkness. Suburban streets. Cold interiors. The world feels morally grey because the characters inhabit a world where certainty has disappeared. That is what makes Prisoners more than a thriller.

It is an examination of morality under pressure.

🎬 FILM 15 — GONE GIRL

“Every story has a perspective. The real question is who controls it.”

Gone Girl is one of my favourite examples of how cinema can manipulate audience perception. The film constantly makes us reconsider what we believe.

Who is telling the truth? Who is performing? Who is the victim?
Who is the villain? And can those categories even remain separate? What makes the film so effective is the relationship between storytelling and perception.

Fincher understands that audiences don't simply consume stories.
We interpret them. And if a filmmaker controls the information we receive, they can influence those interpretations. That is incredibly powerful. It also makes Gone Girl a fascinating study of media, relationships, identity and public perception.

People don't simply become characters within their own lives.
They become characters in the stories other people tell about them. That idea feels particularly relevant in an age where everyone can construct a public identity.

For filmmakers, the lesson is clear: Narrative isn't just about what happened. It is about who gets to tell us what happened.

🎬 FILM 14 — ZODIAC

“The most frightening thing about obsession is that it can disguise itself as purpose.”

David Fincher's Zodiac is one of those films that becomes more fascinating the more you think about it. On the surface, it is a story about a search for a killer. But underneath, it is a story about obsession. The investigation slowly consumes the people pursuing it.

The film doesn't rely on conventional thriller mechanics to maintain tension. Instead, Fincher creates a sense of inevitability through detail, pacing and atmosphere.

Everything feels controlled. The camera. The editing. The performances. The environments. Even the smallest details feel deliberate. And that precision creates something incredibly immersive.

As a filmmaker, I admire Fincher's patience. He trusts the audience.

He understands that tension doesn't always require constant action.
Sometimes tension comes from watching someone become increasingly consumed by something they cannot solve. That is what makes Zodiac so unsettling. The mystery isn't simply whether the truth will be discovered.

It's whether discovering the truth is actually worth what it costs.

One of our Favorite shots of from Cogito Ergo Sum. The lighting in this scene worked well in framing the space and setting the scene. Can anyone tell us who the man in the picture is?

🎬 FILM 13 — THE SHAPE OF WATER

“The greatest love stories aren't always about finding someone who is like us. Sometimes they're about understanding someone who isn't.”

Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water is a beautiful example of how fantasy can be used to tell deeply human stories. The film takes something extraordinary and treats it with emotional sincerity. That is difficult to achieve. Fantasy can easily become spectacle.

But del Toro uses fantasy to explore loneliness, prejudice, power, communication and connection. Water itself becomes a visual and thematic language. It represents transformation, freedom and a world beyond the boundaries imposed by society.

What we admire most is the confidence of the film's visual storytelling. The colours, production design, costumes, spaces and creatures all belong to the same emotional universe. Nothing exists simply because it looks interesting. The visual world supports the story.

That is an important lesson for filmmakers. Beauty should have purpose. A beautiful image becomes much more powerful when it also tells us something about a character or the world they inhabit.

The Shape of Water proves that fantasy doesn't have to take us away from humanity. Sometimes fantasy helps us see humanity more clearly.

🎬 FILM 12 — Q***R

“Some of the most powerful films aren't about what happens. They're about what people are unable to say.”

Q***r is a film that invites us into the emotional interior of its characters. What interests me is its exploration of loneliness, desire, identity and human connection. Cinema has a unique ability to externalize internal experiences.

A character doesn't always need to tell us they are lonely. The framing can tell us. The distance between characters can tell us. The architecture surrounding them can tell us. The silence can tell us.
That is one of the reasons I love filmmaking.

A well-designed image can communicate an emotion that would require pages of dialogue to explain. Q***r reminds me that cinema isn't simply the recording of events. It is the construction of emotional experience.

The audience should not merely understand what a character is feeling. Ideally, they should feel something themselves. That distinction is important. Storytelling isn't always about providing answers. Sometimes it is about allowing the audience to inhabit a feeling.
