Hundreds of Burundian nationals were seen gathering with bags and suitcases outside their embassy in Nairobi this week, rushing to secure travel documents as Kenya moves to enforce rules against unlicensed small-scale businesses run by foreigners.

President William Ruto last week directed that foreigners operating informal trade – including street vending and small kiosks – without proper permits must stop by Monday. Many Burundians, who form a noticeable part of Nairobi’s informal economy selling items like coffee and second-hand clothes, reacted with panic.

Some Burundians reported facing threats or hostility from neighbours following the announcement.

Kenyan officials have stressed the move targets illegal trading, not people based on nationality. Government spokesperson Charles Owino said authorities have zero tolerance for harassment or xenophobia and called on undocumented East African Community nationals, especially Burundians, to register at their embassies. Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei visited the embassy, apologised for any mistreatment caused by misunderstanding of the directive, and promised increased security in areas with large immigrant populations.

There are roughly 16,000 Burundian refugees and asylum seekers in Kenya, according to UN figures. The situation has drawn regional attention, with Burundi’s Foreign Minister warning against hate speech.

Goqwana, who is wheelchair-bound, appears in the footage during proceedings linked to the ongoing case at the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court in the Eastern Cape. He faces charges related to the fatal shooting of Tete outside his NU17 home on 21 August 2026. A female passenger travelling with the boxer was also wounded in the attack and survived.

In court papers and related statements, Goqwana has claimed that Tete previously threatened him with a fi***rm after discovering he was in a relationship with the boxer’s estranged wife. He alleges this incident left him paralysed. These claims form part of his bail application, which the state is opposing. Police and the investigating officer have indicated that Goqwana and a co-accused allegedly confessed to their roles, with the state further alleging that payments totalling R60,000 were made to those who carried out the shooting.

Tete, 38, was a highly respected figure in South African boxing. He held the IBF junior-bantamweight title and the WBO bantamweight title, and still holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest knockout in a world title fight. He had recently completed a doping ban and was preparing for a comeback.

Four men have been charged in connection with the case. The formal bail application for Goqwana and one co-accused continues this week, with the investigating officer under cross-examination and closing arguments expected. Police are also still looking for a fifth suspect believed to have been involved as a getaway driver.

Durban – A planned clean-up operation outside the Home Affairs offices on Moore Road (also known as Che Guevara Road) in Umbilo descended into heated confrontations on Thursday afternoon, 3 September 2026.

Foreign nationals who have been camping at the site for months refused to vacate the pavement area. Video footage circulating on social media shows groups of people arguing face-to-face, pointing, gesturing and recording the scene on their phones while police officers tried to keep order. Blue tarps and belongings littered the sidewalk, with some individuals standing firm as others from the March and March group pressed for the space to be cleared.

Police confirmed that the situation escalated when stones were thrown. A case is being registered against a foreign national alleged to have struck a police officer with a stone during the clash. No serious injuries beyond the officer’s reported incident have been detailed at this stage.

The camp has been a long-running issue. Many of those staying there say they are documented refugees or asylum seekers who left their homes earlier this year amid rising anti-foreigner tensions and threats across KwaZulu-Natal. Attempts to relocate the group to alternative sites earlier in the year did not fully succeed, leaving dozens still sleeping rough outside the government offices.

Local activists and residents involved in the clean-up cited ongoing dirt, blocked pavements and the extended occupation of public space as reasons for the action. Heated exchanges included claims of disrespect on both sides, with some campers stating they were not afraid and others questioning why the group remained in South Africa.

Johannesburg High Court proceedings took another turn today as accused number one, Musa Kekana, addressed the media after the court adjourned.

Kekana told reporters that police assaulted and tortured him on the day of his arrest in April 2024 in Bramley. He made the comments following the day’s session in the ongoing trial-within-a-trial linked to the Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala matter.

The mini-trial is examining allegations that Kekana was assaulted and suffocated by police after his arrest. This follows earlier testimony from a medical doctor who assessed him on the day he was admitted to hospital, as well as a paramedic who treated him.

Kekana and Michael P**e Tau were arrested shortly after the murder of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart. The broader case involves Matlala and co-accused facing multiple charges, including conspiracy and attempted murder related to other high-profile incidents. Fi****ms recovered during the investigation have been linked by the state to several cases.

Disbarred advocate Malesela Daniel Teffo rocked up at the Johannesburg High Court on Monday morning during proceedings linked to alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and his co-accused.

Teffo, dressed in his robes, is seeking to address the court and bring an application. He maintains that his 2022 removal from the roll of legal practitioners was fraudulent and that he should be allowed to participate. According to reports from the scene, he indicated he is acting on behalf of a pro-bono foundation that aims to assist people who cannot afford legal representation, and argued that the accused are being treated unfairly.

The Legal Practice Council (LPC) has been clear on the matter. In official statements, including one issued after Teffo’s criminal acquittal in July 2026, the LPC confirmed that he remains struck off the roll and has not been readmitted. “Mr Teffo remains struck from the roll of legal practitioners and has not been readmitted to the legal profession. He is therefore not entitled to practise as a legal practitioner in South Africa,” the council stated. Any return to practice would require a formal readmission application under the Legal Practice Act, which has not been approved.

Teffo was struck off by the Pretoria High Court in September 2022 following an application by the LPC based on multiple complaints of professional misconduct. The court found he no longer met the standard of a fit and proper person. Teffo has long disputed the process and previously described the court order as fraudulent.

The appearance comes in the high-profile case involving Matlala, who faces serious charges including attempted murder alongside co-accused. Separately, Matlala is linked to the ongoing R228-million SAPS Medicare24 tender corruption matter. The court is currently considering whether Teffo should be heard at all, given his barred status.
