BREAKING NEWS: Lesedi FM and SABC Face Backlash Over Song of the Year Choice
The Free State Music Association (FSMA) is demanding answers from Lesedi FM and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) after a relatively unknown song, Oufadafada's "Ya Itshepelang Modimo", was chosen as the station's 2025 Song of the Year.
The song, which was played at midnight on December 31, has sparked outrage among listeners, who took to social media to question the credibility and transparency of the selection process. The FSMA has given Lesedi FM and the SABC 24 hours to explain their decision, citing concerns that the song's selection was influenced by senior management interference.
"According to the charts, the song was number 34 on November 28 after being released on November 14. It did not receive significant airplay and was not widely popular," said Rhoda, representing FSMA.
The FSMA argues that other popular songs, including Magumba by Khadeair, had stronger public support but were overlooked. If their demands are not met, the association will escalate the matter to the SABC CEO and board members.
However, the SABC has denied FSMA's allegations, stating that Lesedi FM does not have a "song of the year" campaign and that the song played on New Year's Eve was not voted for by listeners or stakeholders.
The FSMA is pushing for clarity and transparency, appealing to Lesedi FM to issue a public response within 24 hours and requesting an urgent meeting with the station's leadership and the SABC.
