The History Behind the Coin & Its Art
These historic coins, minted before South Africa transitioned to decimal currency in 1961, feature intricate designs that reflect the country’s colonial history and maritime heritage.
Reverse (Back) – The Drommedaris Ship
Both the 1-penny and ½-penny coins feature the Drommedaris, the flagship of Jan van Riebeeck’s fleet that arrived at the Cape of Good Hope in 1652.
The Drommedaris, along with the Reijger and Goede Hoop, carried van Riebeeck and his crew as they established the first European settlement at the Cape under the Dutch East India Company (VOC).
This ship symbolizes South Africa’s early maritime history, trade, and exploration, marking the beginning of centuries of change in the region.
The detailed engraving of the ship on the coin represents the courage, ambition, and pioneering spirit of those who first set sail for South African shores.
By wearing a penny coin ring, you carry the story of South Africa’s seafaring past—a tribute to the adventurers, traders, and pioneers who shaped the nation’s early days.

Obverse (Front) – Unique Designs for Each Coin
1-Penny Coin (Larger Male Sizes)
The obverse of the 1-penny coin varies by year, but many feature King George VI (pre-1952) or Queen Elizabeth II (1953–1960), reflecting South Africa’s past as part of the British Commonwealth.
A ring made from a 1-penny coin is a bold statement piece, perfect for those who appreciate strong, classic designs with historical significance.
½-Penny Coin (More Feminine Sizes)
The ½-penny coin also features King George VI or Queen Elizabeth II, depending on the year of minting.
A ½-penny ring is an elegant, refined accessory that carries the same maritime heritage but in a more delicate, feminine size.

Handcrafted for Every Style
1-Penny Rings – Designed for larger male sizes, bold and rugged, featuring the powerful maritime symbol of the Drommedaris.
½-Penny Rings – Crafted for more feminine sizes, elegant and detailed, celebrating South Africa’s seafaring past.
Each ring is individually handcrafted, preserving the intricate details of the original coin, ensuring that no two rings are exactly alike.

💥💥💥Wear a Piece of South African History – Handcrafted 1c and 1/2c Coin Rings 💥💥💥
Step into the past with our handcrafted rings, made from genuine 1961 to 1964 South African 1-cent and ½-cent coins. These rings are more than just accessories—they are pieces of history, carrying the stories of a nation’s heritage, resilience, and unity.

The History Behind the Coin & Its Art
These coins were part of South Africa’s first decimal currency, introduced after becoming a republic in 1961. Each coin features artwork that reflects the country’s early colonial history and pioneering spirit.
Obverse (Front) – Jan van Riebeeck
Both the 1c and ½c coins feature a portrait of Jan van Riebeeck, the Dutch navigator and colonial administrator who founded the Cape Colony in 1652 under the Dutch East India Company (VOC).
Van Riebeeck is a controversial yet pivotal figure in South African history. His arrival at the Cape marked the beginning of European settlement in the region, which led to significant cultural, economic, and historical changes. His image was used on South African coins and banknotes for much of the 20th century, symbolizing the country’s colonial past.
Reverse (Back) – Traditional South African Symbols
1c Coin – “Kakebeen Ossewa” (Jawbone Ox-Wagon)
The reverse of the 1-cent coin showcases a “kakebeen ossewa”, or jawbone ox-wagon, which played a crucial role in South African history. This type of wagon was commonly used by Voortrekkers (Afrikaner pioneers) during the Great Trek (1835–1846) as they moved inland, escaping British rule in the Cape Colony.
The wagon represents persistence, exploration, and the pioneering spirit of early Afrikaners.
Its design, with curved “jawbone” beams, made it sturdy enough to handle South Africa’s rough terrain.
It became a national symbol of Afrikaner identity and self-reliance in the 20th century.
By wearing a 1c coin ring, you carry a piece of this pioneering legacy—a reminder of the journey, resilience, and spirit of South Africa’s early settlers.
½c Coin – Two “Mossies” (Cape Sparrows) Facing Each Other
The reverse of the ½c coin features two beautifully detailed Cape sparrows (mossies) facing each other, a charming and symbolic design.
Sparrows are known for their strong sense of community, adaptability, and resourcefulness—traits deeply woven into South African life.
Their facing positions could symbolize unity, love, and companionship, making this ring an elegant and meaningful choice.
The Cape sparrow is one of the most recognizable birds in South Africa, thriving in both rural and urban areas.
A ½c coin ring captures this essence of harmony, nature, and perseverance—making it perfect for those who appreciate a more delicate, symbolic piece of South African heritage.

Handcrafted for Every Style
1c Rings – Designed for larger male sizes, bold and rugged, with deep historical significance.
½c Rings – Crafted for more feminine sizes, elegant and timeless, featuring the sparrow’s symbol of unity.
Each ring is carefully shaped by hand, preserving the intricate details of the original coin, making every piece one-of-a-kind.
