A STATEMENT FROM MIC’D UP WITH MAJEME
We believe the community deserves an update regarding the matter involving a learner at Sukude Senior Secondary School in Tabankulu, Alfred Nzo District, Eastern Cape.
A learner previously came forward with serious concerns about her experience at the school, including being accused of witchcraft. The matter was subsequently taken up with the school, and the learner was called into a meeting where, according to her account, she was asked for witnesses. She says some learners were afraid to come forward and that she ultimately felt that her side was not properly heard.
She further tells us that she was asked to remove the matter from social media, while she still felt that the matter had not been properly resolved.
We have since learned that the learner has been admitted to another high school.
We are genuinely pleased that she has another opportunity to continue her education in a new environment, and we sincerely hope that she will find the support, safety and peace she deserves.
But we have to ask:
does changing schools mean justice has been served? We don't believe so.
We are not here to declare anyone guilty, nor are we calling for anyone to lose their job. We believe every allegation must be handled fairly and every person involved must be given an opportunity to be heard.
But we also believe that the child must be heard.
We would like to see her receive appropriate emotional support, counselling where necessary, and genuine acknowledgement of the impact this experience may have had on her.
So where does MIC’D UP WITH MAJEME come in?
The learner's story reached us because she needed her voice to be heard.
MIC’D UP WITH MAJEME was created to give young people a platform and to speak about issues affecting our communities. We therefore cannot claim to stand for the voiceless and then remain silent when a young person tells us she feels unheard.
Our goal is not to destroy anyone. Our goal is accountability, proper processes and the wellbeing of the child.
We want to see the concerns properly addressed, the learner supported, and meaningful steps taken to ensure that other learners feel safe enough to speak when they are experiencing something wrong.
