MPUMALANGA | A tragic crash in Mpumalanga has claimed the lives of two young people after a vehicle plunged into the Crocodile River in the early hours of Sunday morning, sparking a major search and rescue operation.

Mpumalanga police received a report about a white vehicle that had gone off the road and ended up in the river near the intersection between the University of Mpumalanga and KaMagugu. SAPS members, together with Search and Rescue teams, were dispatched to the scene, where they located the submerged vehicle with two occupants trapped inside.

Mpumalanga SAPS spokesperson Colonel Jabu Ndumane confirmed that the victims were a 20-year-old man and a young woman believed to be between 20 and 22 years old. The vehicle, which carried Mpumalanga registration plates, had fully submerged, making recovery efforts significantly more difficult.

The identities of the victims have not yet been officially released, pending the notification of their families.

At this stage, police say no foul play is suspected. However, investigators are working to determine the exact cause of the crash, including whether speed, poor visibility, or other contributing factors may have played a role.

Colonel Ndumane noted that because the incident occurred at an intersection, investigators are considering all possible scenarios to understand how the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The tragedy comes on the same weekend that a separate incident in the Eastern Cape also claimed lives after a vehicle veered off a road and plunged into water, with two bodies recovered from a submerged vehicle in Addo on Saturday, 7 June 2026, while a third person remained missing.

Investigations into the Mpumalanga crash are ongoing.

SOUTH AFRICA | The first flight of the second batch of Ghanaian nationals has departed South Africa, with passengers waving their national flags as they began the emotional journey back home to Ghana, part of an ongoing government-led repatriation exercise triggered by escalating anti-immigrant tensions across the country.

The Ghana High Commission in South Africa confirmed plans to fly the latest group of Ghanaian citizens home on Sunday, 7 June 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to assist nationals who wish to return to Ghana. Approved passengers were instructed to report to the High Commission on the evening of Saturday, 6 June, for verification, pre-departure procedures, and briefing.

The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria temporarily suspended new registrations for its voluntary repatriation programme on 2 June 2026, citing an overwhelming surge in applications. The Commission confirmed that over 1,500 Ghanaians had registered for repatriation, with verification and processing of applications underway in collaboration with South African Home Affairs officials.

There are an estimated 25,000 Ghanaians living in South Africa. The repatriation flights are being funded from Ghana's contingency budget, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Ablakwa.

SOUTH AFRICA | The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed it has launched an immediate investigation into the conduct of one of its officers after a video capturing an alleged bribery incident went viral on social media.

The footage, widely circulated on social media platforms, particularly Facebook, depicts a police official in full uniform allegedly returning a cash bribe to a member of the public.

The SAPS confirmed that the police officer featured in the video has been identified, and that immediate disciplinary processes have been instituted.

Gauteng police management says a departmental investigation has also been launched to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi emphasised that the acceptance, solicitation or facilitation of bribes is both a criminal offence and a serious breach of the SAPS Code of Conduct.

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni issued a stern condemnation of the incident. "The South African Police Service will not tolerate corruption in any form. Members who abuse their authority, compromise their integrity, or betray the trust placed in them by the public will be dealt with decisively. We are committed to ensuring that every allegation of corruption is thoroughly investigated and that appropriate disciplinary and criminal action is taken where warranted. Our communities deserve professional, ethical, and accountable policing, and we remain steadfast in protecting the integrity of the organisation," Mthombeni said.

Nevhuhulwi also urged members of the public to refrain from offering bribes and encouraged them to report any incidents of alleged corruption or extortion involving SAPS officers.

The incident is the latest in a series of bribery-related cases involving SAPS officers to surface on social media in 2026, reigniting public debate about corruption and accountability within the police service.

SOUTH AFRICA | President Cyril Ramaphosa will tonight address the nation from the Union Buildings in Pretoria at 18h00, in a highly anticipated address focused on South Africa's escalating migration crisis.

The Presidency confirmed the address in a statement issued Sunday morning, saying the President will outline the government's new plan for managing the migration crisis.

Ramaphosa is expected to provide details on a National Action Plan on migration, developed by an Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration, which was approved by Cabinet last week.

Anti-foreigner protests have spread across the country in recent days, with flare-ups reported in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape. Earlier this month, Ramaphosa pledged a tougher government response to migration issues while cautioning against xenophobia and vigilantism during the Presidency Budget Vote in Parliament.

Anti-immigration activists and groups, including March and March leader Jacinta Ngobese and Nkosikhona Ndabandaba, known as Phakelumthakathi, as well as political parties such as ActionSA, have been escalating pressure against illegal immigration, holding marches in Durban, Pretoria and Johannesburg. Locals have accused foreign nationals of taking jobs and competing for scarce basic services such as healthcare and education.

The anti-migrant group March and March has set a hard deadline of 30 June for undocumented foreign nationals to leave South Africa.

Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, speaking at a post-Cabinet briefing on Friday, said Cabinet had received and approved a comprehensive approach to managing migration in South Africa and had also approved the National Action Plan. She stressed that no shutdown of the country would be permitted.

Ntshavheni acknowledged citizens' constitutional right to protest, but warned against unlawful actions, saying: "There will never be another shutdown of this country, there will never be another destabilisation of this country."

Security structures are also reportedly discussing proposals to prevent further unrest linked to undocumented migrants, including investigations into individuals regarded as instigators. The Department of Correctional Services is additionally considering the deportation of qualifying foreign prison inmates to their home countries.

SABC will provide a broadcast feed to all media, and PresidencyZA will live stream the proceedings across various digital platforms.
