WHAT HAPPENED ON THIS DAY IN SOUTH AFRICAN HISTORY 💡

On this day 18 October in 1985,Benjamin Moloise was hanged for allegedly killing a police officer.

Black upholsterer and poet, Benjamin Moloise was executed by apartheid government on this day in 1985.

Moloise was accused of murdering a black police officer. The African National Congress claimed responsibility for the murder and repudiated the claim that Moloise was involved.
The US and the Soviet Union warned the apartheid government against the ex*****on, but the government still decided to go ahead with it. The ex*****on aroused so much anger in the townships that violence escalated.

It spiraled out of control and subsequently reached areas like the Johannesburg CBD which had previously remained sheltered from it.

He was only 30 years old when he was hanged.

TODAY,OUR PLACE OF CHOICE IS GROOT MARICO.

Groot Marico is a small, historic town situated along the N4 between Zeerust and Rustenburg.

Its roots trace back to the 1850s when Voortrekkers settled in the area, and it was officially proclaimed a town in 1948. The town developed around agriculture, with crops like maize, to***co, and citrus, as well as mining activities including marble, slate, and andalusite.

The town is also renowned for producing mampoer, a strong fruit brandy that remains a part of local tradition and attracts visitors to artisanal distilleries.

In 2017, Groot Marico gained national attention when a R1.8 million monument was erected to commemorate former President Jacob Zuma’s 1963 arrest near the town while he and other Umkhonto we Sizwe recruits were en route to military training in Botswana.

Today, Groot Marico thrives on a combination of agriculture, mining, and tourism.
