JOHANNESBURG - About 41 South Africans are pleading for help after escaping a human-trafficking ring in Myanmar.

They were trafficked to Southeast Asia under false employment promises.

While they managed to escape the scammer's compound, they are now stuck in the conflict-ridden country.

Emma van der Walt from Brave to Love said South Africans and Namibians are targeted.

"They want you to speak good English and have experience in IT," Van der Walt said.

"They were trafficked to these compounds and need to pay bail today."

🇺🇸US President Donald Trump has threatened military action against Nigeria, accusing the government of allowing the killing of Christians.

He vowed to stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria and take military action to “completely wipe out Islamic terrorists whom he accused of committing horrible atrocities.”

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said his country opposed religious persecution and had constitutional guarantees to protect citizens of all faiths.

Trump called Nigeria a disgraced country, threatening to go in “guns-a-blazing” to wipe out what he called Islamic terrorists, adding that he’d instructed the Pentagon, which is also now called the Department of War, to prepare for possible action.

He said if Nigeria were attacked, it would be fast, vicious and sweet.

He warned the Nigerian government, which has rejected the claims to act fast.

While Christians are among those targeted, the majority of victims are Muslims in Nigeria’s Muslim-majority north, where most attacks occur.

President Tinubu said Trump’s labelling of Nigeria as “a country of concern” was not a reflection of the reality on the ground.

The Polokwane High Court has convicted and sentenced 32-year-old Mahlatse Tolonyane Mathote Matebane, from Manapyane Village, to an effective 25 years of direct imprisonment for a series of violent crimes committed across the policing areas of Motetema, Rakgoadi and Dennilton under the Sekhukhune District.
The sentence follows extensive investigations conducted by Detective Sergeant Raymond Phago, attached to the Sekhukhune District Investigation and Tracking Task Team, who successfully linked the accused to several cases of r**e, attempted murder, robbery, housebreaking, and possession of unlicensed fi****ms and ammunition.
On 30 October 2025, the Polokwane High Court found the accused guilty on nine counts. The total sentence amounted to 125 years’ imprisonment. The court, however, ordered that counts two to nine run concurrently with count one, resulting in an effective sentence of 25 years’ direct imprisonment.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Major General Jan Scheepers, has commended the investigating officer and all members involved in ensuring that justice was served. “This sentencing sends a clear message that gender-based violence and acts of brutality will not be tolerated. The dedication of our investigators in linking the accused to multiple cases is commendable and demonstrates our unwavering commitment to protecting vulnerable members of our communities,” said Major General Scheepers.
