Medical services amendment bill- a step in the right direction

By Staff writer

STAKEHOLDERS have welcomed the Medical Services amendment Bill, describing proposed amendments as positive for the health care system in the country.

INERELA Zimbabwe, East and Southern Africa ambassador Paul Juru gave a positive review of the bill.

The Bill, seeks to align the health sector to the provisions of the constitution.

On Tuesday, Justice,Legal and Parliamentary affairs minister Ziyambi Ziyambi announced some of the proposed changes during its second reading stage in parliament.

Some of the key changes to the law includes the provision that private hospitals will require government approval to increase their charges.

They will also be compelled by law,to admit patients with life threatening conditions for at least 48 hours without demanding payment upfront.

"The bill's provisions to cap private hospital fees and mandate emergency treatment without upfront payment will undoubtedly enhance access to SRHR services for these marginalized groups," Juru said.

"The requirement for private health facilities to provide emergency treatment for at least 48 hours, regardless of financial status, is a lifeline for many who would otherwise be denied critical care."

He added: "I commend the government's commitment to aligning the health sector with constitutional guarantees on access to care, as enshrined in Section 76 of the Constitution. This bill is a testament to the government's dedication to promoting human dignity and ensuring that access to treatment is not based on wealth but on need."

Court drama in Gweru miner case....as prosecutor accused of influencing state witness

By Stephen Chadenga

There was drama in court Thursday as the defence counsel in a case in which Gweru miner and businessman Charles Simbi and his wife Zodwa are charged with fraud and forgery accused the prosecutor of making facial expressions to a state witness during cross-examination to influence responses.

The couple's lawyer Esau Mandipa was cross examining one Mawere when he suddenly objected to prosecutor Fredrick Macheza's alleged non-verbal communication to the witness to "guide" his (witness) responses to the questions posed to him by the defence counsel.

"This is unprofessional your worship. My learned colleague is making gestures to the witness before he responses to my questions. Can he just be professional to enable a fair trial,"an unamused Mandipa said.

Back in the fold

Forgotten defender, Ricky Bota, who has found a new home at Central Region Soccer League side Grain Tigers is set to make a return to competitive football since 2019.

Bota last featured in a competitive match when he was on the books or Air force of Zimbabwe side Chapungu.

Since leaving Chapungu, Bota was signed by Sheasham but never featured for the Construction boys in league football due to the COVID-19.

He later joined TelOne but struggled to break into the Wifi boys side in 2023.

However, he has now gotten a chance to redeem his career at the Kwekwe side, where, together with former TelOne winger Collins Chidomaya, are the marquee signings.

Grain Tigers will play Chapungu at Ascot stadium today.
