The Downtown Music Hub was established by the Department of Arts and Culture to address challenges faced by the music industry around access to recording facilities and production of high quality music. The Department facilitated the purchase of the building in downtown Johannesburg that houses the legendary Downtown Studios. The Downtown Music Hub was formed to spearhead the process, and was task

ed with refurbishing the studios and renovating the building with a view to creating a "state of the art" production and post-production facility. The Downtown Studios are legendary within the South African music recording industry and have retained the professionally designed acoustic environments that offer a special unique flavour to live recordings. The Hub boasts highly esteemed individuals in the music industry with years of experience in both the production and music management and who have guided the process ensuring that Downtown Studios is a top notch African facility. The Downtown Music Hub aims to become the catalyst for the advancement of musicians, creating jobs and promoting entrepreneurship within the industry. This will be done by facilitating the economic empowerment of South African artists and other industry role players, specifically those from previously disadvantaged communities.

Where do you begin telling the story of Downtown Music Hub? I guess it does not matter when or with whom, the studios are a central part of the South African music story.

. People travelled from all over the country (and surrounding countries) to record at Downtown Music Hub. Clap and Tap groups booked out most Saturdays. They arrive to Joburg by bus or organised transport, spend the night in studio (6pm - 6am).

They would shower the next day and dress us for photos and a music video then back home. We have +30 AmaZion groups that had booked the hub, through an award show. That booking is now moved indefinitely.

we undertook a massive project of building a music precinct. It had us doing more than just music. Engagements with architects, writing reports on our building, meetings with museum designers, Joburg Development Agency, Joburg Road Agency, partnerships with Placemaking organisations like JICP, monthly meetings in the tourism sector, community meetings and many other engagements.

Here, the Johannesburg Development Agency, was reworking pavements on Goud Street. They have planned to do this and meetings were held to align, through our partners. The idea was that Downtown Music Hub is not an island and to collaborate and partner will do more good.

Do you remember this? We (Downtown Music Hub plus three neighbouring buildings) did a door to door in downtown Johannesburg, accompanied by police. Called for a meeting. Created a committee to look after this area of town, supported by the Joburg Police sector 6 team. After months of meetings, we decided we need consistent police visibility around the area for the safety of our clients, the tenants and community around. 5 buildings (including Downtown Music Hub) bought a trailer and donated it to SAPS to brand and setup a satellite police station at the corner of Fox and Goud (just outside our building).

On this day, we formally celebrated our efforts and launched the satellite office that made sure of consistent police presence. Department of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton Mckenzie
