DAUGHTER PLEADS GUILTY TO MURDER OF HER FATHER IN LIMPOPO
Polokwane, South Africa β The Polokwane High Court has sentenced Mologadi Magdeline Mehlape (28) to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of her father, Dr Malekutu Johannes Mehlape, a respected Circuit Manager at the Limpopo Department of Education. The murder took place on 28 December 2023 at the deceasedβs home in Mankweng Zone 1, just outside Polokwane.
Mehlape pleaded guilty under Section 112(2) of the Criminal Procedure Act to charges of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances, and received an additional 15 years for robbery, to run concurrently with the life sentence.
Background of the Crime
The court heard that Mehlape was driven by a belief instilled by Accused 3, traditional healer Hlologelo Klaas Mogotlane, that her father had used muthi (witchcraft) to cause her motherβs death. After failed attempts to retaliate through traditional rituals, Mehlape plotted her fatherβs murder, agreeing to pay R200,000 to hire a hitman.
On the night of the killing, Mehlape unlocked the gate and main door to allow the killers entry. Her father was ambushed in his bedroom while asleep, shot multiple times, and robbed. Items stolen included his cellphone. A Ford Ranger double cab believed to have been used in the crime was recovered, along with the firearm used, seized during an arrest in Zebediela.

Courtβs View
Although Mehlape apologised and claimed to be the sole caregiver of her one-year-nine-month-old daughter, State Advocate Muneiwa Ratshibvumo argued that her plea was driven by overwhelming evidence rather than remorse. The prosecutor described the crime as βgruesome and heartlessβ, urging the court to uphold the minimum prescribed sentence.
