What a spectacular evening watching the Charl du Plessis Trio perform Bach & Beatles at Emnotweni Arena.

Charl du Plessis on grand piano, Werner Spies on bass and Peter Auret on drums were absolutely brilliant. Their stage presence, chemistry and musicianship are something else.

What made the show so special was the way they brought classical music and jazz together, taking familiar classical pieces and reimagining them through swing, blues and bossa nova, alongside some of The Beatles’ most iconic music.

And then there’s Charl’s personality. He had the audience in stitches throughout the evening.

Before playing Mozart’s Symphony No. 40, he warned that some of us might suddenly find ourselves reaching for our old Nokia cellphones when we recognised the tune.

Another favourite: “For the English people who cannot verstaan Afrikaans, the following song will be performed in English.” Even funnier considering they are an instrumental trio with no vocals.

The music moved from Mozart and other classical favourites, including Ode to Joy and Rossini’s Largo al factotum, to incredible arrangements of Bach and The Beatles, and Beatles favourites such as Hey Jude and Let It Be.

Their performance of Let It Be was heart-wrenchingly beautiful — I may have shed a tear.

They finished their encore with their most requested song, Summertime.

Classical meets jazz. Bach meets The Beatles. Brilliant music, brilliant humour and three phenomenal musicians. An unforgettable performance.
