The Mirror Trading International (MTI) saga, South Africa’s largest pyramid scheme, could lead to criminal prosecutions and hefty civil penalties for its promoters and directors, as stated by Pieter Walters, a senior associate at Barnard Incorporated Attorneys. The Bitcoin-based scam, which began in 2019, promised monthly returns of 10% and attracted global members, growing substantially during the 2020 Covid-19 lockdown. The Western Cape High Court ruled in April 2023 that MTI was a pyramid and Ponzi-type scam. Despite appeals by former MTI referral program head Clynton Marks, the National Prosecuting Authority can proceed with investigations, with liquidators potentially pursuing civil claims against scheme directors. The Financial Sector Conduct Authority had initiated criminal proceedings against MTI in December 2020, and the scheme collapsed in 2020 after its CEO went missing in Brazil. MTI’s liquidators estimate approximately 29,421 bitcoins flowed through the scheme, making it South Africa’s largest pyramid or Ponzi-like scheme, with a lower estimate valuing it at R25.9 billion.
