Flashy perks don’t matter like they used to. Today’s candidates care about:
• Job security
• Growth and career paths
• Stability and meaningful work
Talk about how you’ve looked after employees in tough times, not how many beanbags you have in the office.
3. Navigate the budget talk with confidence
Delaying a key hire is often more expensive than making it. Frame it like this:
• What revenue or efficiency is lost each month this role sits open?
• What competitive ground are you gaining by hiring while others pull back?
• What quality of talent is suddenly available that wasn’t before?
And don’t forget… flexible hiring models (contract-to-hire, phased starts, project-based) can help reduce risk and get leadership buy-in.
Hiring Conversations That Matter
When interviewing, go deeper than technical skills. Ask about:
• How they’ve adapted when resources were cut.
• Times they delivered value under pressure.
• How they measure their own impact.
You’re not just hiring skills. You’re hiring resilience.
The Talent Pool Is Shifting
Layoffs, stalled promotions, shaky startups - all of this means exceptional people are suddenly open to new opportunities.
You’ll find them if you:
• Reconnect with strong candidates from past processes.
• Network in industries where redundancies are happening.
• Offer flexible structures like part-time, consultancy, or contract-to-perm.
Negotiating in a Different Landscape
Candidates are more flexible on salary, notice periods, and start dates.
But they won’t compromise on feeling valued, having clarity in their role, or knowing the company is stable.
So, focus less on shaving costs, and more on showing the whole package: security, growth, culture, long-term potential.
