The French revolution changed the course of human history. Popular protest overthrew a monarchy and called called for greater democracy.
FRANCE IN 1789 .
1.It was successful ruled by an absolute monarchy and a feudal aristocracy .
2.She faced major financial and economic problems which caused social distress.
3.The country was influenced by new ideas of philosophers about individual freedoms .
THE CAUSES AND COURSE OF THE REVOLUTION.
1. The Estates General was summoned in 1789 and formed a National Assembly .
2. Popular protests broke out in Paris .
3.The National Assembly declared the Rights Of Man and Citizen .
4.The king tried to escape and was recaptured .
5.More radical calls for a Republic by the Jacobins led to the formation of the National Convention and the ex*****on of the king and queen in 1793.
6.A Reign of Terror followed and many people were killed .
6.The example of the French Revolution encouraged opposition to the authoritarian governments elsewhere in Europe .
7.Other European powers declared war on the French revolutionaries .
NAPOLEAN AND THE REACTION AGAINST DEMOCRACY.
1.The Directory replaced the National Convention in 1795.
2.An army general , Napoleon , became First Consul and then Emperor in 1804.
3.Napoleon carried out many reforms which modernised France .
4.Napoleon overthrew democratic forms of government.
5.Napoleaon conquered much of Europe but was finally defeated in 1815.
THE IMPACT OF THE REVOLUTION .
1.In the 1790s slaves under Toussaint I' Ouverture defeated their owners and achieved an independent republic called HAIT in 1804.
2.Uprisings took place in Europe throughout the 19th century calling for greater democracy ...
