Newcastle squander two-goal lead in thrilling 2-2 draw with Chelsea

NEWCASTLE, England, Dec 20 - Newcastle United were held to a 2-2 draw by Chelsea after Nick Woltemade's first-half double was cancelled out by a Reece James free kick and Joao Pedro equaliser in an entertaining clash in the Premier League on Saturday.

Woltemade's double inside 20 minutes had Newcastle flying but once again Eddie Howe's side squandered a lead, extending their clean sheet drought to 10 Premier League games after a resurgent Chelsea made a stirring comeback in the second half.

The result leaves Chelsea in fourth place with 29 points while Newcastle, whose defensive frailties continue to cost them precious points, remain in the bottom half in 11th with 23.

"It was clearly a game of two halves. In the first half they got the better of us in nearly every department," James told TNT Sports.

"Second half, we came out, we had to review and change a few things. We started the second half quick and the game turned quickly."

WOLTEMADE MAKES AMENDS

Still smarting from Sunday's derby defeat at Sunderland , Newcastle burst out of the blocks and needed less than four minutes to take the lead at a raucous St James' Park when Woltemade made amends for his own goal last week.

Jacob Murphy's cross found Anthony Gordon at the far post but Chelsea's Robert Sanchez made a superb save, only for the ball to fall to Woltemade in the box and the Germany striker fired home the rebound.

Chelsea were rattled and before they could recover found themselves 2-0 down when Gordon curled another cross in and Woltemade stuck a leg out to direct the ball inside the far post.

Woltemade was inches away from a first-half hat-trick when Gordon found him with another tantalising cross, but the striker volleyed just wide while Lewis Miley also headed over from a set-piece before the halftime whistle.

JAMES FREE KICK PROVIDES BREAKTHROUGH

Chelsea needed inspiration after the break and their captain James provided it four minutes after the restart when he stood over a free kick and curled his shot past the outstretched arm of Aaron Ramsdale to make it 2-1.

It was Chelsea's first shot on target and galvanised Enzo Maresca's side.

Newcastle attempted to respond and were also denied a penalty when Trevoh Chalobah made a robust challenge on Gordon without playing the ball but their appeals were dismissed by the referee and VAR.

Newcastle's lead evaporated in the 66th minute when Sanchez launched a long ball for Joao Pedro, who escaped marker Malick Thiaw, who slipped, before placing his shot past Ramsdale.

"I told him (Sanchez) at halftime to play this ball to me. I controlled the ball in front and I scored a brilliant goal," Joao Pedro told the BBC.

Chelsea were fired up and James once again led by example when he tracked back to deny Newcastle substitute Harvey Barnes, sliding in just as the winger was about to pull the trigger.

Barnes nearly snatched the win when he got on the end of a cross and volleyed with power but his shot flew inches wide of the far post as the home fans let out a collective groan.

Brandt double not enough as Dortmund held to 2-2 draw by Bodo/Glimt

DORTMUND, Germany, đŸ‡©đŸ‡Ș - Julian Brandt scored two goals for Borussia Dortmund but they had to settle for a point as visitors Bodo/Glimt twice came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw in their Champions League clash on Wednesday.

The draw leaves Dortmund 10th in the table with 11 points from their six games, while Bodo/Glimt remain winless and in 32nd place with three draws from their six fixtures.

Brandt gave Dortmund the lead following a poor pass from Haitam Aleesami, but the latter made amends when he equalised just before halftime.

The home side applied plenty of pressure after the break and were rewarded early as Brandt netted his second with a tap-in from a rebound, before Jens Petter Hauge restored parity again for the visitors 15 minutes from the end.

"We started to play erratically," Dortmund captain Nico Schlotterbeck told DAZN. "The players who came in lost every ball. Some were not aware of how important this game was."

Bodo/Glimt are enjoying a debut season in the Champions League and while they are yet to register a win, there have been signs they are getting to grips with the competition and this was another accomplished display.

Dortmund will feel they had enough chances to win it though with the lion’s share of possession and 22 shots at goal, but wayward finishing and some fine goalkeeping denied them three points.

The home side took the lead on 18 minutes as a quick counter-attack after Aleesami's poor pass in midfield created a three-on-one situation for the hosts and Fabio Silva picked out Brandt on the left, who supplied a composed finish.

Maximilian Beier put a free header wide of goal for the hosts shortly afterwards as the visitors drew level three minutes before the break.

Patrick Berg’s delivery from a short corner was perfect for Aleesami to head into the back of the net and make up for his earlier error.

Dortmund restored their advantage five minutes after halftime as Brandt scored his second of the game.

Beier's header was only parried by Bodo/Glimt goalkeeper Nikita Haikin and Brandt was left with a simple tap-in from the rebound.

But the visitors kept pushing for an equaliser and levelled the score 15 minutes from the end as Hauge finished emphatically when the ball fell to him in the box.

Haaland scores, Mbappe watches from the bench as Man City beats Real Madrid 2-1 in Champions League

Rodrygo opened the scoring for Real Madrid, but Nico O’Reilly and Erling Haaland scored in a span of eight minutes to secure full points for Manchester City.

Nico O’Reilly’s opportunistic strike and Erling Haaland’s penalty helped Manchester City to fight back to beat Real Madrid 2-1 in a tense Champions League contest at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.

Rodrygo opened the scoring for Madrid, but O’Reilly and Haaland scored in a span of eight minutes to secure full points for City in the Spanish capital.

The victory pushed Pep Guardiola’s side up to fourth in the Champions League standings with 13 points from six games, while Madrid dropped to seventh with 12 points after suffering its second straight defeat in all competitions.

The Bernabeu crowd voiced its discontent with manager Xabi Alonso, jeering throughout the match as Madrid continued a poor run of form, having now won just two of its last eight games across all competitions.

“It wasn’t enough, we go away very frustrated. We had a great first half, we wanted to start strong, we scored... we need to improve,” Rodrygo told Movistar Plus.

“These matches are decided by details, set pieces... that’s why it’s frustrating for us because we train for it and it happens, but anyway we have to keep going.”

Despite missing eight injured players, including top scorer Kylian Mbappe — who only made the bench after skipping training on Tuesday — Madrid started strongly.

After Vinicius Jr. and Federico Valverde came close to scoring, the breakthrough came in the 28th minute when Rodrygo ended his nine-month scoring drought for Madrid with a low strike into the bottom corner.

City’s response was sluggish in the opening half-hour, failing to register a shot on target and appearing vulnerable to Madrid’s attacks down the left, with Alvaro Carreras combining well with Vinicius. But Madrid undid its early work with costly defensive errors.

City equalised in the 35th minute from its first real chance — O’Reilly pounced on Courtois’s rebound, and the visiting side grabbed the lead five minutes later, after Rudiger dragged down Haaland inside the box.

Referee Clement Turpin initially allowed play to continue but was advised to check the pitchside monitor by VAR. The German defender’s foul on Haaland was clear, and the Norwegian stepped up to dispatch the penalty with a low shot to Courtois’s right in the 43rd minute for his first-ever goal at the Bernabeu.

City finished the first half on the front foot, with Courtois producing excellent saves to deny Haaland and Rayan Cherki from adding to the lead, while Madrid headed into halftime to a chorus of whistles from its frustrated fans.

Guardiola’s side maintained its control after the break, deploying the pace and flair of Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku to stretch Madrid’s defence.

Courtois continued to be the standout performer for Madrid, stopping Foden and Doku in the 51st and 61st minutes respectively, while City was relentless in seeking a killer third goal.

Madrid had chances to equalise — with Endrick coming closest, striking the post in the dying minutes — but was unable to find the breakthrough as the home crowd’s jeers grew louder with every missed opportunity.

“Such a good feeling. To come here, what an atmosphere, what a stadium, so tough to come here, but we got the three points, and that’s the most important thing,” O’Reilly told TNT Sports.

Jamie Carragher says Liverpool's win at Inter Milan was "massive" for Arne Slot and shows the fans are behind him.

The three points in the Champions League not only give Slot a much-needed reprieve from the noise surrounding him in a week where he has been engulfed in a public falling out with Mohamed Salah, but they have also strengthened his side's position in Europe as they seek qualification to the knockout rounds, with Liverpool climbing into the top eight in the league phase.

Carragher said on CBS: "I was so desperate for Liverpool to win tonight, as I am every time they play, but more so for the manager for what he's been through over the last few days.

"I don't know him that well, have any real relationship with him, but he's the Liverpool manager.

"We know what's gone on and what was really telling was the supporters chanting his name in the first half when it was 0-0
they're right behind their manager, even more so on the back of that result.

"It was a massive result, it's a tough place to go and Liverpool needed that on the back of losing their last game at home in the Champions League to PSV.

"I'm happy for him more than anything. It's been tough all season for him. As a manager, he has to do better in terms of getting more results with the squad of players he's got, but that's a huge result for him and the club.

"I'm over the moon for him."

Slot admits last few days have cost Liverpool 'energy'

Liverpool boss Slot refused to be drawn on any Salah updates with the player dropped for this game due to his extraordinary outburst after Saturday's draw against Leeds, instead wanting to focus on the players that were at the San Siro and delivered the 1-0 win.

Slot said: "I think it was really hard for the players to concede in the last minute against Leeds, where, in my opinion, we already played a very good game. We hardly conceded a chance. In the last four games in general, we've hardly conceded a chance.

"To go away there with three goals conceded and a draw was really hard to take. And then that was already emotional. Then what happened afterwards was emotional, I think as well. It cost maybe a little bit of energy. Fourth game in 10 days, 13 outfield players available that have Premier League or Champions League experience, that shows you the resilience of these players.

"Then of course there's a lot of things being said, and I think that always affects a team a little bit as well. If you've been in the dressing room, you know, OK, it's about a player with the manager or with the club, but that normally affects players a bit as well, especially because he's so good, so, so, so influential for the club and for the players. So it's never nice, I think, to see something happen like this to one of their team-mates.

"All the focus should be on that tonight, and I can fully understand if I go Friday again into the press conference that all questions will be about Mo, but I think these players deserve it now that we speak about them."

Slot: Should the initiative come from me or Salah?

Slot did question whether Salah understands that he has made a mistake with his recent comments and suggested that it is up to a player to initiate a conversation with him to get back into the Liverpool team.

Slot clarified his comments in the press conference, suggesting he wasn't hinting that Salah should make first move.

"Of course there's a lot of things being said, and I think that always affects a team a little bit as well," Slot said post-match to Amazon Prime.

"If you've been in the dressing room you know it's about a player with the manager or with the club, but that normally affects players a bit as well, especially because he's so good and so influential.

"It's never nice to see something like this happen to one of your team-mates.

"Everyone makes mistakes in life, so the first thing should be, does the player think he's made a mistake as well?

"Then the next question is, should the initiative come from me or from him? Now, that's another question to answer. But as I said, the focus for tonight should be about, for example, Virgil [Van Dijk], because the fans are singing for him."

Chelsea's hopes of a top-eight finish in the Champions League took a blow as they were beaten 2-1 by Atalanta thanks to a late goal from Charles De Ketelaere.

The Serie A side have lost only once at home this season, while Enzo Maresca's side are yet to win away in Europe, having now lost twice and drawn once. They are now winless in their last four games in all competitions.

Atalanta began brightly and would have gone ahead were it not for a sensational block from Josh Acheampong to deny Ademola Lookman on his first Champions League start.

Chelsea made the initial breakthrough in the 25th minute. Reece James' fizzing cross was finished by Joao Pedro, but the offside flag immediately went up.

The forward wagged his finger in disagreement - and he was right. VAR stepped in and found both James and Joao Pedro were onside, and the goal was given.

Atalanta had not scored in the first half of a European game this season, and while they couldn't end that particular run they did find the net shortly after half-time - but not before James missed a huge chance to double Chelsea's lead.

The hosts equalised when De Ketelaere sent in a superb cross for former West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca to nod home.

Atalanta maintained their pressure, and always looked the most likely to score another. The in-form De Ketelaere had a slice of luck with his winner too as his shot deflected off Marc Cucurella - who was backing off the forward - and fizzed through the outstretched hand of Robert Sanchez.

It is the second game in a row the Belgian has registered two goal involvements, with Atalanta now up to third in the Champions League table.

Chelsea saw late chances from Alejandro Garnacho, James and Joao Pedro go begging, and as a result, they drop out of the top eight. They are now 11th, two points from the automatic round-of-16 spots.

Flick's Barça embraces comebacks: against Frankfurt, the fourth in a row!

Hansi Flick's Barça chains its fourth consecutive comeback and already has seven this season, with a decisive Koundé in the European return to Spotify Camp Nou

Hansi Flick's FC Barcelona continues to demonstrate surprising competitive strength. In the return of a European match to the Spotify Camp Nou, the Blaugrana overcame Eintracht Frankfurt (2-1) thanks to a brace from Jules Koundé in the early minutes of the second half.

The triumph not only keeps the team on an upward trajectory but also extends a historic record: Barça has now strung together four consecutive comebacks and has seven so far in the 2025/26 season. The victory against Eintracht came after a sluggish first half, in which the Germans took advantage of their only clear chance to take the lead.

But the script was the same as in previous matches: an insistent **Barça**, confident in its approach and capable of turning the score around with a mix of conviction, energy, and collective determination. Flick's team has made the word comeback a recurring hallmark.

4 comebacks in a row: the figures of a Barça accustomed to reacting

Hansi Flick's team has made resilience one of its main strengths. Since his arrival, Barça has achieved a total of 16 comebacks spread across last season and the current one:

9 comebacks in the 2024/25 season 7 comebacks in the 2025/26 season
And the four consecutive comebacks in question — **AlavĂ©s (3-1), AtlĂ©tico (3-1), Betis (3-5) and Eintracht (2-1)** — show a clear pattern: even when the team suffers, it rarely loses its identity or emotional control

In total, 16 of the 60 victories achieved by Barça with Flick on the bench have come after falling behind on the scoreboard. A notable percentage that speaks to both the group's competitive ability and the German coach's tactical impact.

Hansi Flick's 16 Barcelona Comebacks

2024/25 Season

Valencia 1-2 Barcelona
Rayo 1-2 Barcelona
Barcelona 5-2 Real Madrid
Benfica 4-5 Barcelona
Atlético 2-4 Barcelona
Barcelona 4-3 Celta
Barcelona 3-2 Real Madrid
Valladolid 1-2 Barcelona
Barcelona 4-3 Real Madrid

2025/26 Season

Levante 2-3 Barcelona
Real Oviedo 1-3 Barcelona
Barcelona 2-1 Real Sociedad
Barcelona 3-1 Alavés
Barcelona 3-1 Atlético
Betis 3-5 Barcelona

Barcelona 2-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
Historic milestone: Barça had never come back from four consecutive matches

Until this week, the Barcelona club had never strung together four victories after falling behind on the scoreboard. A record that defines the personality of Hansi Flick's team and that directly links to their way of competing: constant high pressing, offensive rhythm, tactical variety, and emotional capacity to sustain difficult matches.

With this new comeback, FC Barcelona reinforces an emotional state that has become its trademark: the ability to react to adversity and the firmness to turn around difficult matches. The team continues to accumulate arguments to believe in a solid, competitive project prepared to fight for everything.

Bayern Munich 3-1 Sporting CP: Karl scores again in Champions League comeback

Bayern Munich moved up to second in the Champions League table after coming from behind with three second-half goals against Sporting CP.

Lennart Karl scored for the third Champions League game in a row as Bayern Munich came from a goal down to beat Sporting CP 3-1 on Tuesday.

Having found the back of the net against Club Brugge and Arsenal, the talented teenager netted in the 69th minute to put Bayern ahead before Jonathan Tah sealed the victory.

Bayern thought they had taken an early lead when Karl curled home in the fifth minute, but his strike was ruled out for an offside against Serge Gnabry in the build-up.

Vincent Kompany's team continued to turn the screw in search of the opening goal, with Rui Silva's sprawling save denying Gnabry's effort from the left-hand side shortly after.

But Sporting kept Manuel Neuer on his toes at the other end when Tah slid Ousmane Diomande's cross towards his own net, forcing a reflex stop from Bayern's captain.

The pace of the match quickly continued as Harry Kane struck the base of the post seven minutes before half-time, but the visitors were able to withstand their opponents' flurry.

And just nine minutes after the restart, Allianz Arena was stunned into silence when Joshua Kimmich turned Joao Simoes' delivery beyond Neuer's dive from six yards out.

However, Sporting's joy was short-lived as an unmarked Gnabry volleyed Michael Olise's corner to the back post past Silva in the 65th minute to restore parity in the contest.

Bayern's comeback was then complete in double-quick time, with Karl brilliantly collecting Konrad Laimer's ball into the box before finishing past Silva at his near post.

Tah added further gloss to the scoreline 13 minutes from time, with Kimmich's cross headed back across goal by Gnabry for the defender to finish first time into the net.

Data Debrief: Karl comes up clutch to make Champions League history

Bayern were left battered and bruised after losing away to Arsenal in their last European encounter, but they got themselves back on track for a top-eight finish here thanks to their teenage star.

Indeed, aged 17 years and 290 days, Karl became the youngest player in the competition's history (since 1992-93) to score in three consecutive appearances, and he more than made his mark on Europe's biggest stage once again.

The Bayern youngster ended the contest with a team-high total number of shots (five), while only Olise created more chances (five to three), had more successful dribbles (six to three) and won more duels (10 to six) than Karl.

The Bundesliga giants also continued their impressive home record at this stage of the Champions League. They are now unbeaten in their last 37 matches at Allianz Arena (W35 D2) since a defeat to Manchester City in December 2013.

And they were worthy of their win here, despite going a goal behind. Kompany's team ended the game with an expected goals (xG) total of 2.16 from their 23 shots to Sporting's 0.28 from their four attempts, none of which were on target.

Kairat falls to Olympiacos in home Champions League match

Almaty’s Kairat hosted Greece’s Olympiacos in a main stage Champions League fixture at Astana Arena, reports a Qazinform News Agency correspondent.

From the opening minutes, the initiative belonged to the visiting side. Olympiacos launched a series of dangerous attacks, and only the confident play of goalkeeper Temirlan Anarbekov kept Kairat in the game throughout the first half.

After the interval, the home team refreshed its lineup with Valery Gromyko and Jorginho, which allowed Kairat to create several promising chances. However, the Greek club opened the scoring when Gelson Martins netted from a sharp angle. Shortly afterward, the woodwork rescued Kairat three times, and the match concluded with a 0-1 defeat for the Almaty side.

Kairat entered the game without its young forward Dastan Satpayev, who did not play due to suspension.

The team will now prepare to face Belgium’s Brugge in Astana on 20 January.

What’s Really Going on with Cole Palmer’s Fitness Issues?

It has been quite an awkward start to the season for Chelsea. It started with dropping points against the likes of Crystal Palace, Brentford, Manchester United and Brighton, with a defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League too.

But now, Maresca faces another issue. Cole Palmer’s fitness has become a worry, with the midfielder only completing two full 90 minutes so far this season.

Despite his lack of minutes, Palmer has still shown his worth by scoring two goals this season, including one away at Bayern Munich.

However, he is now set to miss Saturday’s crucial clash with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

Injury expert Ben Dinnery spoke exclusively to EPL Index and shared his insight on Palmer’s fitness issues

What’s wrong with Palmer?

When asked about the details of Palmer’s fitness, Dinnery said: “It’s a groin related problem. Just the dynamic nature of his style of play with those quick changes of direction, you see players like that managing groin injuries.”

“We’ve heard Enzo Maresca say that they’re going to leave him until after the international break, so they’re just managing the workload.”

Dinnery also suggested that Chelsea’s participation in the Club World Cup could’ve played a big part in not just Palmer’s lack of fitness, with Tosin Adarabioyo, Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill and Liam Delap all sidelined too.

“Chelsea were obviously involved in the Club World Cup, so they had very little of a pre-season,” continued Dinnery, “So this is his opportunity to just step back from the situation and rest for a few weeks.”

“Hopefully, that conservative approach will help him feel the benefit and he can return in mid-to-late October.”

A return in late October could see Palmer return for Sunderland’s visit to Stamford Bridge on 25th October, four days before Chelsea’s Carabao Cup round of 16 clash with Wolves.

Palmer would also be back for Chelsea’s busy November schedule, where they will play six games, including clashes with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Barcelona and Arsenal.

As it stands, Chelsea sit 8th in the Premier League table and seven points off the leaders Liverpool. The sooner Palmer can return to full fitness, the sooner Maresca’s side can start moving back in the right direction.

'Players from the streets' and 'a manager who knows how to win'

Former Premier League forward Wayne Rooney says Crystal Palace's recent successes are not only down to manager Oliver Glasner, but the club staying true to their values.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, Manchester United's record goalscorer said he has met Glasner on multiple occasions and describes him as a "genuine person".

"I don't think it's just down to him," Rooney said. "Over the past 10 years, Crystal Palace have recruited really well. They're bringing players in who are hungry, with desire, who've got something to gain and got something to look forward to and fight.

"They're bringing players from the streets. In the past 10 years, Palace remind me of a street football club. I don't think they've gone away from their values. I think that's really important and special.

"What they've got now is a manager who knows how to win, and knows how to win trophies. He's done it in different countries. He's done it in England now with the FA Cup.

"It's going to be very difficult for Palace to keep him."

U20 World Cup: France defeats South Africa in opening match

France U20

On Monday, the French team and South Africa faced off in their opening match of the U20 World Cup. Les Bleuets kicked off their campaign with a hard-fought victory.

In Chile this Monday, France needed to overcome South Africa to make a strong start to their U20 World Cup journey. With Elyaz Zidane, Lisandru Olmeta, Monaco’s Lucas Michal, and Marseille’s Tadjidine Mmadi in the starting lineup, Les Bleuets broke the deadlock early thanks to Lens midfielder Anthony Bermont (1-0, 25’).

After a VAR review just before halftime, the referee awarded a penalty to South Africa following a mistake by Elyaz Zidane in the box. Jody Ah Shene calmly converted from the spot to bring the South Africans level against Les Bleuets (1-1, 33’). Despite France’s sustained pressure, it wasn’t until the closing stages that Michal restored the lead for Les Tricolores (2-1, 81’). A crucial opening win for Bernard Diomùde’s men, who now turn their attention to the United States on Thursday.
