'Players from the streets' and 'a manager who knows how to win'

Former Premier League forward Wayne Rooney says Crystal Palace's recent successes are not only down to manager Oliver Glasner, but the club staying true to their values.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, Manchester United's record goalscorer said he has met Glasner on multiple occasions and describes him as a "genuine person".

"I don't think it's just down to him," Rooney said. "Over the past 10 years, Crystal Palace have recruited really well. They're bringing players in who are hungry, with desire, who've got something to gain and got something to look forward to and fight.

"They're bringing players from the streets. In the past 10 years, Palace remind me of a street football club. I don't think they've gone away from their values. I think that's really important and special.

"What they've got now is a manager who knows how to win, and knows how to win trophies. He's done it in different countries. He's done it in England now with the FA Cup.

"It's going to be very difficult for Palace to keep him."

U20 World Cup: France defeats South Africa in opening match

France U20

On Monday, the French team and South Africa faced off in their opening match of the U20 World Cup. Les Bleuets kicked off their campaign with a hard-fought victory.

In Chile this Monday, France needed to overcome South Africa to make a strong start to their U20 World Cup journey. With Elyaz Zidane, Lisandru Olmeta, Monaco’s Lucas Michal, and Marseille’s Tadjidine Mmadi in the starting lineup, Les Bleuets broke the deadlock early thanks to Lens midfielder Anthony Bermont (1-0, 25’).

After a VAR review just before halftime, the referee awarded a penalty to South Africa following a mistake by Elyaz Zidane in the box. Jody Ah Shene calmly converted from the spot to bring the South Africans level against Les Bleuets (1-1, 33’). Despite France’s sustained pressure, it wasn’t until the closing stages that Michal restored the lead for Les Tricolores (2-1, 81’). A crucial opening win for Bernard Diomède’s men, who now turn their attention to the United States on Thursday.

SAFA fined as ineligible Mokoena blunder 'costs' Bafana Bafana World Cup points

South Africa’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 Fifa World Cup have taken a major hit after Fifa sanctioned Safa for fielding an ineligible player.

The Fifa Disciplinary Committee ruled that midfielder Teboho Mokoena should not have featured in Bafana Bafana’s preliminary competition match against Lesotho in March 2025.

The decision found Safa in breach of article 19 of the Fifa Disciplinary Code and article 14 of the competition’s regulations. As a consequence, the match has been forfeited by South Africa, with FIFA awarding Lesotho a 3-0 victory.

The ruling significantly damages Bafana’s qualifying campaign, reducing their points tally and boosting their neighbours in Group C on the World Cup qualifying table.

In addition, Safa has been ordered to pay a fine of around R200 000, while Mokoena has been issued with a warning.

“The Fifa Disciplinary Committee has sanctioned Safa for having fielded an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, in the South Africa v Lesotho match played on 21 March 2025 in the Fifa World Cup 2026 preliminary competition,” FIFA said in a statement.

The disciplinary body confirmed that Safa and the parties involved have ten days to request a motivated decision, which would later be published on Fifa’s legal website.

The ruling remains subject to appeal before the Fifa Appeal Committee. The punishment has also shifted the balance in Group C of the World Cup Qualifiers.

Originally top with 17 points, South Africa now drops to 14 points after the forfeiture, drawing level with Benin. Nigeria sits close behind on 11 points after eight matches.

With only the group winners guaranteed a place in North America 2026, the setback could prove decisive in Bafana’s upcoming game against Zimbabwe and Rwanda.

McLaren's Norris 'nervous and excited' about title fight with Piastri

March 24 - Lando Norris is relishing the prospect of battling teammate Oscar Piastri for the Formula One drivers' title and says McLaren are ready for any tension that arises.

Pole-sitter Piastri led Norris in a McLaren one-two at the Chinese Grand Prix on Sunday, a week after Norris finished top in the season-opener in Australia.

Norris said his car did not have the pace to catch Piastri in Shanghai, and he ended up glad to finish second ahead of Mercedes' George Russell with fading brakes in the closing laps.

But the Briton expects closer battles with his Australian teammate as the season progresses.

"I think we're both excited - probably nervous and excited at the same time - as I'm sure the team will be," said Norris.

"But we're ready. We know that as much as we work together and we have a good time and enjoy ourselves, we both know we want to try and beat each other and show who's best.

"And that's inevitable. So there's no point trying to hide away from that fact or make something of it."

With 44 points from the first two rounds, Norris leads the race for the drivers' title ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka on April 6, eight points clear of Red Bull's defending champion Max Verstappen, who was fourth in China.

Norris remains the bookmakers' favourite to win the championship ahead of Piastri, who trails his teammate by 10 points after a costly slide at Albert Park saw him settle for ninth at his home Grand Prix.

While Verstappen won a fourth consecutive drivers' title last year, Norris and Piastri won six races between them to ensure McLaren took the constructors' championship.

As the McLaren drivers scrap for race wins, they will also need to help each other to ensure the team can stave off rivals scrambling to bridge the gap, said Norris.

"I think we both achieved something better this weekend because of that (help)," he added.

"And we'll continue to do that.

"Like Oscar said, at any point other teams can find something ... They can catch up quicker than you think, just like we did last year.

"We also have to think as a team and keep pushing the team forward from that side."

Germany waste three-goal lead but edge past Italy into Nations League semis

DORTMUND, Germany, March 23 - Germany squandered a three-goal lead to draw 3-3 against Italy on Sunday but still earned a nerve-racking 5-4 aggregate victory to set up a Nations League semi-final against Portugal in June.

The hosts scored three times, including one goal aided by a quick-thinking ballboy, in a dizzying first half where they dominated their continental rivals with a high-pressing and attacking game that left Italy no chance.

Not since their 2014 World Cup victory had Germany outclassed a major international side in such a way for an entire half, with 16 efforts towards goal. But they were nowhere to be seen after the break, taking their foot off the gas and conceding three goals before snatching a slim aggregate win.

"It was the best half, very impressive first half, incredibly aggressive and a deserved lead," said Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann.

"In the second half our lineup was a bit different. Then there are moments you concede a goal, then another and then the team that had not played together like that started feeling the pressure," he added.

"But what we learned from these two matches is important for our development."

INFLUENTIAL KIMMICH

The Germans, who won the first leg 2-1, shot out of the blocks and opened their account with Joshua Kimmich's 30th minute penalty.

Before the Italians had time to recover, Germany struck again, catching keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and the entire defence napping with a quickly taken Kimmich corner for unmarked Jamal Musiala to slot in their second in the 36th minute.

The Italians were still discussing among themselves when 15-year-old debutant ball boy Noel Urbaniack speedily threw the ball back for Kimmich to take the corner. The teenager was given a ball signed by the German team after the game.

Tim Kleindienst added a third on the stroke of halftime with a close-range header from yet another Kimmich assist and another defensive error by the visitors as the hosts looked to be cruising to a comfortable win.

It was Kimmich's fourth assist over the two legs but it would not be enough for victory with the Italians pouncing on a German mistake to hit back four minutes after the restart through Moise Kean.

With the Germans a shadow of their earlier selves, Kean then beat defender Jonathan Tah in the 69th minute to make it 3-2.

Italy drew on the night with Giacomo Raspadori's stoppage-time penalty but could not find another goal to level the tie on aggregate.

Arteta rues dropped points, Nwaneri injury as Arsenal held

BRIGHTON, England, 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 - Arsenal's costly 1-1 Premier League draw at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday was compounded by an injury to 17-year-old goal-scorer Ethan Nwaneri as coach Mikel Arteta blamed simple mistakes for his side dropping points.

Nwaneri did a superb job of replacing the injured Bukayo Saka on the right wing and scored in the 16th minute, but he had to be withdrawn at the interval before the Gunners conceded a penalty to drop two points in the title race.

Really bad news, because I think we've lost him (Nwaneri). We had to take him off at halftime with some muscular issues," Arteta told the BBC.

Nwaneri's departure coincided with Arsenal losing their way against a Brighton side that struggled to create chances, and the result left the Gunners second in the table, five points adrift of Liverpool who have two games in hand.

"In the second half, we didn't really grab the game or dominate enough to have certain moments and be more of a threat in their half, but defensively we did not concede much," Arteta said.

"Today was not about fatigue, it was about the simple things that we have to do in ball possession to give chances and dominate the game in the right areas," the Spaniard added.

Arteta described the decision to award a penalty to Brighton for a clash of heads between Joao Pedro and Arsenal defender William Saliba as bizarre.

"We are really disappointed with the decision that leads to the goal, because I have never seen something like this in my life. He (Saliba) touches the ball as well," Arteta said.

Palace hold Chelsea to 1-1 draw as Mateta strikes late

LONDON, Jan 4 (Reuters) - Crystal Palace equalised late to leave Chelsea winless in four Premier League games - and looking over their shoulder in the race for a Champions League slot - as Jean-Philippe Mateta cancelled out Cole Palmer's first-half opener.

Chelsea had chances to seal victory before Mateta picked up a ball from Eberechi Eze in the 82nd minute and blasted home from close range to ease Palace's relegation worries.

Palmer had given the visitors a deserved lead in the 14th minute when he fired in an angled shot after fine work on the left by winger Jadon Sancho who dummied his marker on the halfway line to sprint free and set up the England forward.

The draw left Chelsea in fourth place, only one point ahead of in-form Newcastle United who sit just outside the Champions League spots in fifth and won 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur earlier on Saturday.

Crystal Palace are 15th, six points ahead of Ipswich Town who are in the highest of the three relegation positions and travel to Fulham on Sunday.

After a first 45 minutes dominated by Chelsea, the hosts started the second half stronger with Eze going close from a cross by Ismaila Sarr in the 49th minute. Chris Richards forced Robert Sanchez into a reflex save seven minutes later.

Chelsea had their own chances when Enzo Fernandez and Nicolas Jackson both shot narrowly wide in the space of a minute before Mateta's equaliser.

The Blues had been aiming to get back to winning ways after losing to struggling Ipswich Town and west London neighbours Fulham and drawing 0-0 at Everton in their previous three matches, an abrupt loss of form that shattered talk of them mounting a title challenge.

Sancho said Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca had ordered his players to finish off the contest at halftime, something they failed to do with errant finishing.

"It's kind of frustrating to concede late in the game," the winger - who is on loan at Chelsea from Manchester United - told BBC radio. "We have to learn from this and move on. We have to finish our chances."

Chelsea must be more clinical, says Maresca

LONDON, - Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said his side must be more clinical after they conceded a late equaliser in a disappointing 1-1 Premier League draw at Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Cole Palmer gave Chelsea a deserved first-half lead, but he and Nicolas Jackson missed good chances as they failed to kill the game off before Jean-Philippe Mateta's late leveller for the hosts.

Chelsea have picked up just two points in a four-game winless run, leaving them nine points adrift of leaders Liverpool who have two games in hand -- and looking over their shoulders in a close race for the Champions League spots.

Maresca, who had repeatedly talked down Chelsea's title chances, was relatively pleased with a performance he thought should have earned his side all three points.

"Probably we did enough to win the game today," Maresca told reporters. "Between the first half and second half, I think we created chances enough to win the game.

"But in football you need to be clinical, otherwise the game is always open."

Maresca said he was encouraged by the number of chances Chelsea had created, as they also did in the 2-0 defeat at Ipswich Town on Monday.

"I always said that the important thing is to create chances, because if you create chances it means that you are doing the right things," he said.

"Sometimes you create and you score. Sometimes you create one chance and you score one. And sometimes you need to create 10 to score two."

Maresca was also full of praise for 18-year-old defender Joshua Acheampong, who looked assured on his first Premier League start.

"All the players for me, they were good today. But if I have to decide one, I think for sure Josh was our best player because of (his) age, because it was the first game (starting in the league).

"Josh, for me, can be a top player for this club. But he needs the right path, the right moment.

"With young players you have to decide in which moment and we decided today because we saw that he is ready. Today I think he showed how good he is."

Guardiola plays down 4-1 win over West Ham, saying squad needs improvement

MANCHESTER, England, 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 - While Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said he would sleep better after Saturday's 4-1 Premier League rout of West Ham United, he brushed off suggestions that his team were back to being the "old Manchester City".

Erling Haaland bagged his first double in a league game since September and Savinho set up three goals in City's victory that left them sixth in the table and two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

Though City won back-to-back games for the first time since October, Guardiola said it was not a sign that their slump was over.

"No, you judge the results," he told reporters after the crowd-pleasing win at Etihad Stadium. "We saw in many years our level. We are not at our level.

"Don't misunderstand me. I'm so happy. I will sleep better until the FA Cup (City host Salford City on Jan. 11). But you watched the games for years, we're not at the level, come on. Against Everton we played much better than today. And we draw, big crisis, disaster.

"Of course there are positives. If you ask me the team is playing like the years, of course not."

Often-injured Kevin De Bruyne played the full match, a positive sign just a day after Guardiola said the Belgian's fitness and form would be assessed before the club decides on a contract extension. De Bruyne's current deal expires in June.

The 33-year-old, who has scored two goals and provided his third assist of the season on Phil Foden's second-half goal on Saturday, shrugged off questions about his contract status after the win.

"I don't care," De Bruyne told the BBC. "I am just trying to get back to my level. I feel every week I am getting better. I can go for 90 minutes now. It has been an uncomfortable couple of months with the injury."

Guardiola gave Savinho a mixed review after he assisted on Haaland's goals and his deflected shot in the 10th minute led to an own goal by Vladimir Coufal. The Brazilian had scored his first goal in a City shirt in their 2-0 win over Leicester City only six days earlier.

"He's clean in his mind. He doesn't think nothing in his head in the past," the manager said. "Normally many years here, the players think they deserve something special for what they have done. Big mistake.

"(But) Savio has to do everything to win," Guardiola added. "Having a left foot in the left side, old-fashioned vintage football. Has a lot to improve, not aggressive enough without the ball, a little soft in many departments. Right now has something special for the team. I'm so happy for him and he deserves to play."

Napoli move top with 3-0 win at Fiorentina

FLORENCE, Italy, 🇮🇹 - Napoli went top of the Serie A standings thanks to a comfortable 3-0 win at Fiorentina on Saturday, the visitors facing few problems as they registered a fourth successive league victory.

With Napoli's main Scudetto rivals not in league action this weekend -- Atalanta and Inter Milan are both in Saudi Arabia for the Italian Super Cup -- Antonio Conte's side took full advantage.

Napoli are on 44 points, three ahead of Atalanta who have a game in hand, and Inter are a further point back, but with two fewer matches played. Fiorentina dropped to sixth on 32 points.

Mathias Olivera had the ball in the net for Napoli early on but the goal was ruled out for offside, while Leonardo Spinazzola drew a save from Fiorentina keeper David de Gea.

The visitors took the lead in the 29th minute when David Neres went on a mazy dribbling run into the area, going past three players before blasting a powerful shot into the roof of the net.

Fiorentina striker Moise Kean finally got his chance to shine, and found the net, but his goal was chalked off for a handball while controlling the ball and Napoli took their lead into the break.

Fiorentina manager Raffaele Palladino had given defender Matias Moreno his Serie A debut and the Argentine showed his inexperience when hauling down Andre Anguissa in the area.

Romelu Lukaku, who had a penalty saved in Napoli's last game, sent De Gea the wrong way with his low strike straight down the middle to give the visitors a two-goal cushion nine minutes after the interval.

Fiorentina had two chances in quick succession to pull back a goal, with Napoli keeper Alex Meret denying Rolando Mandragora and Amir Rrahmani blocking Lucas Beltran's goalbound shot from the rebound.

Another defensive error allowed Napoli in for a third goal, with Pietro Comuzzo's poor clearance of a cross from Anguissa falling to Scott McTominay who calmly stroked home his fourth league goal of the season in the 68th minute.

Fiorentina could find no way past a Napoli side with the best defensive record in Serie A and, after a run of eight successive league wins, Palladino's side have now gone four games without a win.

Arsenal frustrated in 1-1 draw at brave Brighton

BRIGHTON, England, 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 - An early goal from Arsenal teenager Ethan Nwaneri was cancelled out by a penalty from Joao Pedro as Brighton & Hove Albion held the misfiring Gunners to a 1-1 Premier League draw on Saturday that dented the visitors' title hopes.

Arsenal are second in the table on 40 points after 20 games, five behind leaders Liverpool, who host Manchester United on Sunday as one of their two matches in hand on their closest challengers. Brighton are 10th on 28 points.

Nwaneri scored 16 minutes into his second Premier League start, the 17-year-old breaking down the right and cutting inside before confidently drilling a low shot past Bart Verbruggen.

Nwaneri was booked in first-half stoppage time for taking too long over a corner at the end of a comfortable opening period for his side, but that all changed as Brighton came out flying after the interval.

They equalised in the 61st minute after Pedro was awarded a penalty following a clash of heads with William Saliba as he tried to turn in the box, with referee Anthony Taylor having no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Pedro stepped up and sent David Raya the wrong way to level and despite needing a win to keep the pressure on Liverpool, Arsenal continued to struggle.

The hosts should have claimed a winner in the 77th minute when Yankuba Mineh flashed the ball across the face of the goal but neither Yasin Ayari nor Kaoru Mitoma could steer it into the net.

The closest Arsenal came to scoring was a stoppage-time effort from former Brighton player Leandro Trossard that flew harmlessly over the crossbar as the hosts hung on for their fourth straight draw.

Inzaghi celebrates Cagliari victory as Martinez's goal drought ends

CAGLIARI, Italy, 🇮🇹 - Inter coach Simone Inzaghi reaffirmed his faith in striker Lautaro Martinez after he ended his goal drought in Saturday's 3-0 win over Cagliari that kept the Nerazzurri at the top of Serie A.

Inter's skipper had not scored for his club since Nov. 3 in a 1-0 win over Venezia.

But the Argentine got back on the scoresheet in the 71st minute on Saturday with a volley to put his team two up.

Inzaghi praised Martinez's resilience despite his recent struggles.

"Naturally, this situation was weighing on him, though we told him to relax and that he continued to give the team so much with his work.

Lautaro (Martinez) will never be a problem for Inter, only a resource," Inzaghi told DAZN streaming service.

Alessandro Bastoni's header and Hakan Calhanoglu's penalty sealed Inter's fifth consecutive away win. Inzaghi praised his side's hard work from set-pieces and the contributions of players such as Federico Dimarco, Calhanoglu and Kristjan Asllani.

"At the end of the first half, we congratulated the team on their performance and knew we just had to keep going against a tenacious Cagliari side," Inzaghi added.

The manager was upbeat as he set his sights on Inter's fourth consecutive Supercoppa title and a 21st Scudetto after lifting the title last season.

"This exciting 2024 ends with the 20th Scudetto that will forever unite us with the fans and directors, but now we go to Saudi Arabia for the Supercoppa hoping to win it for the fourth year in a row."

Inter are level in the league on 40 points with Atalanta, who play at Lazio later on Saturday.

The two sides will also meet in the semi-finals of the Supercoppa Italiana in Saudi Arabia on Jan. 2, with the winner advancing to face either Juventus or Milan.

"We know that we are Inter, we have objectives and it is only right to declare them. It takes a lot of sacrifice, January and February will have us playing constantly, but I am fortunate to have players ready to give their all, whether for 95 minutes or five, and that is important," Inzaghi added.
