HOME AFFAIRS WITHDRAWS ASYLUM INTAKE DIRECTIVE

The Department of Home Affairs has withdrawn its asylum intake directive after refugee reception offices were reportedly overwhelmed within days of its implementation.

According to the department, the situation placed officials at risk and raised serious public safety concerns.

The department also indicated that the directive had been issued without the knowledge of the Minister of Home Affairs.

A new approach to complying with the Constitutional Court’s order will now be developed.

SECOND SUSPECT ARRESTED IN ASSASSINATION OF EFF LEADER MONICA DUBE

PRETORIA — A second suspect has been arrested in connection with the assassination of EFF Tshwane Region 2 leader Monica Dube, who was gunned down at her home in Wallmannsthal, north of Pretoria, in June.

The 39-year-old suspect was arrested on Tuesday evening by the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) following an intelligence-driven investigation that allegedly linked him to the targeted killing.

He is expected to appear before the Cullinan Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, where he is expected to face a charge of murder.

Dube, 44, was shot and killed on 13 June 2026 in front of members of her family after armed men allegedly forced their way into her home.

The attackers reportedly ordered her children out of the room before opening fire on the EFF leader.

Dube had survived an earlier assassination attempt just months before her death. In March 2026, she was shot 11 times and spent weeks in intensive care before recovering.

The latest arrest follows the July arrest of 35-year-old Sipho Mahlangu, who was taken into custody three weeks after Dube’s murder.

Mahlangu faces charges of murder and robbery and remains in police custody after his bail application was postponed.

The latest development strengthens the investigation into the alleged network behind the targeted political killing, with investigators continuing to pursue other suspects who may have been involved.

Dube’s family and the EFF have previously called for all those responsible for her killing to be brought to justice.

The PKTT investigation remains ongoing.

FEMALE LEARNERS KICKED OUT OF SCHOOL OVER AFRO HAIR AT NKAMBAKO VILLAGE

NKAMBAKO – Several female learners were reportedly kicked out of Mahwahwa High School in Nkambako Village, Greater Tzaneen, after wearing their natural hair to school on Tuesday.

The learners claim that upon arriving at the school, Grade 8 to 10 learners were barred from entering the school premises by the school principal over their afro-textured and plaited hairstyles.

“Although our hair was neat, we were shocked when we were barred from attending lessons because educators deemed our hair ‘untidy’. We are frustrated because we are missing lessons, while matriculants are supposed to be preparing for their final examinations,” said the learners.

The learners claim that this is an isolated incident at the school and that they are unaware of a newly drafted hair policy.

A parent of one of the affected girls said there had been no prior engagement or communication with parents or guardians regarding hairstyles.

The school principal, Mr Khosa, and the School Governing Body (SGB) and the Limpopo Department of Education could not be reached for comment at the time of publication.

DEATH TOLL RISES TO SIX AS THREE POLICE OFFICERS, TWO AWAITING-TRIAL PRISONERS AND CIVILIAN KILLED IN R524 LEVUBU ROAD CRASH

MAKHADO – The death toll has risen to six following a fatal head-on collision involving a South African Police Service (SAPS) vehicle and a civilian vehicle along the R524 Levubu Road in the Vhembe District on Tuesday morning, 6 October 2026.

It is alleged that a SAPS vehicle from Tshilwavhusiku Police Station, which was transporting three awaiting-trial prisoners to a correctional facility in Thohoyandou, collided head-on with a white Mahindra bakkie belonging to Tshisimani Water.

Emergency Medical Services attended the scene and certified five people dead at the scene. The third SAPS member, who sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment, later succumbed to the injuries.

The six fatalities comprise three SAPS members — one male and two females — two awaiting-trial prisoners, both males, and the male driver of the civilian vehicle.

One awaiting-trial prisoner sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital under police guard.
A case of culpable homicide has been opened at Makhado Police Station. The circumstances surrounding the collision are being investigated.
Relevant SAPS units and senior management attended the scene.

The identities of the deceased are known but will not be released at this stage, pending the completion of the necessary procedures and notification of their next of kin.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Jan Petrus Scheepers, expressed his condolences to all the bereaved families and loved ones.

“We extend our sincere condolences to all the bereaved families, colleagues and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident. We also wish the injured a speedy recovery,” said Lieutenant General Scheepers.

Further developments will be communicated as the investigation progresses.
