Lucas Ribeiro shines as Orlando Pirates dominate at 2025 PSL Awards
Mamelodi Sundowns’ Brazilian star Lucas Ribeiro Costa stole the show at the 2024/25 Premier Soccer League (PSL) Awards, clinching four major accolades, while Orlando Pirates celebrated a strong haul in other Premiership categories.
The glittering ceremony, held on Tuesday night, honored the standout performers of South African football’s top flight.
Ribeiro, the 26-year-old attacking maestro, was the night’s biggest winner, securing the coveted PSL Footballer of the Season and Betway Premiership Players’ Player of the Season awards, voted by coaches and players respectively.
His sensational season, marked by 16 goals and nine assists in 26 appearances, also earned him the Premiership Goal of the Season and Top Goalscorer awards.
Ribeiro’s heroics, including a stunning strike against Borussia Dortmund at the FIFA Club World Cup, underscored his pivotal role in Sundowns’ eighth consecutive league title.
Orlando Pirates, despite finishing second in the Betway Premiership for the third straight season, proved their depth by sweeping four key categories.
Goalkeeper Sipho Chaine outshone Mamelodi Sundowns’ Ronwen Williams and Magesi FC’s Elvis Chipezeze to claim Goalkeeper of the Season, boasting 11 clean sheets in 25 matches.
Defender Nkosinathi Sibisi earned the Defender of the Season gong for his rock-solid performances, while Makhehlene Makhaula took home Midfielder of the Season.
Young star Relebohile Mofokeng, a standout at just 20 years old, won both the Young Player of the Season and MTN8 Last Man Standing awards for his dazzling displays, including key contributions in Pirates’ record third consecutive MTN8 triumph.
Mbekezeli Mbokazi added to Pirates’ tally, securing the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player of the Tournament award in his debut season.
Meanwhile, Sundowns’ Miguel Cardoso was named Coach of the Season for his record-breaking campaign, guiding the Brazilians.
