The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo has demanded an independent forensic audit into the Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone (MMSEZ).

The party says it has submitted a formal request to the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, calling for a full investigation into all operational and infrastructure expenditure under the Limpopo Economic Development Agency (LEDA) and MMSEZ (Pty) Ltd.

DA Limpopo Provincial Spokesperson on Economic Development, Environment, and Tourism, Jacques Smalle said the audit must include all tenders and contracts awarded, including their rationale, implementation, and management.

Tzaneen Dam Wall Project Completion Revised

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has announced a revised completion date for the raising of Tzaneen Dam Wall project, which was initially scheduled for March 2025.

In a statement on Wednesday, the department announced that the new target for the project completion is March 2026.

The Tzaneen Dam Wall Raising project, which is part of the Groot Letaba River Water Augmentation Project (GLeWaP), was resumed on 06 June 2023.

Limpopo Wastewater Plants in Critical Condition

Water and Sanitation Deputy Minister Sello Seitlholo has encouraged Mogalakwena Local Municipality to implement corrective measures to address the problem of dysfunctional wastewater treatment plants that largely contribute to the pollution of watercourses in the area.

Foot and Mouth Disease Contained in Limpopo

Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, has decided to lift the disease management areas (DMA) in Limpopo after intensified efforts by veterinary services were successful in containing the spread of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in the provinces.

The DMA has been in place since September 2022 to control an FMD outbreak in diptanks in the Vhembe Municipality.

Cattle at 34 diptanks were vaccinated in two rounds of vaccination, with a total of 23, 024 vaccinations done.

Fire Injures Six Initiates and Surgeon in Limpopo

A fire incident has left six initiates and a traditional surgeon injured at a private initiation school in Maake Village, outside Tzaneen.

According to the surgeon, who also serves as the principal of the school, the fire broke out around 23:00 on Tuesday, 01 July 2025. “We were awoken by a huge blaze,” he said.

The fire was eventually contained, but seven people sustained injuries.

Five initiates are currently in stable condition at Dr C N Phatudi Hospital, while one was transferred to Letaba Hospital for further treatment. The surgeon has since been discharged.

Life Imprisonment for Limpopo Farm Murder

The Polokwane High Court has sentenced three men to life imprisonment for a farm murder following a botched robbery.

The Polokwane High Court has convicted and sentenced Malesela Albert Mangena (35) of Mabotja Extension 45, Velly Segwale (35), and Lesiba Solly Segwale (45) of Mmotong Mokgokong village, to life imprisonment for murder.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the men were also sentenced to an additional 42 years’ imprisonment for multiple related offences.

Man Sentenced to Six Years for Fraudulently Roadworthy Certificate

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has welcomed the jail sentence imposed on a vehicle testing official from a privately owned testing station in Limpopo.

This as the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court sentenced Kabelo Chilenge (37) to six years direct imprisonment for fraudulently issuing a vehicle roadworthy certificate for a vehicle that he did not physically examine.

The court found that a suspended sentence would not be appropriate in these circumstances.
