MAN SENTENCED TO 25 YEARS FOR MURDER OF GERMAN TOURIST.

Mbombela, Mpumalanga – Joseph Napoleon Nyalunga (38) has been sentenced to 25 years’ direct imprisonment for the murder of German tourist Jorg Schnarr (67) by the High Court in Mbombela. Nyalunga was also convicted of attempted robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm, and ammunition. His two co-accused, Marshall Cebo Mamba and Bongumusa Matsane, were acquitted due to insufficient evidence.

The court heard that on 03 October 2022, Schnarr and companions were ambushed on the Numbi Road near Kruger National Park. Schnarr was shot while driving and died at the scene. Evidence included eyewitness testimony, police reports, and confession statements. Some sentences will run concurrently, resulting in an effective 25-year term.

KENNY KUNENE RETURNS TO JOBURG COUNCIL.

Patriotic Alliance (PA) Deputy President Kenny Kunene is back to the Johannesburg City Council, two months after his dramatic resignation.

Kunene was sworn in on Friday, 26 September 2025, by council Speaker Margaret Arnolds in Braamfontein, returning as an ordinary councillor. His comeback follows a forensic probe that cleared him of any wrongdoing after he was found at the home of murder-accused Katiso “KT” Molefe during a police raid.

The PA suspended Kunene and commissioned a law firm to investigate his presence at the house. This week, the report confirmed his account that he was there to facilitate a media interview, corroborated by witness statements and evidence.

Kunene had quit both as a councillor and as MMC for transport in July 2025. Former DA MP Liam Jacobs briefly replaced him but has now resigned to make way for Kunene and will shift focus to the Western Cape, where he is set to run as the PA’s mayoral candidate in the 2026 municipal elections.

PA leader Gayton McKenzie has openly campaigned for Kunene’s reinstatement as transport MMC, warning he would quit his cabinet post and pull out of the government of national unity if the demand was ignored.

Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero is expected to confirm Kunene’s appointment as MMC for transport in the coming days.

KZN NPA HEAD SLAMS DISBANDMENT OF POLITICAL KILLINGS TASK TEAM.

KwaZulu-Natal NPA head, Advocate Elaine Harrison, says she would have opposed the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) had she been consulted.

Testifying at the Madlanga Commission, Harrison warned that scrapping the specialised unit weakens the fight against politically motivated violence in the province.

The PKTT was formed in 2018 to tackle a wave of political assassinations in KZN but was recently dissolved, by suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, sparking criticism from opposition parties and civil society.

EKURHULENI COUNCIL REJECTS MOTION TO SUSPEND DEPUTY POLICE CHIEF JULIUS MKHWANAZI.

The Ekurhuleni City Council has voted against a motion, calling for the suspension of Deputy Metro Police Chief Julius Mkhwanazi, despite mounting allegations linking him to underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) tabled the motion during Thursday’s council sitting, arguing that Mkhwanazi’s continued presence in office posed a reputational risk to the City and undermined public confidence in the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD).

But the motion was defeated after the ruling coalition and its allies closed ranks, insisting that only the City Manager has the authority to act on the matter.

Mkhwanazi is facing scrutiny following testimony at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi alleged that he facilitated the registration of private vehicles under the municipality and equipped them with blue lights for Matlala’s use.

Although Mkhwanazi has denied wrongdoing and volunteered to testify before the Commission, the controversy has sparked calls for decisive action. Earlier this week, he was granted special leave pending investigations, but opposition parties maintain that suspension was the most appropriate precaution.

The municipality has launched an internal probe into the allegations, while Mkhwanazi insists he is determined to clear his name.

DA WANTS EKURHULENI'S JULIUS MKHWANAZI SUSPENDED.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the City of Ekurhuleni has called for the immediate suspension of the Director of Special Services, for Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department, Julius Mkhwanazi. The party says Mkhwanazi faces serious allegations of misconduct and abuse of power, which warrant that he step aside while investigations are under way.

According to the DA, allowing him to remain in office could compromise the probe and undermine public confidence in the metro police. The party has urged the municipality to act swiftly in the interest of accountability and clean governance.
