📌Version 2 – Clarification & Continued Discussion (Please read)

We sent this message out earlier while fully aware that we could be boycotted for speaking out, but we believe this is a conversation that needs to happen for the benefit of the local music community.

We are not making this post to benefit our own band in any way, but rather to stand up, speak out, and advocate for what we believe is fairness in our local music scene.

We would also like to address that we have been attacked by some individuals, with comments telling us to “leave the festival alone.” This has been disappointing, as it appears that some people have not fully read or understood our message. We would like to make it very clear that we support the festival and are not trying to harm it in any way. Our intention is to support fairness within the local music community, not to create division.

We would also like to clarify misinformation being spread about our band. We perform in both Afrikaans and English, and our music includes original songs as well as covers that audiences of all backgrounds enjoy. We have also released the “South Coast Ride” song with the intention of bringing the local community closer together through music, not to divide it.

We are writing to express a concern regarding the selection of local artists for the upcoming Oppikus Festival in Uvongo, KZN. We understand that the festival is organised by the Round Table group, which appears to consist of approximately eight or more members.

We are also well aware that Oppikus is not only an Afrikaans festival, as it has previously featured both English and Afrikaans bands, including artists who perform in both languages.

We would also like to make it clear that we are not trying to take main stage opportunities away from national artists. Our concern is focused only on the local community and the early time slots traditionally given to local opening acts.

It has become noticeable that the same local artists are selected year after year, particularly for the early time slots, which traditionally serve as the opening acts for the main national performances. As local musicians, we are not asking to headline the event — we are simply asking that these limited local opening slots be chosen fairly and transparently.

At present, we feel it is insulting that the same few names are repeatedly chosen without any clear process, while other capable and hardworking local musicians are never given the opportunity. This raises fair questions such as:
What makes these artists more deserving than others?
And how are these decisions actually being made?

There have also been instances where artists with little or no stage experience have been selected, which has raised further questions about how the selection process works.

It also appears that public input was only requested for national artists, who were already pre-selected, while local South Coast artists were not given the same opportunity to be supported or voted for. This creates the impression that local selections may be influenced by personal preference rather than fair and equal opportunity.

We respectfully request that local artists from the South Coast be given an equal chance to be considered, either through a public voting system, an open application process, or a transparent nomination process. Alternatively, we ask for clear communication on whether the current system is based on personal choice.

At present, we feel as though the event is closed off and that no open call was made for local artists to apply or be considered.

These concerns are raised respectfully and in the spirit of fairness, transparency, and genuine support for both the festival and the local creative community.

Thank you for reading♥️
