R1,000 Grocery Budget No Longer Enough for Basic Household Needs..
Rising food prices are forcing households to rethink how they spend their grocery budgets. With R1,000 no longer stretching as far as before, shoppers are prioritising essentials, switching brands, buying smaller quantities and searching for promotions. Basic items such as maize meal, cooking oil, eggs, rice and sugar are increasingly requiring careful planning as families try to make limited budgets last longer.
These changes are also being felt by retailers, with Percy Musekwa, a floor manager at SPAR in Soshanguve Block FF, saying the rising cost of food is making business increasingly difficult.
โBusiness is a bit tough. R1, 000 no longer buys the basics unless there are promotions,โ Musekwa said.
He said promotions, including combinations of basic items such as rice, cooking oil and sugar, can cost around R400, showing how quickly a limited grocery budget can be used up.
