THE DIFFERENT PROFILES OF AN ATTACKING MIDFIELDER!!
[Photo:1 THE ATTACKING MIDFIELDER] The traditional role of the AM describes one player who has the freedom to operate between opposition lines. They are the teams main creative outlet and should move laterally to support nearby attacking players. The AM is responsible for receiving the Ball between opposition lines and releasing the team's attacking players beyond the opposition's defensive line.

[Photo:2 THE MEZZALA] The MEZZALA is the most common profile of the attacking Midfielder seen in the modern game. With the increased use and importance of the half-spaces, the MEZZALA is an AM who will operate within the area. The MEZZALA is responsible for receiving the ball in the half space and attempting to pe*****te the opposition's defensive line. They will also connect the wide area with the central channel.

[Photo:3 WIDE ATTACKING MIDFIELDER] The wide attacking Midfielder is almost a combination of an attacking Midfielder and a winger. Their traits will typically favour that of an attacking Midfielder but they will have traits that allow them to effectively operate within the wide areas. The player is typically found in formations such as the 4-2-2-2 and will aid Central progression from the half-spaces and move wide to provide a route around the opponent.

WHAT IS LIBERO?? Vs. THE MODERN LIBERO
[Photo:1 THE LIBERO] The LIBERO describes the role of a CB who is typically found in a back 3 and will be responsible for protecting the Space behind the defensive line effectively operating as a Sweeper. The more traditional role of the LIBERO is a defensive one. During the origin of the role, most attacking strategies involved a more direct approach and using two strikers.

[Photo:2 THE MODERN LIBERO] As the Modern game developed the need for the LIBERO to be a solely defensive role become insufficient. Therefore, the role developed into a more attacking one with the LIBERO effectively acting as the team's quarterback. Acting as the quarterback the LIBERO is responsible for beginning and dictating the team's attack. As a Passing Specialist, the LIBERO will be required to play more complex passes over the opposition's block.

[Photo:3 MOVING INTO MIDFIELD ] The modern LIBERO has become a much more complete role and along with acting as the quarterback for the team's attack. It's also common for the CB to step into Midfield to create a double pivot and allow the team to overload the opponent Centrally. The ball carrying CB travels beyond the opposition's forward line to form the double pivot. It's important for the defensive line to maintain the structure's balance as the CB steps forward.

Playing out from the Back 4-2-3-1 Vs. 4-3-3!! [ Initial Organisation]
[Photo:1] The CF should remain high "pinning" the 2 CB's and preventing them from being involved in the press. The AM and CF should begin close in case the Ball needs to be played long. The 2 Wingers should begin high preventing the defending FB's moving forward. The 2 CM's should be staggered and positioned behind and between the opposition's forward pressing line. The 2 FB's should begin slightly deeper. This Allows the 2 player's to receive the Ball facing forward. NB: The 4-2 structure provides the foundations for the team to begin playing out from the Back.

[Photo:2 Exit Routes] Moving around the opponent's press can be a viable option. It's important to consider that the pressing team will often target the FB and attempt to isolate them from nearby support. As the shortest distance between the two goals. The most optimal route will always be Centrally.

[Photo:3 Beginning the attack ] The double pivot should remain behind and between the opposition's forward pressing line. If the CB takes the goal kick, the Pressing striker cannot cut the pitch in half and force the attacking team towards a specific side of the pitch. The free CB should begin moving wide as the Ball travel towards the GK.

[Photo:4 Ball with the Center Back] Once the attacking team commits to a side, the striker will begin to press and prevent a switch. Therefore, nearby players must provide support. The ball side FB should provide a passing option for the CB. The CM on the same side should provide an exit route centrally. If the CM receives the Ball, the FB should move forward to receive the Ball.

[Photo:5 The ball moves wide] with the ball moving to the FB. It's crucial to maintain a clear support network. The ball side center Back should provide support behind the ball to potentially initiate a switch. The Ball Side winger should provide a route forward and beyond the opposition's press.

WHAT IS PINNING?? & PINNING WITH A SINGLE STRIKER
[Photo:1] The term " pinning " is used to describe how an attacker player positions themselves. Usually Infront of the defender to restrict their movement. NB: pinning can allow a team to create Exploitable Space, isolate defenders or create numerical superiority. With the 2 CB's pinned, the FB is without support against the attacking winger

[Photo:2] A single striker can and will pin both CB, but this does present the defending team with the opportunity to have one of the 2 player's "Jump " onto an attacker as they receive the Ball. NB: with the 2 CB's pinned, the box Midfield and resulting overload is perfect for progressing Centrally

[Photo:1] The prime target area or often referred to as the corridor of uncertainty describe an area that an attacking player should be aiming any Cross. This is a central area is behind the opposition's defensive line. Importantly, this area is far enough away from the goalkeeper so that they can't simply come and catch the Ball.

[Photo:2] Different Crosses and area (Cut back, Half-space, Out-Swinging cross, In-Swinging cross [Cross from Deep], Across the Face of Goal.)

[Photo:3] Key locations in the area (Scoring from a cross can be, but not always, a low percentage option therefore it's important for a team to maximize their coverage of the opponent's area. Attacking players should cover the four key locations in an around the area. These area: the front post, back post, the penalty spot and the edge of the area).

TRADITIONAL FULLBACK Vs. INVERTED FULLBACK , DEFENSIVE FULLBACK.
[Photo:1] The more traditional role of a Fullback involves moving forward to support the winger. A common movements involves the winger moving infield and the Fullback overlapping to receive the Ball beyond the opposition's defensive line. NB: a traditional Fullback is often paired with an inside forward who will move into the half-space.

[Photo:2] The inverting Fullback describes the act of a Player moving infield typically into the line two. This generally occurs to formations with a single pivot, allowing the team to use double pivot during crucial stages. NB: with the Fullback inverting, additional passing angles and exit routes are created, allowing the team to progress centrally.

[Photo:3] Both Fullbacks will have different profiles and roles to maintain balance within the team. The defensive Fullback will typically be closer in profile to that of a CB. Their role is to move into the commonly used back three to provide defensive stability. Allowing the other Fullback to either invert in line two or move forward to the winger.

THE DIFFERENT WINGERS{ the use of inverted forward and a traditional Fullback }.
[Photo:1] An inverted forward describes the role of a winger who moves into and operates from within the half-spaces rather than the wide area. (A)An inverted forward is typically paired with a more traditional FB. This Allows the maximum structural width to be maintained as the winger moves infield. (B) A touchline winger will remain wide and is typically paired with an inverting FB.

[Photo:2] (A)The winger should time their arrival into the half-space to receive the Ball Infront of the defending FB. (B)The overlapping FB poses a challenge to the defending player which can create additional space for the inside forward. (C)the timing of the pass is critical. It's important for the passing player to draw nearby pressure before realizing the Ball. This will create additional space for the inside forward.

[Photo:3] (A)The inside forward can dribble into the box to then shoot or cross. (B)A common action involves receiving the Ball before shooting from within the half-space. (C)From within the half-spaces the inside forward can combine further before entering the area.

The TRADITIONAL STRIKER Vs. THE FALSE NINE.
[Photo:1] The more traditional role of the striker involves remaining Centrally before attempting to exploit the Space behind the opponent's Defensive Line. The Striker will remain Centrally "Pinning" the opposition Centre Backs. [Photo:2&3] Compared to the traditional striker, the role of a false nine is to move between opposition lines in an attempt to Combine with nearby teammates. The striker will begin "pinning" the two centre backs before timing their movement into the space between opposing lines.

[Photo;1,2,3&4] The 433 is nowadays one of the most common formations. As with every other formation however, the 433 needs to be adjusted depending on the types of players your team has. Three common variations are 1) Traditional Wingers 2) Inverted Wingers and a variation of the Inverted Wingers which we will, in this post call 3) Inverted Wingers + False 9.

NB: The main differences lie in the players who occupy the half spaces. In the case that the Central Midfield players occupy the Half-Spaces, it makes sense for the FBs to play inverted to cover the spaces that the CMs have left open.

[photo:4] The third variation Inverted Wingers + False 9 is something that Liverpool used to play with Firmino taking on the False9 role. This is an effective way for the False9 to draw opposition CBs out of position and create spaces for the outside FWs to run into. At the same time the False 9 can also provide midfield support. This variation looks similar to a 442 diamond formation and is one example of how a starting formation is only that on paper and almost always moulds into a different shape, depending on team strategy.

Can you think of other variations that can be played with this formation?

Escaping the Aggressive 433 Press.
[Photo:1] The 433 is an effective formation that allows for an aggressive forward press. However, this pressing strategy of course also has its weaknesses. Despite pressuring using a cover shadow, the FBs are generally left unmarked and with space in front of them.
This means that if the ball is somehow played there there are spaces to exploit. We have broken this down into 3 possible solutions.

[Photo:2] 1. Long Ball out wide - This allows for a 2v1 situation on the wing. However long balls are difficult to control thus do not always create an advantageous situation.

[Photo:3] 2. FB dropping back to assist in the build up - This is sometimes necessary if the CB on the ball needs an immediate outlet. However this often allows for the opposition to continue their high press.

[Photo:4] 3. 3rd man runner/wall pass - If you have players with high technical abilities this is possibly the best solution since the ball can always be played faster than opposition players can react. This would leave the FB with potentially more space than in the other two variations.

Which do you prefer and can you think of other possible solutions?

NB:[Photo:1] The central attackers no.9(CF) and no.10(CAM) are unique in the 4231 formation because of their vertical alignment. [Photo:2] If the CF is able pin the two CBs by making movements in between and in behind them, [Photo:3&4] the AM will have opportunities to create temporary overloads on one side before the other CB has time to cover. Of course the opposition CBs will need to and most likely shift over. However creating these overload situations should still be the goal even if it is only for a moment since that is generally all a good attacking player needs to create goal scoring chances. This is why split second decisions and the technical proficiency to execute in that exact moment are important. Even if the CBs shift in time, 1v1 situations in the final attacking third are still advantageous situations for the attackers. Some teams may play a formation with more midfield or defending players but this will allow for numerical superiorities at the back which means a more stable build up.

07/11/2025

NB:In a 4231 the double pivot allows for close combinations. One way to utilise the close support is to confuse the opposition through rotations. [Photo:1] The Fullback can vary these rotations generally through two options as an 1)Offensive FB and 2) Inverted FB. [Photo:2,3&4] The Offensive FB allows for rotations where the wide midfielder pushes inside to cause central attacking threat. This generally forces the opposition FB to also shift inside and gives space for the Offensive FB to exploit further up the pitch. The CM in this situation can also drop in to provide immediate passing options in the space that the Offensive FB has left. [Photo:5,6&7] The inverted FB is the more unorthodox variation. By shifting inside the LB is able to help create midfield overloads. If the opposition wide RW decides to also shift inside, spaces open up for a direct pass straight into the feet of the wide RW player (blue).
