Die SA Weermagvereniging (SAWV) is gestig op 14 Februarie 2009 in belang van alle oud-lede wat diens gelewer het tydens die bestaan van die Unie Verdedigings Mag in 1946 tot aan die einde van die bestaan van die SA Weermag in 1994 asook lede van die SANW na 1994 . Dit sluit in alle lede wat gedien het as dienspligtiges, in die Kommandos, in die Reserwe Mag en in die Staande Mag. Lede in uniform so

wel as burgerlikes wat gedien het in die SA Leer, SA Lugmag, SA Vloot en SA Geneeskundige Dienste, sowel as lede van die SWAGM (Suid Wes Afrikaanse Gebiedsmag) kwalifiseer om aan te sluit as vol lede van die SAWV

* Lede van die SA Polisie en SA Gevangenis Diens is ook geregtig om as Ondersteunende lede van die SAWV aan te sluit.

* Persone wat nie in Uniform gedien het nie word ook uitgenooi om as Ondersteunende lede van die SAWV aan te sluit. Die SAWV onderneem, soos uiteengesit in ons Grondwet, om onder andere:

~ in belang van al ons lede op te tree en om die belange van ons lede binne en buite die Vereniging te bevorder.

~ sigbare en tasbare erkenning te verleen.

~ die kameraderie tussen al ons lede te hernu en te bevorder.

~ die geestelike en materiele belange van ons lede te beskerm.

~ doeltreffende skakeling en kommunikasie op alle vlakke tussen alle lede te skep. Die Vereniging word bestuur deur ons Nasionale Uitvoerende Raad (NUR) wat jaarliks by die Algehele Jaarvergadering
( AJV) verkies word. Sluit aan by die SAWV, word deel van 'n SAWV Eenheid in jou dorp en werk aan verskeie gemeenskapsprojekte om van jou omgewing 'n beter plek te maak.

Who are we? The South African Defence Force Association (SADFA) was founded on 14 February 2009 to act in the interest of all old members who rendered a service during the existence of the Union Defence Force (UDF) in 1964 and the of the existence of the SA Defence Force (SADF) in 1994 and the SANDF after 1994. This includes members who served as National Servicemen, in the Commandos, in the Reserve Force and the Permanent Force. Members in uniform as well as civilians who served in the SA Army, SA Air Force, SA Navy and the SA Health Service and also members of the former SWATF ( South West Africa Territorial Force) qualify to join as Full Members

* Members that served in the SA Police and SA Prison Service before are also eligible to join as Supportive members of SADFA.

* Members that did not serve in Uniform are also invited to join
SADFA as Supportive Members. As set out in our Constitution, SADFA undertakes among st other things:

~ to act in the interest of all our members and to promote the interests of our members within and outside of the Association.

~ to bestow tangible and visible acknowledgement.

~ to renew and promote the comradeship among st our members.

~ to defend the spiritual and material interests of our members.

~ to create effective communication on all levels between members. The Association is managed by our National Executive Council (NEC) which is elected at the Annual General Meeting (AGM). Join the SADFA, be part of a SADFA Unit in your area and work on different projects to make your community a better place.

Happy US / Allied POWs after being liberated at the Hanowa POW Camp number six in Honshu, Japan - September 1945

An estimated 32,000 to 36,000 Allied POWs were being held in Japan when the surrender was signed.
Nearly 3,500 had died before the war ended.

While a majority were released in the immediate days after the surrender, some remained imprisoned as late as September 15, 1945.

On July 22, 1966, an engineer sat in the open cockpit of an English Electric Lightning for a routine ground test. Twelve minutes later, he landed it.

Imagine sitting behind the controls of a Mach 2 interceptor with no helmet, no radio, an disarmed ejection seat, and zero jet flying experience.

That was Walter "Taffy" Holden’s reality on July 22, 1966.

Holden, a 39-year-old RAF engineering officer, was just trying to solve a stubborn electrical fault on an English Electric Lightning F.1 at RAF Lyneham. The glitch only appeared under full takeoff power. With no test pilot on hand, Holden decided to run the ground engine test himself.

The plan was simple: throttle up on the tarmac, cut power, brake, and repeat. No actual flying required.

Except on one run, Holden pushed the throttles past the detent and engaged full afterburner.

Before he could disengage the massive thrust, the jet was screaming down the runway past the point of no return. Straight ahead sat a fuel tanker crossing the tarmac, a civilian aircraft taking off to his left, and a village just beyond the airfield boundary.

Stopping was impossible. Holden made the only choice left: he pulled back on the stick.

With the wind roaring past an open canopy, a non-pilot was suddenly flying one of the most powerful aircraft on earth.

For 12 terrifying minutes, Holden figured out the controls on the fly:

Attempt 1: Came in too fast to land. Aborted.

Attempt 2: Wrong angle on the glide slope. Aborted.

Attempt 3: He touched down, slammed on the brakes, and brought the jet to a stop just short of disaster.

Once the dust settled, Holden climbed out of the cockpit and went right back to his engineering duties.

The jet - XM135 - was repaired, returned to active service, and now rests at the Imperial War Museum at Duxford. Inside its cockpit, a small plaque marks the day a non-pilot accidentally took flight and lived to tell the tale.

On 11 September 2026, let us pause for a minute to remember the following young men from our Generation who answered the Final Roll Call.

11 Sep 1974: 05128004E Warrant Officer Class II Olaf Volmer Jensen from 2 SAI Died of Wounds at the hospital at Walvis Bay after sustaining multiple shrapnel wounds in an accidental hand gr***de explosion. He was 44.

11 Sep 1977: 76927011SP Rifleman Rodriques Pedro from 32 Battalion was accidentally killed in an anti-personnel landmine explosion while assisting to lay a minefield during an operation in Southern Angola. He was 32.

11 Sep 1977: 63166268KT Corporal Albertus Petrus van Zyl from the Tygerberg Commando was Killed in Action when his Buffel Troop Carrier detonated a landmine near Oshigambo. He was 31.

11 Sep 1983: 72232945BG 2/Lieutenant Deon De Villiers from 3 Medical Battalion Group was killed in a military vehicle accident in Bloemfontein. He was 26.

Psalm 56:4 “Die dag as ek bang word, vertrou ek net op U.”

Ons almal is soms bang. Miskien is jy bang vir hoogte of donkerte. Dalk vir eensaamheid of siekte of dalk selfs vir die dood.

Ons mag egter nie dat vrees ons lewens oorheers nie. Ons moet op die Here vertrou wat nie vir ons ’n gees van vrees gegee het nie maar van krag, liefde en standvastigheid.

Aanvaar opnuut God se liefde en vertrou Hom. Weier om vir enigiets bang te wees. Staan enige vorm van vrees, in die naam van die Here, teen.

Gebed:
Vader, help ons asseblief om vir niks bang te wees nie. In Jesus Naam. Amen
