3 SASSA OFFICIALS ARRESTED

The Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) chairperson Songezo Zibi has commended both the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and the police following the arrest of three SASSA officials.

They were arrested at the Social Security Agency offices in Johannesburg. They are allegedly linked to more than R260 million stolen from beneficiaries through ghost SASSA cards.

Police are still searching for four others.

Zibi hopes this will send a strong message to those stealing from the poor and defrauding the state.

“We see many of these instances where people take advantage of the transfers that South African taxpayers provide to the people who are less fortunate. They take advantage of the system in order to steal. To advantage themselves, relatives, and their friends. And I hope justice takes its course as quickly as possible. And that those still on the run will soon be arrested and taken to court,” adds Zibi.

SEAN "DIDDY" COMBS

Sean “Diddy” Combs pleaded not guilty on Friday to a new indictment, which added accusations that the hip-hop mogul forced employees to work long hours and threatened to punish those who did not assist in his two-decade s*x trafficking scheme.

Combs (55) entered his plea to the new indictment before US District Judge Arun Subramanian at a hearing in Manhattan federal court. A trial remains scheduled for May 5.

Combs previously pleaded not guilty to charges of racketeering conspiracy, s*x trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution.

While the new indictment added no new charges, it described what prosecutors called the “forced labor” that Combs demanded in connection with the 20-year alleged racketeering conspiracy.

It said Combs and his associates “maintained control” over some employees by forcing them to work long hours with little sleep, through the use of or threats to use physical force, financial harm, psychological harm and reputational harm.

Combs’ defense lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, has said his client never forced anyone to engage in s*xual acts against their will.

Prosecutors with the Manhattan US Attorney’s Office said Combs used his business empire, including his record label Bad Boy Entertainment, to s*xually abuse women between 2004 and 2024.

Combs’ alleged abuse included having women take part in recorded s*xual performances called “freak offs” with male s*x workers, who were sometimes transported across state lines.

Agnifilo has said the freak offs were consensual s*xual activity.

Combs also faces dozens of civil lawsuits by women and men who accused him of s*xual assault and other misconduct. He has denied all wrongdoing.

Friday’s hearing is also expected to discuss jury selection, including the potential difficulty in finding an impartial jury given Combs’ fame and the substantial media coverage of his criminal case.

Prosecutors want jury selection to begin on April 21, to help ensure the trial does not run past the July 4 holiday. Defense lawyers want jury selection to begin on May 5, saying an earlier date would be unfair to them.

Combs has been held in a Brooklyn jail awaiting trial since his September 2024 arrest.

Also known during his career as Puff Daddy and P. Diddy, Combs founded Bad Boy Records and is credited with helping turn rappers and R&B singers such as Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans, Notorious B.I.G. and Usher into stars in the 1990s and 2000s.

His career has been derailed since federal agents raided his Los Angeles and Miami Beach, Florida, homes in early 2024 as part of the s*x trafficking investigation that led to his indictment.

KELLY SMITH

At least two state witnesses have described Kelly Smith as a good mother to her children.

This as the trial into the disappearance of Joshlin Smith enters its second week.

A detective from the police’s FCS Unit, a neighbour of Kelly Smith, and a woman who wanted to adopt Joshlin Smith were among the state witnesses called in the Western Cape High Court sitting in Saldanha.

Smith, her boyfriend Jacquin Appollis and Steveno van Rhyn are facing charges of kidnapping and human trafficking.

She broke down in tears as she became overwhelmed with emotion when a state witnesses described her as being a good mother to her children.

Carlin Zeegers, a woman for whom Kelly worked as a domestic worker from time to time told the court that Kelly came to her every day for help due to her circumstances.

Zeegers would give Kelly and her children food and paid her when she helped with housework.

“Kelly has very lovable children and she raised her children very well. I felt sorry for her and I saw what she was going through, I’m a mother too. In her weakness she was a good mother to her children. I’m so sorry I can’t say what happened [to Joshlin] but that’s all that I know and I just reached out to them.”

Natasha Andrews, who knew Kelly for about twenty years and who had wanted to adopt Joshlin has testified that Kelly had a good relationship with her children and was a good mother to them.

She earlier testified she had wanted to adopt Joshlin because her circumstances were better than Kelly’s.

Andrews told the court how Kelly came to her house on the evening of the child’s disappearance to look for her.

“Kelly came back in the early hours of the morning of the 20th of February just before 1am, to fetch a photo of Joshlin. The evening of the 19th there was load shedding from 10pm until about midnight.”

A witness who cannot be named has testified about how she helped Kelly look for Joshlin on the night she disappeared.

She says Kelly was crying while they were en route to Diazville, to Andrews’ home to look for the child, but was not crying when they got back to continue searching in Middelpos.

The trial continues on Tuesday.

Three fallen soldiers from Free State who perished in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have been commended for sacrifices they made for the country.

A memorial service of the three soldiers was held at Tempe Military Base in Bloemfontein. Families and friends say they will remember them for their commitment and sacrifices.

Staff Sergeant Ishmael Molahlehi, Riflemen Mokete Mobe and Tshidiso Mabele were three of the 14 SANDF soldiers killed in the conflict-ridden Democratic Republic of Congo.

Colonel Henry Gordon says the army has lost dedicated soldiers.

“It was not easy but at the end of the day as I have indicated, I encourage them, they need to pick up their spears in order to move forward in order to continue, in order to ensure that we serve as patriotic citizens specifically to ensure that we protect the territorial integrity of the country.”

The case against the six men accused of the murder of Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs has been transferred to the High Court in Johannesburg.

The suspects are expected to appear on the 7th of next month.

Fleurs was fatally shot in April last year during a hijacking at a petrol station in Florida, west of Johannesburg, while waiting for service at a petrol station.

The six accused were arrested in Slovoville, Soweto, a few days later for their alleged involvement in soccer star’s murder.

The families of the accused have expressed relief that the matter has now been moved to the High Court, stating that there is finally direction and progress in the case as they believe those incarcerated have no hand in the murder of the Kaizer Chiefs’ player.

The case will be heard at the High Court on the 7th of next month for pretrial.

Four more South African soldiers have been killed in Goma, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), bringing the total number of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members killed in the region to 13 in less than a week.

Last Friday, nine South African soldiers died during intense fighting with M23 rebels, who claim to have taken control of Goma.

Meanwhile, the SANDF has since met with the families of the soldiers killed last week.

SANDF spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini says the timeline for repatriating the soldiers’ remains is unclear.

Dlamini says, “What we have done since the loss of lives is dispatch our chaplains, general personnel, social workers, and psychologists to visit the families, inform them, and provide support in whichever way, including spiritually. We are now waiting to ensure that the remains of our members are prepared in Goma and repatriated back to South Africa. I am not in a position to tell you when exactly they will be repatriated.”
