At the entrance of a clinic in Mexico, there's a sign that clearly says: NO ANIMALS ALLOWED.
For the past three months, the receptionist, Doรฑa Esperanza, has kept that rule tucked away beneath her desk.
One rainy day, a skinny, trembling stray dog wandered into the waiting room looking for shelter. Some people wanted to send him back outside, but Doรฑa Esperanza said no. It was pouring, and he needed a safe place.
That afternoon, she shared her lunch with him.
The next day, he came back.
And the day after that.
Eventually, he stayed.
The clinic's rules are clearโanimals aren't allowed inside for health reasons. But Doรฑa Esperanza made him a small space under her desk where he wouldn't bother anyone and could rest quietly throughout the day.
When supervisors visit, the dog knows exactly how to stay still and out of sight. Doรฑa Esperanza jokes that he's more well-behaved than many patients.
She named him Suero ("IV Drip"), after the clinic where he found a home.
Now, patients ask about him when they arrive and often bring him treats.
The sign is still hanging on the wall.

Sometimes, kindness matters more than rules.
