These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him.” — Proverbs 6:16 NKJV
There are things the Bible says God hates.
That may sound uncomfortable, but this passage is actually an invitation to examine our hearts. God loves us, but He does not approve of everything we do.
Let’s look at the seven things mentioned in Proverbs 6:17–19.
1. A PROUD LOOK
God hates pride.
Pride says, “I don’t need God. I know better. I am better than others.”
But Scripture reminds us that God resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.
Sometimes pride doesn’t look like boasting. It can appear as refusing correction, never admitting when we are wrong, or looking down on others.
Ask yourself: Am I humble enough to admit when I am wrong?
2. A LYING TONGUE
God hates dishonesty.
A lie may seem small to us, but our words reveal what is happening in our hearts.
As Christians, our words should be trustworthy. We should not manipulate people, deceive people, or create false stories to protect ourselves.
Can people trust what comes out of my mouth?
3. HANDS THAT SHED INNOCENT BLOOD
God values human life.
This reminds us that God takes violence, murder, cruelty, and the destruction of innocent lives seriously.
We should never allow hatred to grow in our hearts until it produces destructive actions.
4. A HEART THAT DEVISES WICKED PLANS
This one goes deeper.
God is not only concerned about what we eventually do. He also cares about what we deliberately plan in our hearts.
You may smile at someone while secretly planning to hurt them, destroy their reputation, deceive them, or take advantage of them.
God sees beyond our appearance.

5. FEET THAT ARE QUICK TO RUN TO EVIL
Some people don’t need to be pushed into trouble—they run toward it.
They are quick to participate in gossip, revenge, immorality, arguments, hatred, or sinful behaviour.
As believers, we should not be eager to run toward what God has told us to avoid.
What do your feet keep taking you toward?
6. A FALSE WITNESS WHO SPEAKS LIES
This is different from simply lying.
A false witness can deliberately give false information about another person, damaging their reputation or bringing trouble into their life.
Before repeating something about someone, ask:
“Is it true?”“Is it necessary?”“Will this honour God?”
Not everything you hear deserves to be repeated.
7. ONE WHO SOWS DISCORD AMONG BROTHERS
This is powerful.
God hates people who deliberately create division.
Someone who constantly carries stories from one person to another, creates suspicion, causes arguments, breaks friendships, or divides families and churches is doing something God takes seriously.
Not every disagreement needs to become a war.
Sometimes the godly thing is to bring peace.
Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God.” — Matthew 5:9 NKJV
HERE IS THE BIG LESSON:
Proverbs 6 is not simply telling us, “Look at what bad people do.”
It is asking us:
“What is happening inside MY heart?”
Am I becoming proud?
Am I being dishonest?
Am I planning evil?
Am I too quick to run toward temptation?
Am I spreading things that cause division?
We cannot change ourselves by pretending these things don’t exist.
But we can bring our hearts before God and say:
“Lord, search my heart. Show me anything in me that does not please You, and help me change.”
PRAYER:
Father, search our hearts and reveal anything in us that displeases You. Remove pride, dishonesty, hatred, wicked intentions, and every spirit that creates division. Give us humble hearts, truthful tongues, pure intentions, and feet that run toward righteousness. Help us to become people who bring peace wherever we go. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
