Pitso Mosimane had a successful career as a professional footballer before becoming a highly decorated and legendary football coach in South Africa and the Middle East. After playing for clubs like Jomo Cosmos and Mamelodi Sundowns, he moved into coaching, managing teams such as SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns, winning multiple league titles and two CAF Champions League trophies. He is considered one of Africa's greatest coaches, having managed clubs in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and other Middle Eastern countries.
Playing career
South Africa: Pitso Mosimane began his senior professional career at Jomo Cosmos before playing for Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.
International: He made four appearances for the South African national team, Bafana Bafana, and scored on his debut in 1993.
Abroad: Mosimane also had a stint playing professionally in Greece (Ionikos), Belgium (KFC Rita Berlaar), and Qatar (Al Sadd).
Coaching career
Early coaching: His coaching career began in 1995 in Belgium as an assistant for his playing club's youth team. Upon returning to South Africa, he coached the youth teams at Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United before becoming an assistant for SuperSport's senior team.
Success in South Africa: Mosimane achieved significant success with SuperSport United and especially Mamelodi Sundowns, winning five consecutive league titles with the latter (2013/14, 2015/16, 2017/18, 2018/19, and 2019/20). He led Sundowns to their first CAF Champions League title in 2016.
International success: He is particularly known for his success with Al Ahly in Egypt, where he won two CAF Champions League titles (2020, 2021) and two CAF Super Cups, cementing his reputation as one of Africa's top coaches.
Post-Al Ahly: After his successful tenure in Egypt, Mosimane managed Al Ahli Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and was most recently managing Abha FC.
Recognition: His achievements have led to him being widely recognized as one of South Africa's greatest coaches and one of the best-performing coaches in world football.
Legacy: He has also founded the Pitso Mosimane Youth Football initiative to develop future talent.
Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Willard Katsande has publicly backed celebrated South African coach Pitso Mosimane to take over as head coach of the Zimbabwe national football team.
