Israel has admitted responsibility for an airstrike that killed five Al Jazeera journalists, including veteran correspondent Anas al-Sharif, in what the network is calling a deliberate assassination.

The strike hit a press tent outside al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, where the journalists were covering the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Al Jazeera condemned the attack as a “premeditated attempt to silence the truth,” accusing Israel of targeting media workers to suppress coverage of the worsening situation on the ground.

Rights groups, including the Committee to Protect Journalists, have rejected Israel’s assertion that the journalists were linked to militant activities, insisting that press freedom must be protected even during armed conflict.

Several prominent legacy foundations and political groups have withdrawn from South Africa’s national dialogue process, raising serious concerns about its legitimacy and prospects for success. The Steve Biko Foundation, Thabo Mbeki Foundation, Chief Albert Luthuli Foundation, Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, FW de Klerk Foundation, Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Foundation, and the Strategic Dialogue Group have all pulled out, citing that dialogue cannot be built on haste or superficial engagement.

Their collective withdrawal from the Preparatory Task Team and the upcoming First National Convention signals a lack of trust in the process, which they say has been rushed without adequate consultation or transparency.

Political party ActionSA is also rethinking its participation, warning the dialogue risks becoming a government-directed exercise lacking genuine citizen involvement.

The withdrawals underscore the need for more careful planning and inclusive engagement if the dialogue is to address South Africa’s deep social, political, and economic challenges effectively.

We will die here.” He rejected moving south, insisting Palestinians deserve to live safely like others worldwide.
