SCOTTISH DELEGATES VISIT FAWEMA-SUPPORTED PROJECT IN NTCHISI
On Wednesday, July 2, 2025, the Forum for African Women Educationalists in Malawi (FAWEMA) hosted two delegates from the Scottish Government, who were visiting Malawi to observe and appreciate the impact of development programs funded through Scottish partnerships.
The delegates—Ms. Alice Bayles, Lead for Partnerships (Civil Society and Countries), and Ms. Chloe Mitton, Equality Programme and Policy Manager—are both from the Directorate for Culture and External Affairs.
During their visit, the officials toured Good Results for All (GoRA), a local non-governmental organization based in Ntchisi District. GoRA is implementing the Gender Equality, Women and Girls Empowerment project in Ntchisi and Dowa districts. The initiative is funded by the Scottish Government under the Women and Girls Fund, with FAWEMA serving as the intermediary partner.
The project focuses on empowering communities around Dzaleka Refugee Camp by promoting gender equality, preventing sexual and gender-based violence, advocating for women’s land rights, and supporting women’s economic empowerment. Its overarching goal is to foster a society where women and girls can fully enjoy their rights and lead dignified, empowered lives.
Ms. Bayles expressed her admiration for the work being done by GoRA, particularly in the areas of good governance and the empowerment of women and girls.
“When you look at the overall programs they have implemented so far and those they are currently implementing, it is impressive, and we look forward to working with them,” she said.
GoRA Executive Director, Mr. Matthias Chindungwa, commended FAWEMA for its transparent and merit-based approach to selecting local implementing partners.
“The call was advertised in newspapers and was open to all organizations. We are proud to have been selected to implement this important project in the two districts,” he said.
FAWEMA Programmes Manager, Mrs. Mphatso Kapalamula, noted that 114 women-focused local organizations applied for funding. Of these, 15 were shortlisted to develop a full proposal and seven were ultimately selected to implement projects under the Women and Girls Fund.
Managed by Ecorys, the Women and Girls Fund is a four-year Scottish Government-funded programme aimed at providing targeted direct funding to support women and girls local organizations in Malawi, Zambia, and Rwanda through FAWEMA in Malawi, Forum for African Women Educationalists Rwanda and Forum for African Women Educationalists Zambia (FAWEZA).
