🇿🇦❤️ HERITAGE DOESN’T END WHEN HERITAGE DAY DOES

Heritage Day was yesterday, but the lessons behind it are something we can carry with us every day.

For children, heritage is more than a public holiday. It’s learning about where they come from, their family’s stories, their language, traditions, culture and the people who came before them.

It’s also about learning to respect that other families may have different stories, traditions and ways of life. 🌍

👨‍👩‍👧 Talk to your child about your family history.
📖 Share stories from grandparents and older family members.
🍲 Make a traditional family meal together.
🗣️ Teach them words from your home language.
❤️ Encourage respect for cultures and traditions that may be different from their own.

Parent Tip: You don't need a special day to teach children about heritage. Even a simple conversation at home can help a child understand where they come from — and teach them to appreciate where others come from too.

🌍 DIFFERENT IS SOMETHING TO CELEBRATE ❤️

Children naturally notice differences.

One friend may speak another language. Another may bring a different lunch to school. Some families have different traditions, celebrations, clothing, music or ways of doing things.

And that's okay. In fact, that's what makes our communities special. 🌈

👧🏽👦🏻 Teach children that being different doesn't mean being strange or wrong.

Instead of laughing at something they don't understand, encourage them to ask questions kindly and respectfully.

💬 “What language do you speak at home?”
🍲 “What is your favourite family meal?”
🎶 “What music do you enjoy?”
🎉 “What special traditions does your family have?”

Parent Tip: Children learn from the way we respond to differences. Show them that curiosity, kindness and respect are always better than judgement.

🌍❤️ WHAT MAKES ME, ME?

Heritage Day may be over, but learning about who we are doesn’t have to stop there.

Every child has a story — shaped by their family, traditions, language, food, music, clothing, celebrations and the stories passed down through generations.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Talk to your child about where your family comes from.
🍲 Cook a favourite family recipe together.
🗣️ Teach them words from your home language.
🎶 Share a song or tradition that is special to your family.
📖 Tell them stories about their grandparents and where their family has come from.

Most importantly, teach children that every family has a story worth knowing and every culture deserves respect.

✨ Our differences help make our world beautiful — and knowing where we come from helps children understand who they are.

🛡️ KIDS' SAFETY TIP #5: KNOW YOUR TRUSTED ADULTS

Every child should know who they can go to for help.

Together, choose 3–5 trusted adults your child knows and feels comfortable talking to.

For example:

👩 Mom or Dad
👵 A grandparent
👩‍🏫 A teacher
👨 A trusted family member
👮 A trusted security or emergency official when help is needed

Make sure your child knows that asking for help is never something to be embarrassed about.

“If you needed help and I wasn't there, who would you go to?”

❤️ KIDS' SAFETY TIP #4: TRUST YOUR FEELINGS

Children should know that it's okay to say NO when something doesn't feel right.

Teach them:

🛑 “NO, I don't want to.”
🏃 “I need to go find my Mom/Dad.”
📢 “HELP!” if they feel they are in danger.

Most importantly, tell your child:

“You can always tell me if something happened. You will not be in trouble for telling me.”

Children need to know that trusted adults will listen, believe them and help them.

📱 KIDS' SAFETY TIP #3: KEEP PERSONAL INFORMATION PRIVATE

Children are growing up online, and it's important they know that not everyone they meet online is a friend.

Teach your child not to share:

🚫 Their home address
🚫 Their school or daily routine
🚫 Their phone number
🚫 Passwords
🚫 Photos or information that makes them uncomfortable

If someone online asks them to keep a secret from Mom or Dad, that's a big red flag.

👉 Encourage your child to come to you if anything online makes them uncomfortable — no matter what happened.

👨‍👩‍👧 KIDS' SAFETY TIP #2: STAY CLOSE IN PUBLIC

Busy shops, shopping centres and events can be overwhelming for little ones.

Teach your child:

✅ Stay close to your parent or trusted adult.
✅ Don't wander off, even if you see something interesting.
✅ If you become separated, stay where you are and ask a trusted staff member, security officer or another safe adult with children for help.
✅ Learn your parent's full name and phone number.

💡 Practise what to do if you get separated — it helps children feel prepared rather than frightened.

🔐 KIDS' SAFETY TIP #1: KNOW WHO IS ALLOWED IN

Teach your child that they should never open the door or gate for a stranger, even if the person says they know Mom or Dad.

✅ Never let someone inside without checking with a trusted adult first.
✅ Don't tell strangers that you're home alone.
✅ If someone makes you feel uncomfortable, move away and tell a trusted adult immediately.

A simple rule for kids:

👉 “If Mom or Dad hasn't said it's okay, I don't open the door.”

Talk about safety before an emergency happens. ❤️
