BAD SISTER CHAPTER 6

"No!"

"No?" He questions.

My eyes are wide and I'm panicking. But when I hear the stool scrap against the floor, I lose my mind.

"Rei-" I bite my tongue before I can even finish and look over my shoulder.

"Kira," Maddie calls out. "Everything okay?"

I nod, giving her a convincing smile and walk out of the apartment before she can protest.

In the hall, I stand against the wall, staring at the number engraved on the door.

"Kira," I hear him say. He sounds annoyed and tired. "I don't want this any more than you-"

I barely get the chance to reply when he hangs up. And just like that, I feel -actually, I know that we're doomed.

I should've never tried to keep this from her.

"F**k!" I scream while gripping the phone in my hand.

The door opens and Maddie is leaned against the threshold, her face contorted with worry.

"Is everything okay?" She asks, crossing her arms. She frowns. "Who was that?"

I gulp, "Yeah. . ."

My attention is grasped when the elevator chimes letting out a built man in formal wear. He looks too expensive for this place with his clean white shirt and navy slacks.

My knees suddenly feel weak when I catch the determination in his dark eyes. His sharp jaw clenches as he walks, looking straight at me.

I press up against the wall giving him space to pass but he doesn't, instead, he stands so close to me with a gut wrenching smile. He looks older up close, which makes me feel small beside him.

My eyes widen as realisation strikes and I look at Maddie. Her eyes are wide too, with shock and she shifts her gaze to me.

Then he stretches his hand to Maddie andd in the smoothest voice he says,"I don't believe we've met. I'm Randall."

I roll my eyes, of course.

She looks at him, then back at me in question. I merely shrug, feeling a little panic.

Here we go again.

"Madilyn." She replies firmly shaking his hand. "You are . . .?"

"Kira's fiance."

That alone is enough for me to choke on my own saliva. I cough and pat my chest, praying that I heard wrong.

Fiance?

What the hell?

"Ex-cuse me?" I speaks in between coughs.

I look at my sister and her eyes are wider than saucers.

"Fiance." She nods glancing between me and the man.

"Oh don't be like that sweetheart." He looks at Maddie. "She didn't tell you?" He says unapologetically.

Sweetheart?

Tell her what?

"Tell me what?" Maddie looks at me, her lips curving as she stares at him curiously.

And just when I think he'll stop talking nonsense and start making sense, I'm left wishing for the ground to open up and swallow me.

Unexpectedly, I feel his calloused hand grip my waist and me flash against his tall frame.

"We're pregnant."

F**k. My. Life.

We? Who's we?

I'm too embarassed to look at Maddie, I'm afraid of what I'll see, I'm afraid of what she'll say. I keep my head down, my head swarming with questions and anger.

How did he know?

Who the does he think he is? Your fiance, I think to myself.

God, who's relationship did I wreck now?

A part of me wants to see Maddie's face, her reaction but I'm also ashamed.

"Pregnant?" She finally speaks up. It's enough for me to lift my head up and see her standing coyly against the threshold.

Randall lets me go and grips my hand instead.

"Well, I'd love to stay and chat," he tells her. "But wedding to plan and parents to meet, you know?"

I frown, looking at him, parents to meet?

Then I remember what Reilly had said when he called. That would explain why Randall looks a lot like him.

My family wants to meet you.

Maddie's reply is delayed as she nods, "Yeah, yeah. For sure. I'll see you when you get back." She says. "Call me!"

But what if my deduction is wrong, I wonder. Then I'll just run as soon as we get downstairs.

I feel relief when I see Reilly carelessly leaning against a grey Renault Clio with his arms crossed.

He looks like he's posing for one of his photoshoots, with his casual, laidback attire.

At least my window is facing an alleyway, otherwise I'd be roadkill right now.

I find myself smiling but quickly mask it with a frown, trying to convey my anger and surprise, but no one stands around for too long, both men get into the car.

I contemplate getting in. I'm not ready for whatever this is, this ambush. I still have to digest what just happened.

Why did his brother introduce himself as my fiance? Was that just for casualty?

Most likely. The forced grin on his face said it all.

I shrug it off and take a deep breath before entering the car.

It's a long way to wherever we're going and at some point I began wondering whether I'd made the right choice riding along with men I hardly know.

And at one point I'm caught up in their conversation.

"This is stupid." I hear Reilly speak up, looking at his brother.

"What?" Randall raises an amused eyebrow. "Cleaning up your mess?"

"Going after Michael." Reilly says. "Don't you get tired?"

My eyes shift between the two as they speak, and I find myself leaning closer.

Randall rubs a finger under his lip,"I just want what's rightfully mine."

"Fiona is not going to take this well." Reilly chuckles.

My heart jumps into my throat when I catch Randall's eyes in the rear view mirror.

"She chose Michael."

Reilly then looks to his brother, disbelief glazing his eyes.

A few minutes pass and no one speaks again, so I lay back. And after some turns on empty roads he finally stops in front of a contemporary mansion.

He completes a facial recognition and we're in.

I barely get anytime to explore the home as I feel my curiosity and frustration grow.

I need to get this over and done with.

I walk with determination and purpose but when I see the Michael Michaelson at his desk in nothing more than his polished signature suit. Black, like always.

"Making me interim CEO will put the board at ease." Are Randall's first words to his father as he stands in front of him with his hands in his pocket.

My pulse skips a beat and I cannot imagine talking to my father like that.

Michael looks past his son and strides towards me.

He smiles, "Kira, we've heard so much about you."

I gulp and glance at Reilly. All good things I hope.

After all, there is no one else I'm acquainted with more than him.

Unless.

Unless Michael has met Maddie. But I doubt that, she would've said something.

But then again. . .

"My son tells me you're pregnant," Michael says calmly. Then he urges me to the sofa. "Come, sit sit."

Again, I look at Reilly who avoids my gaze.

Michael sits down with me, making sure to keep some distance between us.

"I hope you know everything we do from now onwards is in yours and the baby's best interest." He says earnestly.

I frown, confused,"What do you mean?"

"I believe you've met Randall," he points to him.

Unfortunately, I roll my eyes and then respectfully nod afterwards.

"We can't have people out there knowing that my youngest proposed to one sister and knocked up the other," he says. Right. I'm too afraid to do anything else but listen intently and nod. "For everyone's sake, Kira you're going to marry Randall."

BAD SISTER CHAPTER 5
As the days go by I find myself excited yet afraid of everything that is soon to follow.

Affraid of the high and lows; the morning sickness, the cravings, the exhaustion and worst of all; being alone.

I laugh tearing up while staring at my reflection.

I can't wait for the baby bump.

I have always dreamed of this moment and have ever since thought of a million names I'd give to my baby. Everytime I was so sure by every other day I had another name lined up and now, I can't wait to give my baby her name.

Her. I hope it's a girl.

In my head, I can already see her in my as; small and fragile, smiling with her eyes closed, with a head of soft brown curls like her mother.

Using my hands to outline my flat stomach, I imagine what it would be like and smile. Then I push my stomach out and pray that the bump doesn't grow skew or cone shaped.

I'm just not ready for that.

My pulse quickens when I suddenly hear jiggling at the door. I wrap my robe around my body and run to the living room.

Who could that be? Did I give anyone my spare key?

Oh s**t. My eyes widen with panic when I remember that I've been living alone for over a year.

I'm quick to find the bat dad gave me when we moved to the city. I tighten my hold on me and standby to swing.

Please God, I start my little prayer, not today.

My body freezes when the key finally clicks in place and I start screaming, ready to swing the bat as the door opens.

Surprisingly, the intruder let's out a high pitch scream when I scream.

I open my eyes and anger burns inside my chest.

"What the hell Madilyn?!" I yell, dropping my arm exasperated.

"Me?" She says and softly stabs the keys against her bosom. "You're the one with a freaking bat!"

I look at my sister and nearly facepalm myself, wondering how I got so lucky with her. How does she still have that key anyway?

I sigh, "I thought I was getting robbed!" I point out.

"Argh, whatever," She dismisses. "You can calm down now mama bear."

My heart hammers against my chest when she says that, my mind racing with guilt.

I watch her trudge into my apartment with two designer suitcases in tow. She looks bright with high waist pink pant suit shorts matched with a white silk top and simple heels. Light make up marred her face as she let her brown curls loose.

I close the door and follow her, crossing my arms.

She huffs when she perches down on the sofa with her head on the backrest.

"What are you doing here Maddie?" I ask her.

"I live here, Kira." She deadpans while surveying the place, then she flinches. "We leased this place with together, remember?"

Oh for f***s sake. How could I forget? And she couldn't have had impeccable timing.

She stands from the sofa and walks around, grimacing whenever she runs her finger over surfaces that I haven't bothered to clean.

What a way to make me feel like a snob.

Frowning, I ask, "But what are you doing here, after all this time?"

"Well, with the wedding and everything," she starts leaning against the kitchen island, her eyes downcast and wide. She sighs and smiles, "I'm moving in."

Oh hell no.

"No!"

"No?" She repeats, "What do you mean no?"

"You can't just wake up and move back in." I argue, feeling my heart race. She just can't up and move back in. Not now. "I don't want you here!"

God, please no. Please let me wake up from this.

She frowns and narrows her brown eyes at me. "Well that's not your call to make, miss thang!"

"Madi-"

"No!" She cuts me off with a pointed finger. "I'm moving in and that's it."

With that she stomps her feet, grabs her suitcase and marches up to her supposed room.

Kill me now. I'm left heaving and speechless when she slams the door.

A thousand things run through my mind yet I can't seem to grasp one and hold on to it.

I take in what just happened then move to get something out of the fridge to eat and binge The Society in the dark.

After my sister's ungracious move, we barely stand to talk, just pleasantries here and there then everyone goes their way.

Before I know it our days of silence turn into two weeks.

Two weeks of Maddie's friends coming and going as they please.

Two weeks of random furniture arrangements around the place.

Two weeks of finding spoons and forks mixed up, and cups and plates packed in different cupboards.

Two weeks of hiding my morning sickness and excessive eating. It made me insecure and frustrated.

I kept in mind that at least I'm not alone anymore, even though, I dread having to tell her.

I mean what will I tell her exactly?

Everything.

F**k my life.

I'm in the kitchen, one Saturday morning, stuffing my face with my mom's avocado-egg sandwich. It tastes nothing like the one's she makes.

But I can't waste food so I grimace and gag whenever I take a bite and swallow.

Maybe I shouldn't have used whole wheat bread.

Maddie suddenly emerges and takes her bottle from the fridge. I watch her as she walks backs to her room but she stops dead in her track.

"You know," she starts with her back turned to me. "I moved back here with hope that my big sister would love to be my maid of honour."

My eyes widen just as my breath hitches in my throat. What?

She turns around, her clean face void of emotion. "But looks like I was wrong."

She then walks back to the counter, opting to sit with me.

"I'm so sorry Maddie." I say. I feel my nose sting as tears burn my eyes.

"Ever since my birthday you've been acting weirder than usual. Did something happen?" She holds my hand on the counter, staring deep into my eyes. "You can talk to me Kira. About anything."

I gulp, looking away like her gaze just saw right through me and scorched me.

Then the tears, I'm trying so hard to hold back, come rolling down my cheeks.

"I'm sorry." I apologize and she immediately pulls me into her arms.

"It's okay, Kira." She says.

"No, no it's not. I've been a bitch to you and. . ."

"And what?" She pulls away, her eyebrows scrunched up with confusion and curiosity.

I sit up and sniff, swiping at my nose.

My heart clenches, screaming at me as I open my mouth to speak, but nothing seems to come out except one word.

"I. . ."

It's now or never.

Then suddenly, a phone rings. My phone. I silently thank God and whoever's calling for the interuption -for saving me from another mistake.

I'm not ready. She can't know.

It stops and starts ringing again.

Maddie let's go of my shoulders and shifts in her seat, giving me way to pass.

I glance at her, debate rising within me to tell her everything, but I decide against it and answer my phone instead.

I freeze and nearly drop the phone when I see the caller ID.

Reilly.

I look at Maddie and change position, hiding my phone.

"Hello?" I whisper, glancing back at my sister.

"My family wants to meet you. I'll be there in five minutes."

Oh s**t.

BAD SISTER CHAPTER 4

"I can't believe I'm engaged."

Maddie marvels at the diamond ring on her finger with a silly grin on her sculpted face.

"I can't believe you got Reilly Michaelson to actually put a ring on it," one of her English friends, Winter, pipes in.

Winter twists and turns my sister's hand, weighing the ring with her the sky blue eyes.

For some reason my heart clenches in my chest, aching by the minute and I find it hard to take deep breaths.

My shoulders feel heavier by the second and I sigh when I see a hopeless brunette with dark circles around her eyes nursing a baby. She holds her baby in one arm while chugging her third cup of coffee.

I gulp and think back to my appointment with Desiree and her casually telling me that I'm pregnant.

"You're technically rich by association now." Brenda gushes putting our drinks on the table as she sits down on the vacant chair.

"Well, I can't believe you really said yes to him," I blurt. When I laugh, I keep my head down feeling that familiar sting on the bridge of my nose.

I swear everyone has their eyes on me right now, I feel scrutinised.

How can I even say that to her? How can she accept his proposal without talking to me?

I read somewhere that acceptance is a process, and if that's the case I think it's going to be a while for me, considering how I must've bought half a dozen of pregnancy tests on my way home from the hospital.

I thought, maybe she got the results mixed up. After all, these things do happen a lot.

But then again symptoms and tests don't lie.

Maddie sits upright as Winter gives me an incredulous look. "Well what was I supposed to do Kira, reject him in front a thousand people?"

"Can't you at least pretend to be happy for her." Winter interjects. I narrow my eyes at her and she glares at me and it feels like she's seeing right through me.

Argh, I just need this to stop.

"It's not like I planned for it to happen."

"Yeah," I let out a dry laugh, wiping a treacherous tear on my cheek, "You never plan for anything to happen."

Yet everything still goes perfectly for you, I want to add, but my heart drops as I recollect the words that came out of my mouth. Just like me.

"Hey!" Brendy gasps. "What the hell?"

"Awkward." Winter sings to herself.

Maddie stays still for a moment, her brown eyes unblinking as she stares at me. And when she finally does blink, a frown takes over her face.

With my heart in my throat, I bolt up from the chair, attracting more attention than I'd like. I regret what I said and I wish I could take it back.

I'm taking my frustrations out on her.

I'm supposed to be looking out for her, but like always, I'm taking my frustrations out on her. F**k.

"Kira, you can talk to me," she finally says in the softest voice with utmost love and care.

Before leaving, I take a deep breath and look at my sister as it dawns on me. "I'm sorry, Maddie, but I have to do something"

I'm barely past the door when I dial the number at the bottom of my inbox.

It rings for what feels like an excruciating eternity but then goes straight to voicemail.

I look back at the restaurant I left Maddie in and a part of me wants to see her walk after me. But then she doesn't.

My hand is shaking when I decide to call again, my pulse is beating fast and my nerves are a total mess. I let out a breath of relief, a little panic still residing in me when he answers on the second ring.

"I'm pregnant." Is what I manage to say to him, followed by a series of instructions and a location before the call is ended.

I'm sitting in the reception at the abortion clinic, with my leg bouncing as I nervously pull my lip between my teeth.

The light red hue on the walls does nothing to soothe me and the advertising channel put on TV is even more annoying than the nurse calling us out one by one for the procedure.

I can't believe I'm doing this.

I don't know what to do or say when Reilly strides in looking confused like he just walked into the wrong building. Above all, he looks disturbed by the feminine colours around us.

I gulp and stand up deciding to meet him halfway.

"How are you?" He asks concerned. His voice is rough and strained.

I nod in response and mumble fine.

I sit back down with a heavy heart and he follows suit.

A minute of silence hangs over us.

"My doctor said I'm four weeks along." I glance at him then look down at my fingers. "So it won't feel as bad. It's barely developed."

I've been telling myself the same thing since I found out and each time doesn't make it feel any better.

"Congratulations." I nervously laugh then he blankly looks at me.

"If I'd known. . ." He trails off. He puts his elbows on his knees and brushes his neat hair back.

"It wouldn't have made a difference besides the point that Maddie is too young to get married." I nearly shout. I look around at the heads raised my way and back down.

Neither one of us has anything to say for the next twenty minutes. The room slowly empties with each dreadful minute.

"So this is your solution?"

"I don't have a choice." I tell him, feeling my anger grow.

Reilly then smiles at nothing and holds my hand.

"Whatever you want." He says, still smiling as he looks at me.

I bite my lip and contemplate my next words. "I want to have this baby," I hear myself say, "but not at the expense of my sister's happiness."

This could ruin her.

It will ruin us.

My eyes widen with the conclusion. I actually want this? Biting my lip, I feel my heart swoon at the overwhelming thought of motherhood.

It will ruin everyone. Madilyn; Reilly; me; their wedding; everything.

I smile at the thought; their wedding. My sister's getting married.

Reilly turns in his seat,"I won't tell her if you promise not to." He says.

My eyes widen and I shake my head,"I promise."

It amazes me how I don't even take a minute to think about anything when I reply, mostly because I was afraid to lose a part of me I was yet to explore.

Honestly, I'm not ready for the pain.

All this time I've been thinking about Maddie instead of what I want. I didn't even give myself the chance to think about the outcome of having this baby.

I sigh and smile grateful of the call I'd made to earlier.

After a moment, Reilly and I stand up and finally walk out of the clinic guilt free.

BAD SISTER CHAPTER 3

In the month that follows, my heart slowly feels more at peace, even though the week after my sister's birthday had my stomach in knots whenever I saw her.

For a week, I could not sit still without thinking about that night; about Reilly. Being alone didn't help much either. Because what do I have more than time for my thoughts to eat me alive. Nothing but guilt and regret.

I didn't talk or reply to Reilly's text after that day. I doubt he even thought about me. . . especially since he was with Maddie twenty-four seven promoting upcoming designers.

For his brand, Maddie had told me one time. I had occasionally called her when she told me. Plus, he's genuinely a kind person, she'd added.

I smiled at that, pressing my lips together as she went on and on talking. When she spoke, my heart soared for her. I was happy and proud of her.

Unlike me, she was really working towards her dreams rather than sitting on them.

I sigh, life.

While she was away, I made my mind up and told myself that she didn't have to know. Afterall, what she doesn't know won't kill her. At first I was worried that Reilly would say something about that night, but recent events had proved otherwise.

I don't know whether to think that he's afraid to lose her or, maybe he is actually in love with her as she had claimed.

"Thank you so much for this Toby,"

"It's no problem Kira," he replies cheerfully while I pull my things together.

I heave, shoving things into my purse. "There's a dry clean pick up in an hour," I tell him as I walk to the door.

"Ms Gardner," we both say in unison. He nods and smiles behind the counter.

I force a smile, trying to push away the pessimist in me. I bite on my thumb nail, holding onto the door as I survey the place. I hope I didn't forget anything else.

"I'll be fine." Toby reassures. "You just go get your pap smear."

"Check up." I correct. More or less getting test results.

His bushy eyebrows scrunch up with confusion. "What?"

But he doesn't need to know that.

"It's a check up," I tell him, "Not a pap smear."

The look he gives me makes my insecurities intensify. And I wonder if I made the right call asking my neighbor's kid to fill in for me at work while I go to the clinic.

Toby presses his lips together as awkwardness fills the atmosphere. He looks around and starts playing with the remote before surfing through the limited TV channels.

"I'll be back in half an hour." I tell him.

"Sure," he says, calmly as I leave. "Take your time Kira."

The door shuts behind me and if I wasn't hot enough, the sun puts me to shame as it feels closer and bright than it was earlier.

My drying throat and aching stomach makes me doubt if I can walk to the clinic.

Given that it's barely past lunch hour, the town is quiet and calm. Thankfully, the laundromat is on the outskirts of town, but also close to the suburbs.

With a heavy sigh, I look from left to right and I shade my eyes with the back of my hand as I walk to the closest bus stand.

A visit home sounds good right about now. When I sit at the stand I think of the egg and avocado sandwiches my mother made for us in my senior year.

Unfortunately I gag at the thought of half cooked eggs drenched in oil.

By the time a bus comes by, I feel as if everyone around me is sent to tempt me with food. More half the occupants of the bus had something edible in their hands, most of it causing bile to consistently rush up my throat.

Argh, these craving having been getting the worst out of me.

If Maddie was here, she would be laughing her ass off at my weight gain all while reprimanding me from going to see our parents.

The downside of going home was the disappointment I'd face if Maddie didn't come along. The biggest one being from dad if he finds out that his daughter didn't have what he calls 'a solid job'.

My heart thuds when the bus comes to a stop and I literally shove people out of the way as I walk with my head down.

I message Desiree as I near the clinic.

I make a silent prayer when I get into the clinic and sit down. The clinic seems busy, with workers in scrubs rushing about while people impatiently wait for assistance.

Once again, I feel that my body burn up like it did when I woke up in Reilly's bed.

I gulp, and guilt overwhelms me.

A few minutes later Desiree comes and we're on our way to her office.

"Okay. I got your test results back." She says sweetly, with a big smile on her face. "Congratulations, you are four weeks pregnant."

"What?" I laugh, smacking the chairs arm. "That's impossible." I force another laugh.

I barely digest the words before reacting. Pregnant.

Desiree frowns and crosses her arms, "Well, when was the last time you had s*x?"

"Five mo-"

Oh s**t.

"But that's impossible." I argue.

Perfect. Just perfect.

"Who's the father?" She asks, curiously leaning in.

I gulp and stare at her. My sister's boyfriend. Perfect.

I laugh, standing up, but deep down but heart is shattering and I'm hopeless.

Suddenly my stomach growls and when I feel that familiar rush in my throat I run into the restroom with my hand covering my mouth.

By the time I get out of the restroom, a few girls, gathered by the TV with their heads tilted up are screeching.

Curiousity gets the best of me and I'm walking to them, wiping vomit from my lips.

I fing myself, watching with them and a picture of Maddie, laughing, with Reilly is on TV.

I gulp and digest the bits and pieces.

"Oil tycoon; Michael Michaelson's son, Reilly Michaelson proposes to girlfriend, upcoming model Madilyn Pierce with a romantic gesture."

My breath hitches in my throat and for a second I forget how to breathe. This is just great.

He proposed to her.

F**k my life.
