Today: World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

2026 Theme: Beyond Awareness: Making Elder Abuse Prevention Work

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, designated as 15 June, was initiated by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) in 2006, and recognised as a United Nations Day by the General Assembly in its resolution A/RES/66/127 adopted in 2011.

According to World Heath Organization, elder abuse can be defined as "a single, or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship, where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person." Elder abuse can take various forms such as physical, psychological or emotional, sexual and financial abuse. It can also be the result of intentional or unintentional neglect.

In many parts of the world elder abuse occurs with little recognition or response. Until recently, this serious social problem was hidden from the public view and considered mostly a private matter. Even today, elder abuse continues to be a taboo, mostly underestimated and ignored by societies across the world. Evidence is accumulating, however, to indicate that elder abuse is an important public health and societal problem.

Jobs Promise for Free State Young People

At the launch of the Youth Month Programme in Bloemfontein on Friday, 12th June 2026, hundreds of young people heard that more than R400 billion in investment has been secured for the Free State province.

The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) also announced that more than 7,200 jobs will be created in the province as part of a national programme aimed at generating 100,000 youth employment opportunities.

Free State Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae said a diverse pool of investors, spanning the automotive and energy sectors, is set to invest in the Free State.

The investment package include:

*An establishment of a manufacturing plant by an international vehicle manufacturer at the Maluti-a-Phofung Special Economic Zone (MAP SEZ) in the Thabo Mofutsanyana District.

*Following the Premier’s investment missions to China and Italy, a major energy and automobile company has committed to establishing electric vehicle charging stations along key routes across the Free State.

*A global battery manufacturer will also open battery production facilities across the province.

The premier said this year’s Youth Month commemoration takes place under unique circumstances, with the current generation confronting challenges that differ from those faced by the youth of 1976. Today’s young people are grappling with high unemployment, persistent poverty, and deep inequality.

Adding that young people must become strategic partners of the government in driving development and economic growth.

“As we commemorate the 50th anniversary of Youth Month, let us remember the great sacrifices made by those who came before us. Let us honour them by refusing to be enslaved by dangerous substances and by making education fashionable. Let us also honour them by dedicating ourselves to becoming active participants in building a prosperous province and making the Free State a great place to live,” said Premier Letsoha-Mathae.

The launch began with a Youth Walk Against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF). The march also coincided with the display of community solidarity with 22 year old Masego Mogorosi, a young student teacher who was allegedly assaulted by a man who attends a school where she is completing her teaching practicals.

Zamdela Killer Boyfriend Lebohang Mofokeng Sentenced to 24 years Imprisonment for Murder and R**e of his Girlfriend

The Free State High Court sitting in Sasolburg has sentenced 35-year-old Lebohang Johannes Mofokeng to 24 years' direct imprisonment for the murder and r**e of his girlfriend, Nomalanga Dlamini.

The sentence stems from a tragic incident that occurred on 7 May 2022, when members of the South African Police Service in Zamdela responded to reports of a woman lying motionless next to a road.

Upon arrival, police found the body of a woman covered with a duvet. The victim was barefoot, dressed in a black T-shirt and naked from the waist down. She had sustained severe head injuries and was declared dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.

The investigation was led by Detective Sergeant Oupa Jhekemba, who immediately began gathering evidence. Preliminary investigations at the crime scene resulted in the swift arrest of the suspect at his residence.

Investigators later established that the accused and the deceased had spent time together at a local tavern before the incident. It was revealed that an argument broke out while the couple was walking home, escalating into a violent attack.

The accused assaulted and r**ed the victim before leaving her on the roadside.

Following a comprehensive investigation and successful prosecution, the court found Mofokeng guilty of both murder and r**e. On 2 June 2026, the court sentenced him to 24 years' direct imprisonment.

The conviction and sentencing mark the conclusion of a case that has highlighted the devastating impact of gender-based violence and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable through the justice system.
