In the Scripture, the prophet Samuel chose a young man named Saul to be the first leader of Israel. Saul was tall, good looking, strong, he looked like a king. But over time, Saul got off course. He started compromising and not making good decisions. Finally, God told Samuel that He was rejecting Saul as the king. Samuel was so disappointed that the Scripture says he wept and wept. In 1 Samuel 16, God said, “Samuel, how long are you going to mourn over Saul?” God is asking us, how long are you going to mourn over what you’ve lost? How long are you going to be discouraged over the relationship that didn’t work out, over the position that you didn’t get, over the loved one that didn’t make it? The problem with continuing to mourn is it will keep you from the new things that God has for you. Yes, there’s a time for mourning, but you can’t let a season of mourning turn into a lifetime of mourning.

God says: “Since man believes in God, he must closely follow the footsteps of God, step-by-step; he should ‘follow the Lamb wherever He goes.’ Only these are the people who seek the true way, only they are the ones who know the work of the Holy Spirit. People who slavishly follow words and doctrines are those who have been eliminated by the work of the Holy Spirit. In each period of time, God will begin new work, and in each period, there will be a new beginning among man. If man only abides by the truths that ‘Jehovah is God’ and ‘Jesus is Christ,’ which are truths that only apply to their respective ages, then man will never keep up with the work of the Holy Spirit, and will forever be incapable of gaining the work of the Holy Spirit. Regardless of how God works, man follows without the slightest doubt, and he follows closely. In this way, how could man be eliminated by the Holy Spirit? Regardless of what God does, as long as man is certain that it is the work of the Holy Spirit, and cooperates in the work of the Holy Spirit without any misgivings, and tries to meet the requirements of God, then how could he be punished?”

The Scripture says, “Don’t despise the day of small beginnings.” God loves to take our small and do big things. He’ll use what we consider insignificant, or maybe ordinary, to have a tremendous impact: the little boy’s lunch. Think about David’s sling that he used to defeat Goliath. Moses’ rod that he held up in obedience and God parted the Red Sea. Or how about Ruth’s faithfulness, taking care of her mother-in-law, gathering up the leftover wheat. She never dreamed she’d meet Boaz and become the great-grandmother of King David. There’s the butterfly effect. They were part of a bigger plan.
