🎙️ Which Format Should You Submit to Radio – MP3 or WAV? 🎧

Dear Musicians

Let’s clear the confusion for good 👇

As an artist, you’ve probably asked:
“Do I send my song to radio stations as an MP3 or WAV file?”

👉 The truth: It depends on the station.

📻 MP3 Submissions:

Most community and regional radio stations prefer MP3 because the files are smaller, easy to manage, and quick to review.

Bitrate matters: Many stations start broadcasting at around 128Kbps to 160Kbps, which means sending a 160Kbps MP3 is often acceptable.

File size limits: Some stations ask that your song file be under 5MB.

A song encoded at 320Kbps (maximum MP3 quality) can easily exceed 7–10MB depending on length.

To reduce file size: Compress the song or reduce the bitrate to 160Kbps (without severely damaging quality).

⚠️ Important: Emails with large attachments (usually over 5MB to 10MB) can get blocked or filtered into spam. Always check the station’s submission rules.

🎚️ WAV Submissions:

WAV files are uncompressed and high quality (usually 1411Kbps), but much larger in size—often 30MB to 50MB+ for a single song.

Most stations that accept WAV files will request you upload them via a submission website or Dropbox/WeTransfer, not directly by email.

WAV is preferred by commercial, national, or major FM stations where broadcast quality matters most.

✅ Best Practice:

Prepare both MP3 and WAV versions of your song.

For MP3: Aim for 160Kbps, under 5MB, clean metadata, and radio edit (if needed).

For WAV: Keep it ready for stations that request higher audio fidelity via web uploads.

🎯 Don’t lose radio opportunities because of the wrong format, file size, or bitrate. Submitting correctly shows you're professional and prepared.
