Multi-Vehicle Incident on R56 Baynsfield Leaves 12 Injured - 30 September 2025
A harrowing rescue operation unfolded on the R56 in Baynsfield this evening when a fully laden minibus taxi careened off the roadway and plummeted down an embankment landing approximately 80 meters from the road, leaving twelve people injured in challenging weather conditions.
The dramatic incident occurred at 20h20 when the taxi, carrying fifteen occupants including the driver, lost control following a separate crash involving a log truck that had overturned on the same stretch of road. The sequence of events created a complex emergency scene that demanded a coordinated multi-agency response under extremely difficult circumstances.
KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service arrived to find the mangled taxi resting far from the road surface, with patients in a precarious location made even more treacherous by heavy rainfall and compromised visibility.
Paramedics from multiple emergency medical services, including KwaZulu Private Ambulance, converged on the scene and immediately established a coordinated rescue effort. Teams worked methodically through rain and darkness to assess, stabilize, and carefully extract all twelve injured patients from the wreckage site.
Three patients sustained serious injuries requiring immediate medical interventions on scene before they could be safely moved. The remaining nine patients suffered minor to moderate injuries.
The incident has resulted in the closure of one lane on the R56, which will remain restricted while recovery operations continue to remove the taxi from its position down the embankment. Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution when traveling through the area, reduce speed, and expect delays as recovery crews work to clear the scene.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to both the log truck overturning and the subsequent taxi crash.
