Five people have perished in a horrific accident in Dokodweni, Gingindlovu: Duma mandates RTI to strengthen road safety measures ahead of school's reopening

Media and Public Statement by the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma

20 July 2025

Inkosi Mhlabunzima Maphumulo House: After what has been a relatively safe winter holiday, we have just received a report from our dedicated team from Road Traffic Inspectorate informing me about a horrific accident on R66 Nyezane in Gingindlovu.

Although the RTI teams, the South African Police Service, and emergency services are still busy with recovery and rescue operations, we wish to indicate that five passengers unfortunately died on the scene:

1. Three adults;
2. Two children.

According to RTI, the Hyundai Grand i10 was transporting eight passengers. They were travelling from Nongoma to Durban. Three other passengers from the same vehicle survived.

In a second vehicle, a white Ford Ranger LDV, there were four passengers who survived.

They were travelling towards Gingindlovu.

Preliminary reports indicate that the Ford Ranger LDV lost control and collided head-on with the Hyundai Grand i10.

We pause to pay our deepest condolences to the families of the victims.

We request motorists to be patient as both lanes remain closed.

We will send more updates as the night progresses.

As we count down to the reopening of schools, I have mandated RTI to strengthen road safety measures.

Amashova cyclists push to Durban finish line

Thousands of cyclists have begun their sprint to the finish line in the Amashova National Classic, with many making the gruelling push from Howick to Durban on Sunday morning.

"We have four distances, the Howick events, and it leaves from the Mandela capture site," said Race director, Annie Batchelder.

"We then have a 106km from the Msunduzi city Hall, and then we have two shorter distance races that one starts at Cater Ridge outside the George Cater School, and the other one is the short family ride, which starts at Shongweni on the M13."

Batchelder said the 39th edition of the annual event has drawn around 4,000 participants from across the country.

"We have a price of R250,000 and our first man and woman get R50,000 each, second R20,000, Third R10,000 each, and then the rest of the money is split between different categories," she said.

Several roads are going to be affected as the cyclists make their way to Durban's Masabalala Yengwa Avenue.

"That will be R103, Old Main Road, Shongweni Road, and M13," said Metro Police spokesperson Boysie Zungu.

"The race will counter flow on N3 from Sherwood. Continue to Dr. Monty Naicker Road, Walnut Road, and Masabalala Yengwa Avenue."

Eight people have been shot dead at an informal settlement in Umlazi U, south of Durban.

It appears that the group of six men and two women were drinking together.

The motive is unclear for now but initial information suggests it wasn’t a robbery.

Police are at the scene and investigations are under way.
