The South African Police Service (SAPS) has arrested a 30-year-old man for attempted murder after a shooting incident at Parliament tavern in Bloemfontein and left five people wounded.

According to SAPS Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli, "The incident occurred when the suspect attempted to leave the tavern with bottles of liquor."

Kareli further said, "When he was stopped by bouncers, he allegedly dropped the bottles, went to his vehicle, retrieved a firearm, and returned to the tavern, shooting randomly and wounding five individuals."

The victims sustained various gunshot wounds, including injuries to the shoulder, knees, and thighs. One victim's trousers were even grazed by a bullet, narrowly avoiding a more serious injury. One of the bouncers was shot at multiple times but escaped unharmed.

Emergency medical services responded promptly and transported the five wounded victims to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

The suspect fled the scene in his white Mazda 2 vehicle but was later apprehended by the police. Upon arrest, the suspect was found in possession of his licensed 9mm firearm.

The suspect is facing seven counts of attempted murder and will appear in court soon.

The investigation is ongoing

The football world is mourning the death of former Orlando Pirates and Zimbabwe international forward, Tendai Ndoro, who sadly passed away after a long illness. He was 40 years old.

Ndoro became a household name for his sharp eye in front of goal and his lively presence on the pitch. His sudden passing has left both South African and Zimbabwean football communities in shock.

Born in Bulawayo, Ndoro first made his name at Chicken Inn in Zimbabwe before moving to South Africa, where he joined Mpumalanga Black Aces. In 2015, he signed for Orlando Pirates, quickly becoming a fan favourite with his match-winning goals in the famous black-and-white jersey.

He later had stints abroad with Saudi Arabian side Al-Faisaly before returning to the PSL with Ajax Cape Town and Highlands Park. Ndoro also represented Zimbabwe between 2013 and 2017, including at the Africa Cup of Nations.

In recent years, Ndoro’s health declined sharply, with reports of him battling temporary blindness and other serious complications. Despite undergoing treatment and surgery earlier this year, which had raised hopes of recovery, his fight sadly came to an end.

Clubs, teammates, and fans have started sending their condolences, remembering him not only as a deadly striker but also as a player who brought flair and passion to every game.

Ndoro’s journey, filled with goals, challenges, and inspiration, leaves behind a legacy that will continue to motivate young footballers in Zimbabwe and South Africa.

May his soul rest in peace.

The Pretoria High Court has postponed the case of former Defence Minister and ex-Speaker of Parliament, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, to 21 November 2025, to allow her lawyers to go through the docket documents and obtain bank statements connected to the allegations.

Mapisa-Nqakula faces 12 counts of corruption and one of money laundering, accused of pocketing over R4.5 million in bribes from a defence contractor between 2016 and 2019 in exchange for steering government tenders.

Businesswoman Nombasa Ntsondwa-Ndhlovu, the sole director of logistics company Umkhombe Marine, which did business with the South African National Defence Force, is set to testify as a Section 204 witness.

In February 2016, her company was awarded a contract valued at R104 million and a few days later, she was informed it had been suspended.

Ntsondwa-Ndhlovu claims to have contacted several people to address the issue and was eventually provided with Mapisa-Nqakula’s contact number.

She alleges that she gave Mapisa-Nqakula cash payments at her home and in restaurants, and lawyers have indicated they will seek footage from those establishments.

Ntsondwa-Ndhlovu may be granted immunity from prosecution.

A 34-year-old man has been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment by the Sasolburg Regional Court on 8 August.

The incident occurred at approximately 02:00 on 26 May where the suspect, Ditlhase Masita, approached the 16-year-old victim who was walking with her three friends- one female and two males. Masita, also known as Sparks by the victim, was accompanied by a male figure when they approached the victim and her friends. Sparks and his accomplice chased the two male friends while they threatened them with a knife. The victim and her female friend, were then forcefully taken to a shebeen, where Sparks and co forced them to consume alcohol. Sparks then forced the victim to go with him to his friend’s place.

Sergeant Josephine Rani narrated what transpired upon arrival at the shack. “The suspect undressed and r***d the victim, telling her that the reason for ra**ng her was because her older sister would not date him, and she would pay the price for her sister's stubbornness, and that her older brother had assaulted his brother.”

The victim was then released and she told her older sister what had happened. Her sister took her to the police station to open a case of r**e and kidnapping.

SAPS gave credit to Zamdela Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Unit and Detective Constable Nomathemba Mokhele for ensuring that justice is served for the victim.

A nail-biting finish awaits in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) as South Africa, Uganda and Algeria fight for a place in the knockout stages when Group C reaches its climax this evening, 18 August.

Uganda lead the group with 6 points, followed by Algeria and South Africa who are tied on 5 points each. By the end of tonight’s fixtures, only two of the three will advance, while the other faces elimination.

Bafana Bafana face a tough test against the host nation Uganda at the Mandela National Stadium, while Algeria will battle Niger at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, Kenya. Both matches kick off at 19h00 SA time.

Coach Molefi Ntseki admitted that his side have no choice but to go all out for victory if they are to keep their hopes alive. “We are fully aware that if we are to go to the next stage of this tournament, it is a must-win game for us as much as it is for Uganda,” Ntseki said.

Defender Kwandakwensizwa Mngonyama echoed the coach’s words, stressing that the players need to be mentally strong in front of what is expected to be a huge Ugandan crowd. “It won’t be easy, but we are ready and we have to fight. Winning is the only way for us to go through,” he said.

With the group delicately balanced, South Africa’s destiny now rests on their ability to overcome the pressure and silence the home supporters in Kampala.

South Africa coach Molefi Ntseki says he is proud of his players despite Bafana Bafana being held to a goalless draw by Niger in their CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) Group C clash at the Mandela National Stadium on Friday night.

The encounter ended without goals, but it was filled with drama. South Africa had two penalty calls overturned by VAR, while referee Bouchra Karboubi showed Ntseki’s men four yellow cards – something that left the coach visibly frustrated.

Even so, Ntseki praised his players for their effort, saying they gave everything against a Niger side with nothing to lose.
“I think that South Africa did their best in trying to win this game. But it was not meant to be, and we move forward,” Ntseki said.

Ugandan fans rallied behind Niger in the stands, and when the referee blew for full time, they celebrated as their team stayed top of Group C with six points. Algeria and South Africa both sit on five points, with everything still to play for.

The group will be decided on Monday, 18 August 2025, when Bafana Bafana face hosts Uganda, while Algeria take on Niger in the final round of matches.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to meet South African National Defence Force (SANDF) chief, General Rudzani Maphwanya, after his “ill-advised” trip to Tehran, where he reportedly called for stronger political and military ties with Iran.

Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said in a press briefing that Ramaphosa had no prior knowledge of the visit, stressing that such travel authorisations “start and end with the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans.”

Magwenya warned that the trip came at a highly sensitive time, as South Africa was engaged in “a delicate exercise” of resetting diplomatic relations with the United States and securing a mutually beneficial trade arrangement.

“It is not helpful when senior government or military officials make statements that could inflame the situation,” Magwenya said.

“At a period of heightened geopolitical tensions and conflict in the Middle East, the general should have been far more circumspect, particularly on matters of foreign policy, which fall solely under the President and the Department of International Relations.”

Defence and Military Veterans Minister Angie Motshekga has distanced her department from Maphwanya’s remarks and is expected to address the matter with him on his return.
