SAPS and SARS officials went beyond the call of duty and assisted a woman who was in labour at the Lebombo Port of Entry on 30 December 2025. Their selfless actions ensured the safe arrival of a newborn boy, affectionately referred to as “Baby SAPS and Customs.”

Both the mother and the baby are in good health. They were later transported by ambulance to Tonga Hospital for further medical care.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the officials for their exceptional conduct. He stated that policing is not only about combating crime, but also about serving communities with care, compassion, and humanity when the need arises. He further applauded the officials for their outstanding commitment and dedication.

Hawks arrest eight department of labour officials in Limpopo UIF fraud case

The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation units in Phalaborwa and Musina have arrested eight Department of Labour employees and implicated a private company in an alleged Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) fraud scheme in Limpopo.

The arrests follow an investigation into fraudulent activities at the department’s Tzaneen-based office, where officials allegedly colluded with a company between January and May 2025 to submit false UIF claims on behalf of beneficiaries in exchange for gratification. The scheme is believed to have cost the Department of Labour more than R825,000.

The eight suspects appeared before the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 17 December 2025, facing charges of fraud, corruption, theft and money laundering. They were granted bail ranging from R2,500 to R20,000, and the case was postponed to 20 February 2026.

The arrests form part of broader efforts by law enforcement agencies to clamp down on UIF-related corruption, amid ongoing national investigations into large-scale fraud syndicates that have siphoned millions from the fund. Hawks officials have indicated that further arrests may follow as investigations continue.
