: Oscar the sulphur crested cockatoo

📍Klapmuts, Western Cape

How old are we?
+23 years old but I act like a 5 year old

Our noise level?
Quite loud but once I'm calm and can see you, I'm very quiet and inquisitive.

Our most annoying vocalisation? I have a mighty pair of lungs! I won't hesitate to scream to wake you up or whenever you leave the room to make coffee.

My foster is currently trying to help me with my screaming however it will never fully go away so my adopter must be ready for my siren call to lure you back to me.

Our flight ability?
I don't know how to fly and when I did fly, I became panicked.

Can we step up?
I step up only on my terms and have stepped up on my fosters hands a few times as I wanted them to transport me!

Do we bite?
I haven't bitten my foster yet but I do still have the potential to bite if I get overwhelmed

Are we social?
Not really but I do try to say hi to my foster brother Monty!

What type of family do we want? I prefer the company of women, particularly dark haired women. I hate men and I'm basically a 5 year old so this woman must be single!

What kind of cage do we need? A huge cage since I'm quite a big boy, a dome top cage should be alright but anything bigger is better!!

What do we like to eat?
My foster is busy helping me with my change to new diet, but I love apples and oranges so far!

Do we pluck? No but I do make the move to try to eat my head crest feathers but I stop once my foster tells me not to.

I'm not yet available for adoption since I have to finish eating healthy and learn that it's okay to be alone for minute!

‼️Oscar is very aggressive towards men and potentially children‼️

Why is it so hard to adopt from us?

We get all sorts of comments regarding our adoption process on a regular basis. People always ask us why we have such a lengthy and tedious adoption process to follow.

The simple answer is that we have to think about the bird and what would be best for them.

We can’t just give a bird to anyone who comes to our rescue. We need to make sure that the potential adopter has a suitable home environment, cage, toys, temperament and can provide for the bird financially (food, vet bills etc.)

Our process consists out of a few steps:

Step 1: Go through our website and see if there is a bird you would be interested in, in your area.

Step 2: Fill out an application form.

Step 3: Wait to get feedback from the team. This may take a while because Cheeky Beaks is an NPO and is fully run by volunteers. Each representative has a job and a family to tend to but makes time to dedicate to their Cheeky Beaks work as often as may allow.

Step 4: A team member will guide you through the rest. Once your application has been reviewed a team member will contact you.. Following a homecheck, you may need to make some changes or be approved straight away.

Step 5: Meet and greets are the final step in the process. After you have met some of the Cheeky Beaks birds, the team will decide whether the bird is best suited to your family and the adoption will be approved.

Step 6: Bring your bird home!

If you would like to speed up the process you can do the following:

- Do tons of research before you apply. The more knowledgeable you are on bird care, the less groundwork you will need to do after applying. We have many informative blog posts on our website and videos on our YouTube channel, and the team are always willing to assist you.

- Make sure you submit everything we ask for in our adoption application form from the start. This limits back and forth conversations as we have all the information we need from the start.

- Set up your cage before you apply is beneficial to you, but not necessary at all. We require images of your prospective bird’s new living quarters before they can officially move in. If you don’t have anything set up, you will need to wait for all your goods to arrive before sending us images for approval.

Our process may seem lengthy and tedious, but this is the protocol we have found to work best for Cheeky Beaks birds as it puts each and every bird’s needs first.
