Most vegetables, especially those that bear fruit (tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, and peppers, for example) need sun, and a lot of it. Ideally, you want a site with at least 8 hours of direct sun per day. In less light, you can still grow some edibles; mainly leafy crops and herbs.

Devil’s Ivy (Epipremnum aureum), also known as Pothos (although that is actually a different plant), is a type of evergreen vine. The leaves are large and sometimes heart-shaped and come in a wide variety of light and dark colours. This species adapts well to a variety of office conditions, from low light levels to brighter ones. This easy-to-care-for plant with heart-shaped, white-splotched leaves makes a lovely addition sitting on a desk, shelf or table. Larger specimens, trained around a pole or cane, look great in big pots on the floor.

Endangered Species Alert! A rare succulents in the Northern Cape poached for illegal overseas market. It's illegal to take endangered species out of the province without a permit. The police’s Springbok Stock Theft and Endangered Species unit say there has been an increase in plant poaching and is a young but growing epidemic. According to the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), there are about 2 500 types of succulents endemic to the area in the Succulent Karoo. SANBI estimates that more than 1.5 million of these dwarf succulents have been removed from the wild over the past three years. Many of these plants have been red-listed. Please help us prevent the extinction of succulents by reporting any poaching activity that you become aware of.

Farmers are pressured under the water restrictions taking their toll in the citrus-rich Gamtoos River Valley, with several commercial farmers having relocated or closed shop over the past 12 months. Department of Water and Sanitation announced that the 128 citrus, cash crop and dairy farmers in the valley, relying on the Kouga Dam, would be permitted to draw just 20% of their usual water allocations from the dam for 23/2022. The dam is currently at 16.6%.

Growers are cashing in on fungi farming! Mushrooms are cheap to cultivate and can be grown on agricultural waste. Fungiculture is long-developed elsewhere in the world, but Africa has been slow on the uptake. Body and hair oils, soap, juice and even a 'mushroom whisky' are being produced by the fruits of this type of cultivation. Fungiculture, or the cultivation of edible mushrooms, is long-developed in the West, while China has become by far the world's largest producer.
